MONROE, Ohio – A six-story statue of Jesus Christ was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, leaving only a blackened steel skeleton and pieces of foam that were scooped up by curious onlookers Tuesday.

The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m. Monday, Monroe police dispatchers said.

The sculpture, about 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained Tuesday.

I suppose the only thing left to do is wait three days, and see if the statue comes back.

Nicely played.

That one made me smile, a bit.

Hello,

Even from the position of a person of faith, that statue was an abomination. Idols and Graven images and all that jazz.

From a purely objective perspective? Next time, guys, put up a lightning rod and use non-flammable material.

Y'all knew Jesus was the first Vampire, right? Drink his blood, killed by a cross and sunlight, rose from the dead, promised you'd live forever if you drank his blood... In my world, the crucifixes all have a smiling, fangy Jesus nailed to 'em!

Nah, Anthony gnabbed this one above, though I would put Chris as a close second, esp the last part. I'm surprised John hasn't had anything to say about it yet actually.

That anti Christian thing is creating a backlash in me. Christians are really pretty inoffensive, socialists, not so much ;) but seriously, I wonder if people like Dobson are just out there to convince Christian sheep to jump off a bridge and take their image with them, Christians need to eb a lot more suspicious of their coked up allies.

Re: this sort of nonsense, I'll say they're also none too bright, they never seem to get the message. It's like passion of the Christ, where the guy who played Jesus was hit by lightning. If looking for a sign, it couldn't be like He might make it obvious or something.

I don't consider them inoffensive whatever, and fully admit to laughing my ass off in the most bitter, cynical sounding fashion you can imagine the instant I heard about this.

Don't feel bad about it, neither, cause as mentioned, they've not been shy about crowing the misfortune of others, have they now ?

"I don't consider them inoffensive whatever"

Hello,

Well, I'm a Christian. Not a good one, to hear other Christians tell of it. My willingness to believe certain things makes me unpopular in certain circles.

1) That a multi-millenial game of 'telephone' coupled with the selfish interests of politicians and governments and organized religious institutions might have corrupted any divine message.

2) My acknowledgement that evolution makes a lot of sense.

3) My belief that people ought not to be hated for being different.

4) That we should be nice to one another whenever possible.

5) That no human being knows who is going to hell, or can difinitively say what God believes in.

6) That a healthy dose of uncertainty about God's plan ought to exist, to be eliminated only if and when God explains it to us.

I consider these truths to be self-evident, and compatible with Christianity. So, I call myself a Christian. Lots of other Christians disagree. But I like to imagine there's more Christians like me out there.

You know, Anthony - that's almost word for word what Roberta, bless her heart, told me when I came off antagonistic towards her since she was Christian, and happened to be a large part of what turned her own denomination against her.

I dunno that such would qualify ya as a Christian or not, being not even remotely qualified to judge, but woulda take decent human being as a consolation prize ?

With me, it's like the police, individually and out of uniform, I regard em as individuals, but once they put on the colors and become the horde, then WHETHER THEY MEAN TO OR NOT, they're part of every bit of foulness it does, and I do hold them responsible for it, you understand ?

So to me Anthony the person is a decent fellow, but Anthony the christian is just fodder for the gunsights....

Good thing I see you as Anthony the person then, isn't it ?
And that's by MY choosing.

-Frem
(This'll of course make more sense in context with our prior conversation about what my beliefs are.)

Hello,

Glad to be safe, and happy to be regarded as a person. I don't have a Christian Uniform, nor even a Fish sticker. Got a 2008 Ron Paul President sticker, though. Bright and shiny as the day I got it, despite the desert sun.

Whoever made those 9/11 era "These Colors Don't Run" stickers should have contracted those Ron Paul boys, because those patriotic stickers both run AND fade. Makes it all ironical.

I've been lucky enough to find a church whose leadership would probably agree with all of these, or at a minimum acknowledge that things are open for debate without getting heated and close-minded about it.

I've recently been thinking about the new testament story in which the Jewish leaders bring a woman caught in the act of adultery to Jesus, asking him what they should do. Eventually, he says, "Let him who has no sin throw the first stone", and they end up all walking away.

I was thinking that if Jesus were here now and people came up to him asking, "Is it a sin to be lesbian" or "Are Muslims going to hell", Jesus would probably just start writing in the sand, and, if pressed, might answer them with something like, "Is the kingdom of God a matter of having "correct" doctrine? Is it not, rather, a matter of loving all, no matter what their beliefs?". Or something like that. I ran it by my pastor and he was actually in agreement...
