DREAMTROVE

I was pleased to read Michael Steele's comments about the war. I generally agree with Steele, and it was confirmation to me that he was a good leader, and trying to steer candidates way from supporting bad policy that they should at this point have no vested interest in.

Yes, the war was of Obamas choosing, it is a far more massive conflict in the scope of the mission, the size of the arena, and the sheer number of combatants and cash. Obama opted for a radical west-afghan/west-Pakistan war, which is a pretty clear set up towards an eventual r with Iran, a policy that the neocons pushed for a great deal with Bush, which he never delivered to them. Another saving grace I guess.

Anyway, so this should seem like a breath of fresh air: a major party taking an anti-war stance, perhaps the US taking the lead from the UK again at revisiting the definition of conservative, and pulling back to more traditional conservative values and leaving the neoconservative ones behind.

Now, to read the media, RNC Chairman Michael Steele is the enemy. He has committed a heresy by opposing the war in Afghanistan, a completely pointless conflict against a civilian population, and one all of our top aides deem already a defeat. As Stanley McChrystal put it "were fighting with people who represent zero threat to the united states."

So, does Steele really support the position? I would guess yes, but that alone isn't why. He also wants to reach out to campaign for liberty, because he wants the tea party vote, and he needs something that they can both agree on to help lure them back into the GOP, which is, after all, his job. Its good that he chose opposition to the war, I hope he can meet them on fiscal and process issues as well.

However, if our parading warmongers have their say, he will be demonized and thrown format he house of the war god for daring to suggest that people should not support bad policy.

Here's something else Im not sure I get. There's an awful lot of neocon upset at Steele, calling for his resignation almost from day one, and near as I can tell, he's doing a bang up job. The GOP is making an almost instant comeback from Bush, and in a serious way. If you had asked me I would have guessed no one would elect a new republican to national office for a decade, maybe two as a result of Bush's "legacy." a little appreciation for the chair, and not so much with the lionizing. Still, the opposition to Steele is coming largely from Cheney and chorines, and his support is much wider. Neocons vs tea partiers seems to come out tea partiers every time so far.

I just wonder if peace as a political platform can exist in the age of the wargasm.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

"I just wonder if peace as a political platform can exist in the age of the wargasm."

Hello,

I hope so. If we haven't learned the pointlessness of these conflicts by now, will we ever?

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

"This was a war of Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States has actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in."

That's where Steele borrowed trouble he doesn't need.

It's kinda hard to make the case that the U.S. didn't prosecute the war in Afghanistan when we've been there for nearly a decade now, and it's hard to make the case that this war was Obama's choosing when it was initiated in 2001, under a Republican President and a Republican Congress.

The SURGE in the war, the upscaling of the Afghan Theatre of war, is Obama's choosing. But to say that this is something the U.S. wasn't engaged in or actively prosecuting is just idiotic. We invaded Afghanistan in 2001, before Obama was even in the U.S. Senate, so he didn't even get a choice in whether or not to vote for Bush's war(s). This is as stupid a statement for Steele to make as if he had said that WWII was a war of Truman's choosing, or Vietnam was a war of Nixon's choosing. (Nixon DID sharply escalate and expand the conflict)

There is nothing that Obama has done in Afghanistan or Pakistan that wasn't being done by the previous administration. The only thing new is the numbers. And it's ironic that Republicans who pushed for "the surge" in Iraq are now trying to push back against the surge in Afghanistan.

Frankly, I wish Obama would take Steele at his word, and just announce that we're pulling everything out of Afghanistan tomorrow morning at 9am, and be done with it. But of course, Steele doesn't want that, either; he contradicts himself pretty consistently in that speech.

Mike

Your correct. I think he was trying to find some way to say "Obama started this war. He didn't start it in the sense that there were guys already there, but it was a low scale war like kennedys involvement in Vietnam, and Obama went and upscaled it to a full scale war like some kind of Johnson, and so it's his baby now. "

But the thing is that it's such a minefield when you go against the war, your instantly painted as being against the troops, against the mission, for terrorists, against America, pro Muslim anti Israel, whatever.

His message was clear: he thought republicans running for reelection, that, well, it would be okay, or maybe even a good idea, to oppose the war, and that what they should not do is take ownership of it by supporting the bad policy when they weren't already invested in it. He wanted a divorce from the war. And neocons hated that. They also hate him because he's black. Just a hunch.

PN, you never mention that Charles Harrelson the father of actor Woody Harrelson was one of the so-called tramps arrested. he was latter sentenced to life for killing a Federal Judge. He's in the picture being led with other tramps to the DPD by police with shotguns, it's a famous pic that shouldn't be hard to find.
