Firstoff, the rage and ire isn't directed so much at the concept of sockpuppetry per se, save that it has devolved into more or less outright vandalism, and the original ire was over just how many people who were actually willing to contribute something to discussions were driven off by the deliberate pile-on of what in truth amounted to less than a handful of people with multiple log-ins, as well as put up a fake appearance that certain hateful beliefs had far more support than they in truth did, as a discouragement to calling them out for it.

I generally pay no mind save for the occasional free throw at outright trolling, and sometimes even the idiotic spew comin from em can be wrangled into making a useful point if only by contrast, but as it drones on and multiplies it begins to make discussion pointless - I've seen this on many, many more boards than RWED, some political or religious faction gets the idea that since there is no "friendly" moderator to silence or eject anyone who disagrees with their consensus the only thing left to do is drive them off with harrassment and vitriol, at which point the now-dead board turns into a short cycle of self-congratulation and then goes zombie, as even that faction tires of it and leaves yet another abandoned wasteland where discussion might have taken place...

And sadly, usually that works - it's a testament to just how bloody stubborn us browncoats are that anyone sticks around to try discussing anything at all around here, and the very fact that some tiny few have is the only reason I myself have not headed off for greener pastures, yet despite this I tire of the now-escalating crap which is fully intended to serve the express purpose of eliminating any cogent discussion, cause what's the freakin point, if all you get in return is a fullisade of bitter vitriol instead of a discussion ?

And now, having said that, imma call YOU out.

You don't get to deny a caught and admitted puppet as a seperate person unless we're talking MPD - I don't see any need to chase our tails over it, but is it really honest when some small handful of posters have a fistful of alts which exist soley for the purpose of making it seem hate and intolerance have far more traction than they really do ?

For a lot of folks, it wasn't sockpuppets, but just the folks who answered anything they didn't agree with with massive smarm, insult, and distraction...your "pile on". On the "Liberal" side I'd call out Mike (#1 with a bullet), Chris, SignyM, Rue, and lately Niki2. Kaneman, Riverlove and sometimes Wulf on the "Conservative" side seem to do the same. Rap usually reacts when provoked.

There used to be a chance of actually having a discussion of opposing viewpoints, but now it's pretty much the dozens. Don't see Sarge and Hero much any more, and I've about given up. Too bad.

Actually, the few people who post here regularly in the RWED aren't the only people who read it. PN's threads sometimes get hit counts in the thousands and ten thousands. Some smaller yet topical threads get hit counts in the two or three hundreds despite only having ten to fifteen responses. This thread is an example, we have far more people viewing it than we do posting.

Lurkers probably do know the score, but without them posting, it's impossible to know.

As for sockpuppets, I have no interest in calling them out in public, though I've indulged in speculation in e-mail. Knowing who you're talking to doesn't hurt.

But on the board, I figure they can have their fun; it poses little more than a minor inconvenience to the rest of us, if that. I've never understood the anti-sockpuppet reaction myself. It doesn't really matter if it's one person or many.

Actually HKCav - some small part of that was Tongue in Cheek, hence the tail-chasing comment, bitching about the bitching about the bitching, round and round like Ouroborous, fangs sunk in it's own tail - sometimes my strange sense of humor doesn't come across that well.

And yeah, the JSF thing rooked me, indeed - but we'll not bother discussin that whole mess.

One thing which bothers me a lot is that some of our more rational conservative leaning posters tend to step way clear for fear of being slimed-by-association with the nutter/trolls - I hate that, I really do, I mean at least Finn and Geeze will actually argue a freakin point rather than scream and howl, and I kinda miss Finns immense grasp of history even if we did take radically different lessons from it.

Losing viewpoints on a topic always bothers me, and the idea that folks who might otherwise be willing to participate in discussion being discouraged by some of the purile nastiness and it's recent escalation grinds my gears, you know ?

As for anything else, I might take a free-throw, but to hell if imma ever get into that topic-wrecking tit-for-tat back-and-forth, even if others are somewhat less reluctant to chew on that bait....

But there really are occasions where even someone intentionally trolling will accidently bring up or highlight a valid point (such as the benihana/mcdonalds thing) even though contributing to the discussion was not their intent at all - although the jury is still out with me on Mince, cause he/she might have a bizarre viewpoint, sometimes coming at a thought sideways can give ya a better grip on it, there's a method to that fellows madness, I think.

I can deal with hateful/profane/screwball, so long as there's an honest attempt in there somewhere, no matter how ham-handed, to discuss - it's when prevention of such discussion becomes the point that my hackles get raised.

On the other hand, it is a perfectly valid statement that pointing out someone is a sickpuppy of someone else, brought in to back up either what the real person said or to add to the ugliness and/or attack, does little.

Ignoring is better, and it's what I'm trying to do as much as I can. I find not even reading helps me ignore.

The thread I started was because the argument that I'm responsible for the creation of sickpuppies was so absurd and wonderful I had some fun with it.

But it's true; pointing them out or discussing who might be who doesn't bring back any who left because of the ugliness of either sickpuppies or regular posters. They're gone; I mourn them because it sounds like there were many I'd like to have met and had discussions with. But nothing will bring them back, nor make lurkers out there speak up. It's a sad state of affairs, but it is what it is.

Essentially, NOTHING can be done about the uglies amongst us, and the only valid solution is to ignore them. Point well taken.

Anyhow, of course not every poster is a sock puppet, but some of them are and they make a serious nuisance of themselves. They *are* vandals—they permanently destroy threads and ruin discussions. They are abusive. They use this site to exercise their personal demons, (as in, to take them for a stroll and keep them healthy and strong) no matter the cost to the rest of us. Ignoring them would be ideal, but life is never ideal. And it does NOT make them go away. So sometimes you can’t ignore the people calling out sockpuppets, and sometimes I can’t ignore sock puppets. Funny, huh?

I'm sorry you two are having a tough time, as you're two people I respect. I think it has more to do with feeling and reaction than to any serious disagreement; at least I hope so.

Just FYI: I'm no longer referring to anyone the way you mentioned. I realize that calling out sickpuppies is futile and, tho' I'm sad if people who don't realize everyone here is an individual is tricked into thinking they are, there's nothing worthwhile I can do about it. So I'm working on ignoring, because every response from me triggers another from them, so it's self-defeating at best.

If someone has something to say, I'll respond to it. It does amaze me to read through the threads and see that a group of people here, sickpuppies or otherwise, do absolutely nothing but jump into threads to be as unpleasant as they can manage, but none of us can do anything about that, so not responding (as I see many here doing now) is my best option.

If I had one wish, it would be that you can't register here more than once. Obviously that can be gotten around by using a different IP, but at least that would lessen the number. Now, I see a new "person", I click to see when they joined, and almost invariably it's that day or a few days before and they've posted in nothing but RWED. Kinda says it all, and we've had quite a few of them in the past couple of weeks. I think it's sick, but far sicker is just coming here to amuse oneself by posting nothing but ugliness.

That will always be with us, apparently, so take me out of the conversation; I'm not referring to people except as who they are, and I don't foresee any reason to start a sickpuppy thread. I WILL, however, take a minute to call out any "new" person who fits the above description. Once.

Normally when I reply to any post on RWED, I go back through and read it carefully several times so I don't mistake the poster's meaning. I did not do that with your rant, and that's what I meant. I did actually get through it once, and had no desire to repeat the experience. So I replied to the general impression it gave me, and to the followup posts, rather than specifics of the OP. That's what I meant. I'm sorry if my exaggeration cost you pain.

But to be fair: How carefully did you read my counter rant before you came back with all that anger aimed at me? Did you carefully parse my phrases to make sure you weren't taking offense that wasn't intended? No, of course not. Because it's damned hard to listen for subtle details of meaning when a person is YELLING.

Yes, you gave fair warning in the thread title, but I figured you also set the rules for the thread. Not the best rules, which I think I illustrated a helluva better than I expected to. My reply-rant was not written in an angry passion (the good thing about taking a few days before posting) but as a bit of an experiment. I tried to write something that was fairly innocuous if written in small letters, and let it go in caps to see how it'd fly.

Wowsers. It got you so heated that you can't reply to me without "Jesus God M4P" and "God Damn M4P". Hey - I've come down on your use of the caps, but I haven't cursed at YOU. (And it is especially ironic that you start a post like that, then go on to explain that I'm not being attacked.)

Yes, I did take your OP personally, and even found it hurtful, especially coming from you, because I have been central in the SP hunt lately. I dug out evidence from old threads and posted it, and started a thread about the connection to the crap happening at digg. Your OP, as far as I could figure, was specifically annoyed with threads with lists of SPs. I contributed to these, and so, whether you were aware of it or not, you were indeed addressing me.

Now, to get back to the topic on hand: what I really disagree with is the suggestion that I should not speak up, as loudly as I choose to, against what feels to me like abuse. I really don't like someone deciding for me what is abusive and what isn't, and how I can and cannot respond to it. In your discussion with Frem, you did seem to be making that kind of call.

However, it is just a fact of life that when you start a thread like this, going after specific behaviors in a loud tone, you're going to get some responses which are not rosy-happy-lovey. That is the price of ranting publicly.

Okay, I got nothing more to say about sockpuppets (I appreciate the hug Chris, and Kwicko and Niki, you have my thanks for taking something useful away from my experiment in flame warfare), but I'm gonna make one more stab at communicating with you, M4P.

Right off the top, I would never consider cursing at you. I'm truly sorry, I use these terms "jesus god" and "god damn," if I use them at all, as expressions of my own astonishment and dismay at the degree of misunderstanding here between us. I'm sorry, as an utter atheist when it comes to g_d and his son, I forget that these words hold any kind of sincere charge for others, which is just plain dumb of me--my sincerest apologies for that. My bad. Mea culpa. I was exasperated is all. I wish you only blessings and peace.

I'm down with that. And, you'll notice, I got some of that from others here, but you're the only one I got upset with. And it's not because I'm singling you out. Again, it wasn't because of the less than rosy-happy-lovey tone you took (how could I possibly object to that after the OP?), but because you trashed me without, as you claimed, reading my words. There is no civil reply to someone who trashes you without evidence.

What I want most of all, is to be understood. I don't need you to agree with me, except on the terms of our interaction. I get a little hung up on that from time to time, and find I have the energy to attempt to clear things up, sometimes at the risk of antagonizing the other person. I'm sorry for that.
