Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

A recent hour long BBC interview with Tony Blair. These two parts deal with the Northern Ireland peace deal, Kosovo, 9/11 and the war on terror. I found him suprisingly admirably honest and sympathise-able, although I maintain disagreement with him on a couple of key points.

He makes an interesting point about Iraq, referring to an Iraq survey group report saying that Sadaam retained technical know-how from his WMD programme, and was waiting for his chance, when sanctions would be lifted, to start up the programme again in earnest (even likely a nuclear programme). His argument is that in the end Iraq would remain a problem to the world, and probably a reinvigorated one once sanctions were lifted (the oil money flooding back in). He hypothesises that Iraq might now be a competitor to Iran in terms of extremism.

I still disagree with the war, but I think Tony Blair might have a point here - maybe in an alternate universe the world is by now already kicking itself and rueing its missed opportunities of not dealing with Sadaam properly when it had the chance?

The 4th part of the interview is also interesting, as he talks about the economy and his social positions.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Some analysis addressing Blair's 'Sadaam would have rearmed' theory:

And there's the rub. We look back in history, at what was KNOWN to be occurring, and ask ourselves, how did we sit by and do nothing ?

Well, with what we've seen the past 7+ years, and the opposition for finally trying to do something, there's your answer.

I'm not sure I understand you - are you saying that the 'evil' we've witnessed in Iraq in the past 7 years shows how dangerous and crazy (hell-bent on WMDs) the country would've been if we hadn't invaded?

Make sure you read the BBC article.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I don't need to read the BBC article, though I may , if I have the time. I'm just saying, no matter WHAT we do, there'll be those who attacks us for our actions, our choices, and question our motives.

I had and still have reservations about not only sending troops to Iraq, but the manner in which they were used. But military force isn't a thing you sorta kinda do. It's either on or it's not on. Once we pulled the trigger, then I'm for supporting the effort.
