Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

It's probably too small to have made the national news, but we had a pretty horrific natural-gas pipeline explosion here last week. San Bruno is just South of SF, about 20 miles or so from here. It pretty much wiped out the neighborhood (169 homes) and so far the death toll is 7--but it'll go up, they're still looking for bodies.

This photo was taken by an ABC7 camera crew that was allowed to tour the devastation at ground zero in San Bruno on Friday evening.

Workers and officials look over a crater caused by a massive explosion in a mostly residential neighborhood in San Bruno, Calif., Friday, Sept. 10, 2010. At least 50 people were hurt, with three suffering critical burns in the explosion Thursday evening that left a giant crater and sent flames tearing through the middle-class neighborhood of 1960s-era homes in hills overlooking San Francisco, the bay and the airport.

Fire crews tried to douse the remnants of an enormous blaze and account for the residents of dozens of homes Friday after a gas line ruptured and an explosion ripped through in a neighborhood near San Francisco.

Thursday night's devastating gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno, California, raises a couple of critical questions: exactly how extensive and how safe are the nation's gas lines?

America's natural gas pipeline network consists of roughly 217,000 miles of interstate transmission and 89,000 miles of intrastate transmission, according to a February report from the Congressional Research Service. It also contains approximately 20,000 miles of field and gathering pipelines connecting gas extraction wells to processing plants.

On the whole, according to the report, "releases from pipelines cause few annual fatalities compared to other product transportation modes."

Companies operating natural gas transmission pipelines reported an average of one death per year from 2004 to 2008,the report said.

The Department of Transportation, it noted, reported 63 natural gas transmission pipeline accidents in 2008.

But San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric, the company whose ruptured pipeline led to the San Bruno explosion, was also culpable in at least one other recent deadly incident, documents show.

An explosion and ensuing fire caused by a natural gas leak destroyed a house in December 2008 in Rancho Cordova, California, near Sacramento, according to the National Transportation and Safety Board.

One person died and five other people, including one utility worker and a firefighter, were injured.

PG&E had been notified of the gas leaks at the house where the blast occurred, according to the safety board's accident brief. Crews arrived to address the situation and a foreman had just finished speaking with a resident at the house and was about to investigate further when the explosion happened.

PG&E took responsibility for the blast. Almost a year later, a PG&E spokesman revealed that the company accidentally installed the wrong kind of pipe in 2006 when it fixed a gas leak at Paana's home.

National Transportation and Safety Board documents also showed that in May 2008, the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates utilities, audited PG&E and cited the company for several violations, among them failing to provide "prompt and effective response to a notice of each type of emergency including ... gas detected inside or near a building."

In this most recent incident, several eyewitnesses explained that PG&E allegedly knew about a reported gas leak for a week and did nothing.

San Mateo Assemblyman Jerry Hill, according to reports, "said he was 'outraged' to learn that some residents had complained to PG&E about gas leaks in the neighborhood 'for up to three weeks' before the explosion."

The pipe in question was installed in 1948.

This is the PG&E of "Erin Brockovich" fame, remember.

Coupla things bother me. Interview with one guy said neighbors had called the gas company; they came and told him to stay indoors; he came out later and they were gone; nobody ever came to give him any information; then it went up later.

And for all the talk, not much has been done about our infrastructure. They're happy to say "one death per year from 2004 to 2008", but how long do we wait, when that starts to rise, before anything is done? Our infrastructure is a mess, but nobody seems to care.

But hey, they're the good guys, right? We can trust them!

Oh indeed - gas explosions, frayed and downed lines burning detroit, chunks of concrete fallin out the bridges, what's it gonna take ?

I don't think much of that whole infrastructre bank idea since I know how much corporate looting and dangerous second-rate construction there's gonna be...

But for fucks sake, our infrastructre is at this point down right critical - and yet no, war-war-war, and all that money going into welfare for the military-industrial-corporate combine, and for what ?

How many Katrinas, how many Detroit fires, massive blackouts, explosions is it going to take before anyone in washington gets it ?

They MIGHT do well to remember Marie Antoinettes fate, when he failure to look beyond the walls of her palace reached its inevitable conclusion.

That said, I do give Dingbat credit (John Dingell) as he DOES know how critical this is and is workin on it, not that he's gotten much but sweat and regret for his efforts so far.

Infrastructure is one of them things I don't mind my tax dime payin for, cause we NEED that shit, need it a hell of a more than billion dollar boondoggles which amount to slush funds for defense contractors!

No, Niki - not too small at all - it's been ALL OVER the news - local, national, hell, Maddow even broke into her show to announce it the evening it happened.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

The ultimate irony is this- All these politicians angling for Bridges to Nowhere, Military construction contracts, and overpasses for gophers...

If they would just focus on actual, necessary infrastructure, they'd have all the excuses they needed to bring more jobs and money into their states, counties, and cities.

No need to invent fanciful projects or push unneeded military equipment. The needs are real and they are everywhere.

But they don't MAKE MONEY for the politicians who would rather have pork, Anthony...

I don't always watch TV in the evening, Mike, glad to hear it got some play--and I'll betcha she had a few things to say about infrastructure?

Yep, been all over the news. I first heard about it from a friend in Scotland when I was telling him about the wildfire we're having here. As of yesterday, we have two wildfires. Two wildfires, two federal firefighting grants, and no real rain for more than a month. It's a happy time for the semi-arid states.

Well, the downside there, as politicians see it, is that in order to replace gas pipelines, sewers, or water mains, they'd have to (a) inconvenience people by having streets closed and services turned off, and (b) they'd have to listen to their opponents make hay about how they inconvenienced people, stopped traffic, hindered progress, etc. Sadly, infrastructure ain't sexy. And nobody wants to even think about it - until their toilet backs up or their gas main explodes, that is.

True, but also, infrastructure buys few votes; fancy projects which bring much money in and are highly visible (and don't inconvenience people!) are BIG and they get kickbacks, freebies and support from those who wanted the pork.

Rose, where are you? You mentioned "arid states", which sounds like the West, but I haven't watched the news the last four days or so, and have missed mention of wildfires (which I also, admittedly, pay little attention to, given we have so many in California).

Yep, you found it. There's one fire near Boulder, and one a little closer to home just outside Loveland. I thankfully have heard no call to evacuate here and the winds have died down, but these are the worst fires we've had in several years. I know California tends to have a real problem with these things; my aunt lives in San Diego and has to evacuate her home what seems like annually. A system really needs to be put in place for clearing away dry debris, I think. I'm sure such a system could be costly, but dude, fire.

I'm on the fence about it. We've built so much in places we shouldn't have, I'm kinda on the side of nature (except that a lot of those fires are STARTED by humans...).

Nature naturally clears brush on her own, so a certain number of fires would happen no matter what. WE don't do as good a job of clearing, even tho' we use less drastic means to do so.

My sympathy goes out to all who are affected by these things, with the caveat that if we didn't keep developing...

Has anyone seen the developments around Mt. St. Helens since she blew?
