Whoa...holy cow! Every once in a while someone in the world comes along and reminds us what a true hero really looks like. A 35 year-old Gurkha soldier named Bishnu Shrestha was riding a train when he suddenly found himself in the middle of a massive robbery. 40 men armed with knives, swords and guns stormed the train and began robbing the passengers.

Bishnu kept his peace while the gang snatched cell phones, jewelry and cash from other riders. But then, the thugs grabbed the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him and forcefully stripped her naked. Before the bandits could rape the poor girl in front of her helpless parents, Bishnu decided he had enough.

“The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´,” Shrestha recalled. “I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister.”

Here's the part of the story that makes you cheer. He pulls out a kukri (i.e. a knife) and proceeds to kill 3 of them, injure 8 of them, and causes the rest to flee. During the battle, he suffered a severe knife injury to his left hand, from which he's now recovered.

For those who don't know...this is a kukri. Maybe it's okay to bring a knife to a gunfight, after all.

Honestly, the article isn't revealing the whole story because clearly he was also armed with 2 GIANT F***ING BALLS OF STEEL which he clobbered the bandits with.

Sometimes it only takes one.

While completely hypocritical of me to say so, the most likely result would have been his own swift demise, and he knew it too - nothin in the world is more dangerous than someone who has already ceased to care about their own life, cause one can imagine that he didn't expect to pull it off, he just couldn't go home and look at himself in the mirror if he didn't do SOMETHING...

And I can understand that, completely.

Of course, had it been me I woulda whipped the passengers into a frenzy and tossed/kicked weapons to them while encouraging them to stand and deliver, being kinda good at inciting a crowd, yanno.

You ever need to make a first strike against a numerically superior gang, and have a slight surprise edge to do it - use a fire extinguisher.

Hello,

Everything I've ever read about the Gurkhas indicates that they are forty-two and a half times the man that I am.

Thank goodness the girl knew how to throw the psychological switch to activate the terminator.

I'm glad he acted, I'm unfamiliar with this particular group of soldiers, maybe I need to go learn more.

Well, I wouldn't take the site literally, but BotW has a pretty good writeup on this.

The Indian Government also awarded him the bounty that was on the heads of this vicious gang, and granted him discounted airfare and train tickets for the rest of his life. I guess after hearing this guy's insane story they just decided to say, "fuck those backscatter ultra-invasive x-ray machines, the best anti-terror homeland security measure our country can take is to make sure this guy is on as many flights and trains as possible."

LMAO - He's not the only one to make "the list", either...

Seriously though, Gurkhas *are* pretty badass, I sure as hell wouldn't wanna fight one, but you'd kinda be surprised to know they're really easygoing and laid back, almost slackerish, outside of a brawl, prolly cause they got nothin to prove, that they are Gurkha says it all for em.

Also, Kukri are pretty damn useful, I got one somewhere in the closet, a really overized version called a Ganga Ram (which, I find, is also the name of a pretty respectable historical dude) which I used way back in a fairly destructive sense, those things are damn tough.

This Gurkha was laid back too. He probably wouldn't have done anything had they not tried to rape the girl sitting right in front of him. Cell phones and money are probably not worth killing for.

I have noticed this about Vietnam vets I've worked with too. And others with lethal combat experience. They are notably gentle and easygoing. I don't think it is about self-confidence or having nothing to prove. It is about perspective, nothing that isn't worth killing for is worth getting riled up about.

One of them told me that after combat, there is no such thing as a fist fight. There is only one mode of aggression, the kill mode, and you pull that out only if absolutely necessary.

Old folklore says that one time a Gurkha just in from combat was laying on an infirmary bed dying, and an officer came in, told him very sternly not to die.

So he got better.

Alas that it takes combat to bring that awareness home to some people...

I've never seen it as anything less - someone initiates violence against me, the potential for lethality is there, intentional or not.

But try explaining that one to a second grade teacher after someone took a swing at you and you beat them senseless with a chair.

That teacher needs combat therapy.
