Naked Emperor News - 06/13/2011

‘Although the disaster may have caused some minor damage it is reasonable to expect you or your landlord to make these repairs. At this time you are not eligible for FEMA housing assistance.’

Mr Stewart told the website: ‘Lisa and I looked at the letter and laughed.’
While he has since found out his insurance coverage will replace his house, the family is not alone.

Lashunta Tabb’s home 15 miles away in North Smithfield Manor was stripped of its siding, and more than half of her roof blew off with tornado-force winds.

She too, received a letter claiming there was ‘insufficient damage’ – the number one reason in Alabama the people are determined ineligible for FEMA grants, worth up to $30,200.

They're just jealous. We've got a fairly distinctive way of speaking, a culture of ingenuity and hospitality as well as a rich musical tradition.

Glad the family will be alright and I don't think Obama hates southerners any more than Bush hates black people.

I'm a Southerner. I have friends from up North, and I don't think they hate me. In fact, I have friends in the Midwest, and even from California. I don't think they hate me either.

I don't want to get into the old argument of the arrogant Northerner vs the simple Southerner.

Just wanted to point out that your statement was false.

Not getting the point, are ya ? They HAVE NO HOUSE, and the Gub'ment's reply to them is ? 'Meh, there's not enough damage to warrant any assistance. Pound sand '

There's your hopey-changey.

They have NO HOUSE, which their insurance is going to replace. Says that right there. Good free market capitalism and prudence, and self reliance.
Now, admittedly, that's gonna take some time, so they do need temporary housing. Their local, state's rights governments can't help with that? "The Gub'mint" has multiple levels. City, county, state can't help them? Local churches can't help them, as free local faith-based charity, and helping their brothers? Sounds like a Bushie compassionate conservatism program that doesn't work in reality, so now they want to fall back on a liberal Nanny-state program that they didn't support when it involved other folks. "Don't bother to do unto others, when they're hurting, but expect them to do unto You, when you've got a problem." Isn't that what Jesus said? Or, Maybe not...

Anyone know these folks personally? Lots of assumptions goin' about them and their position.

As to local assistance, could be they were devastated as well or just plain not equipped for this kind of situation. Maybe they are getting some faith-based charity assistance, or maybe the neighbors are all banding together, not a whole lot of info here but it doesn't stop folks from jumping to conclusions.

I am disgusted (but not surprised) to find raptor exploiting this to attack Obama and others seeming to believe southerners should be hated and deserved it. Even if you believed some southerner's take on the gubmit was 'wrong,' wouldn't you win more hearts and minds with a 'this is how we can make this better' as opposed to a 'this is bad because you suck' message?

Of course, that assumes you all give a damn what these people think. You'd probably rather talk at them then with them.

You said you don't THINK they hate you. That's hardly conclusive proof that I'm wrong. Heck, maybe they just feel sorry for you, and are pretending not to hate you. How would you know for sure, being a simple Southerner and all?

Yeah, it sucks they lost their house. It would be awesome if they got some help, which it sounds like they are. And if the federal government DOES help them out, Rappy will still be right here, whining that that's not what government should do.

Well, in the same way that you think most people, who put up with you, are your friends. As an arrogant Northerner, how do you really know if people actually like or care about you? Or, are they just smiling and nodding at the things you say because they have too much breeding to argue?

I'm guessing you're not burdened with an overabundance of education. Otherwise, how else would you describe your position in placing Texas in the North?

I'm a Texan. My people aren't known for having too much breeding to argue. It's one of the things that most everybody hates us for, while they're hating the rest of the South.

Do I think that most people who put up with me are my friends? Hardly. I'm of an age now where I realize that you're very lucky if you have three true friends in this world. I'm blessed enough to know exactly who in my life those three are.

I believe that Texas fought on the Southern side, if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe I mistook your attitude for those of a Northern, arrogant, liberal type.

Sorry, never meant to say a Texan was of the blue-belly variety. Thats just too much of an insult.

Oh, I'm a Texan, but still a liberal. Just a liberal with lots of guns. Texas libruls are a strange breed.

I have several ancestors who fought on the Union side in the Civil War. Apparently they weren't fond of people being able to own other people. I still have the old Springfield rifle my great-great-great-grandfather used in the war. Actually, my brother has it, him being named after said old granddad and all, and having a son he can pass it along to.

Wow, Mike, you'll snark at anyone in the same absurd fashion you do Raptor and Wulf, eh?
Quote:

It's not just Obama; EVERYBODY hates Southerners
I call that a rude generalization that any Southerner would have eery right to find repulsive. People are PEOPLE--yes, I too believe there are more racists and idiots in the South, but I KNOW that's a prejudice and wouldn't even think it generalizes to all. Shees...that makes you no better than Wulf and his "hippies are to blame for everything".

Obviously Raptor used this story to do his usual slamming of Obama despite the fact that it has nothing to DO with Obama...what about all the lovely “help” people got during Katrina? Like toxic trailers to live in. Happy’s right, it’s the same as “Bush hates Black people” and just as stupid. It’s about the government in toto, not the Prez, who has nothing to do with it. None of which needs saying, but how this became a North-South fight is ridiculous.
Quote:

We've got a fairly distinctive way of speaking, a culture of ingenuity and hospitality as well as a rich musical tradition.
Unquestionably, Happy. Unfortunately, you have people there who “treasure” more than those things, and who wear their racism like a badge...a lot of which is UNCONSCIOUS racism. We’ve seen enough of that in the past year or so, and people find it offensive. Every time I hear “War of Northern Aggression” it makes my skin crawl, AND it makes me immediately alienated from whoever says it.

Do let’s not get into the Civil War, please, we’ve been around and around on THAT one as to who’s to blame. I’m just saying that there is a certain among of mockery and dislike by some in the North of the attitudes represented---usually by PEOPLE IN POWER in the South. So yeah, there’s a certain amount of truth to what Mike says, but in my opinion it’s only those with no common sense who hates “Southerners” per se.

Mike,
Quote:

No, no; he’ll be right there complaining that the government didn’t DO ENOUGH, or did it wrong, or somesuch. Remember the Gulf Spill?

All in all I think it's funny that this so quickly turned into an argument that has NOTHING to do with why Raptor put it up or what he was trying to say. As in: Your intention failed, Raptor, as it should have. It's truly stupid to use this as an excuse to claim Obama dislikes Southerners...almost laughable, but too predictable, so it's just boring and a waste. Luckily people are finding other things to discuss.

I've read a book called "Plain Folk Caught in a Rich Man's War" and it changed the way I viewed the 'civil war/ war of northern aggression.' The book shows what the war was really like from those hurt the most, the poor southern families. The rich planters were hoarding supplies, stealing land from the poor (while the man of the house was ordered to war and unable to defend his family) and making a killing up until they lost it all in the end. The rich planters were a devious and manipulative bunch, and they're still around today with different titles, and not exactly unique to the south (in case that wasn't obvious).

Racism was a tool of the upper class to control the lower class. The notion that a poor white was better than an Irishmen was better than a Negro kept them from getting wise and working together against their common enemy, the upper crusties oppressing them and planting that seed.

North was motivated by economics. They had the industry and wanted more control over the South's resources, 'specially concerning how much they would pay for them.

Yup, that's what we've been all through now and again, in a nutshell. It comes up occasionally and we get RE-educated on what you wrote, and more. It's certainly not as simple as our history books when I was young taught us, nor is it as simple as many (probably most) people on EITHER side think it was. The more we're exposed to the intricacies the better, so we can learn what we WEREN'T taught. It just too often starts a fight here, so I try not to partake.

Just for a giggle: Guess which side Frem is on...

Would depend on what he knows I 'spect. There is no 'good' side, both were exploiting folk, but I would guess he'd be 'against' the union on account of them winning and publishing more lies. Had the confederacy won, and published more lies, I would suspect he would be more against them.
