Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I periodically receive propaganda messages in my email box. I believe this is a biproduct of having registered with both GOP and Democratic political websites during the last election cycle so that I could keep abreast of information campaigns as they were planned and executed by the gremlins on both sides of the aisle.

Also, I sometimes receive forwarded mail from family members who send me things they have received from their friends.

Today's Propaganda (like most I receive) involves Obama.

***********************
This is the problem we are dealing with.

Forward this as received, and without comment.

Yes, he told us in advance what he planned to do. Few were listening.

The following is a narrative taken from a 2008 Sunday morning televised "Meet The Press."

>From Sunday's 07 Sept. 2008, 11:48:04 EST, Televised "Meet the Press" THE THEN Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag.

General Bill Ginn, USAF (ret.), asked Obama to explain WHY he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

The General stated to Obama that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...

During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand at attention, facing the flag, with the right hand over the heart. Or, at the very least, "Stand and Face It".

NOW GET THIS !!
'Senator' Obama replied:
"As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides....." "There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression...." "The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air, and all that sort of thing."

(ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???)
Obama continued:, "The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National Anthem as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails - - - perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments ....."

**************************

If the content is surprising, it is of course because it is false. However, the most offensive part of the message was this:

FORWARD THIS AS RECEIVED, AND WITHOUT COMMENT.

Aka

Forward this as received, and without comment.
Be an unpaid, uncritical cog of a propaganda campaign.
Do not check the veracity of the text before passing it on.
Help us to spread our lies.

With Thanks,

Hello,

I wanted to add that before Bush left office, I saw quite a bit of anti-Bush emails from the other side. They were just as often filled with outright lies.

This perplexes me, because there are always enough legitimate reasons to find fault with our leaders. You could fill volumes with their missteps. Yet facts are fabricated at will, and passed on by uncritical recipients who spread it around the world.

Occasionally, when I see things like this, I get the grim feeling that we may deserve what is happening to us. It makes me both mad and sad. "Oh, this says something bad about the guy I don't like? Must be true! Let me send this to all of my friends!"

I mean, really... do we deserve better?

I don't know why they invent emails like that. I guess the same reason they are always asking you to transfer money to the former president of Nigeria. Or buy really cheap Viagra from them.

To be honest, I don't know who reads those things.

But to answer your question, yeah, we deserve better. Yes, we're dumb and stupid and gullible and petty. But we CAN be better if only we were raised to be.

More to the point, our kids deserve better. We fight for their futures.

I agree with Obama about a lot of that, and am not surprised it's anathema to today's conservatives. I've always hated our national anthem, all about war and bullshit. I'd love it if they'd change it to "America the Beautiful" (at lesat not warlike) "My Country 'Tis of Thee" (whatever it's actual name) is sung to the tune of "God Bless the Queen", so that wouldn't be appropriate, but I like the picture painted by America the Beautiful.

Luckily I never signed up with either party, so I don't get shit like that. I HATE bulk mail, and have a tendency to fill the return envelope with sand and all the crap that was initially in it, send it back without postage or return address, and a note saying "Don't EVER send me this shit again!" Works great, except that there is always more in the mail box the next day...

I think Anthony's point is that none of it is true. Some of it was taken from a satirical paper (like the Onion), attributed to Obama as a joke.

Oops. Now I see...I only read as far as the first paragraph of Obama's response...yes, "I'd like to teach the world..." kinda gives it away, as does the entire second paragraph. I still agree with the first one, tho'. Which of course makes me a traitor, I suppose.

"Which of course makes me a traitor, I suppose."

Hello,

Obviously. Anyone with any divergent opinions is always a traitor. ;-)

I like our national anthem, its more fun to sing than America the Beautiful because its musically more complex, has a wider range and its just fun and, lets face it, war is a reality and the song is based on a historical event, I like it and think we should keep it.
