I assume several have heard (and those of us on the West Coast have experienced!) the high winds lately. The good old Santa Anas are blowing through, but with a vehemence notable even for THEM!

Several overturned semis on a Utah highway. Hundreds of thousands without power in California. A wind gust reaching 123-mph in Colorado.

The powerful winds that tore across Western states Thursday created a path destruction that closed schools, left neighborhoods with a snarl of downed trees and power lines, and prompted some communities to declare emergencies.

The storms, described as a once-in-a-decade event, were the result of a dramatic difference in pressure between a strong, high-pressure system and a cold, low-pressure system, meteorologists said. This funnels strong winds down mountain canyons and slopes.

The system brought high wind warnings and advisories for California, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona and New Mexico. The blustery weather is expected to eventually hit Oklahoma, Missouri and Indiana.

The violent winds eased but strong gusts still blew through the region Thursday night, at times reaching 60 mph in some California mountains. Forecasters said the winds would continue to diminish through Friday. Several overturned semis on a Utah highway. Hundreds of thousands without power in California. I got news for their "forecasters". That story's from yesterday. It's still blowing up a storm out there, at 7:15 am Saturday morning, and blew like a mutherfucker last night. I should know, I sleep outdoors! So much for "diminishing" through Friday! But then we know about forecasters...

I don't mind the winds--I wish they didn't do actual harm to anyone, but I LOVE 'em--but it's friggin' HOT, which always comes along with them. We JUST started acclimating to Winter, now for the last few days it's been in the 60s, and our sysems aren't prepared for it. Yuck. I hear Vegas took a major hit.

Anyone got personal experiences of this current stuff? I know it's created havoc all over the West, I'm just curiou. And actually, So. Cal. should be grateful--usually when the Santa Anas blow, there's a fire SOMEWHERE down there and they make it horrendously more difficult to get the fire under control. At least not this time, tho' I'm guessing they aren't helping OUR fires up here! Still and all, we're not as dry as they are.

Just wondering what others are experiencing.

Lucky you. That's where we were a few days ago, before the Santa Anas kicked in, and we had JUST begun acclimating to Winter temps. I want them back!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I live in a valley surrounded by mountains. Weather extremes rarely occur here, unless you include heat during the summer. I wish I could lend you a wind wall.

Yeah, I know it's an expression, but luck has nothing to do w/ it.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

RIONAEIRE THANKS for asking

I lost a few shingles, but otherwise came out OK. I think it was a good thing I had all of my very large trees recently thinned and trimmed, plus I don't overwater them so the roots are sound. But I have a lot of photos of fences down, half-foot trees with their trunks snapped right off, and huge trees - 2 1/2 feet across at the base or larger, lying down across roads and in people's yards. Fortunately in my neighborhood at least, no one's home, garage or car got demolished.

I was talking to a neighbor who lives here now but used to live in Fontana, which is about 30+ miles closer to the desert. He says the winds there are worse, several times a year they are so high they will literally shake homes. And, I had always assumed that if the fragile stuff breaks or the light stuff blows away, at least you are in good shape for the next Santa Ana. What he told me is that the winds break things down bit by bit. The roof, or tree, or fence that WAS in good shape before the storm and survived it, may not be in such good shape after. It was startlingly clear: bit by bit, it breaks things down.

BYTEMITE

My uncle's fence blew down, and one of my cousins lost a tree and are staying at my uncle's because they lost power.

It hasn't been warm here, which is interesting if the Santa Anna winds are supposed to be warm. I suppose it hasn't been particularly cold here, either. 20 and 30 degree weather is pretty normal this time of year.

Our winds also came from the east, not the west, so go figure. It's probably part of the same system, maybe a circular front system of some sort.

Anthony: Technically so's Salt Lake City. The thing about the winds we got is that they swept up over the mountains and had a "crash" zone about a mile off from the foothills. I was fine, we're in the shadow of the Wasatch.
