On Thursday, the Justice Department demanded Florida Governor Rick Scott end his extensive purge of registered voters from the rolls because it was in violation of federal law. Scott still hasn’t formally responded but his county election supervisors have already taken action.

The Palm Beach Post reports:

Florida elections supervisors said Friday they will discontinue a state-directed effort to remove names from county voter rolls because they believe the state data is flawed and because the U.S. Department of Justice has said the process violates federal voting laws...
The Justice Department letter and mistakes that the 67 county elections supervisors have found in the state list make the scrub undoable, said Martin County Elections Supervisor Vicki Davis, president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections.

Ron Labasky, the association’s general counsel, sent a memo to the 67 supervisors Friday telling them to stop processing the list.

“I recommend that Supervisors of Elections cease any further action until the issues raised by the Department of Justice are resolved between the parties or by a Court,” Labasky wrote.

Previously, the State of Florida indicated they intended to accelerate the purge. Florida has until June 6 to respond to the Justice Department.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

YAY!!!

Just goes to show PEOPLE can do the right thing, despite those in power wanting to force them to do the wrong thing. I'm proud of them; wouldn't it be nice if those who can in positions EVERYWHERE stood up against this bullshit! THANX Mike, I hadn't see this yet, and it goes a teeeny ways toward restoring my faith in...something...

NOT JUST THAT, but catch this about five of the county elections supervisors:

Sarasota County: Joyce Soltis, administrative assistant to Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent (R) .....

Volusia County: Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall (R) .....

Hillsborough County: The Tampa Tribune reported today that Supervisors or Elections Earl Lennard (R)

Pasco County: Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley (R) .....

Marin County: Because it has proven to be anything but “rock-solid” data, Supervisor of Elections Vicki Davis (R), president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections .....

All REPUBLICANS! Good for THEM!

Oh, and one Democrat: Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher (D) ....

Of course, I imagine there are few Democrats in that office, and I hope all, Dems and Repubs, refuse to continue.

We'll see where it goes from here.

Sounds like they're all piling on after the Feds stepped up. Are they gonna re-instate anybody they've already bumped off?

I wonder. Reports are that around 20% of those on the purge lists ARE legally eligible to vote, and would be removed from voter rolls if they didn't put up a fight to keep their voting rights intact.

So is voter fraud such a "massive" problem that it's worth it to disenfranchise 20% of any group of legally eligible citizens?

According to sources, there were over 180,000 names on the purge lists, and the 20% figure would mean more than 35,000 citizens with every right to vote would be barred from voting this year unless they were willing to jump through legal hoops to retain their rights.

Regardless of the intent behind Florida's new disenfranchisement law, one need only look at the results to see how bad an idea it is and to understand why the DOJ has stepped in.
