Fahrenheit 451, a masterpiece about censorship written on a rented typewriter. We shall miss these authors of classics as they pass on. I remember a similar sadness when Asimov left. How many are still here from the golden age of sci-fi?

That's sad. Ray Bradbury may have renounced some of the more important themes and implications of Fahrenheit 451 but he still had some major literary impact.

^ This. I'm glad that some of the publishing houses are re-publishing the older writers. And without a doubt, the golden age of sci fi print was the Campbell authors. Almost all of whom you named wrote for Campbell at one time or another.

In late 1937, Science Fiction rounded a corner. Joseph W. Campbell assumed the editorship
of Astounding Stories and, hitting his stride in 1938, ushered in the official Golden Age
of Science Fiction. Many of the 'big' SF names published their first stories in 1938 and
1939: Lester del Rey (Astounding 4/38), Isaac Asimov (Amazing 3/39), Robert A. Heinlein
(Astounding 8/39), A. E. van Vogt (Astounding 7/39), Theodore Sturgeon (Astounding 9/39).
And L. Ron Hubbard, previously an adventure pulp magazine contributor, made his first SF
sale to Astounding in July 1938. The authors were there and the fiction soon followed.
Heinlein's Future History, Asimov's Foundation Trilogy (yes, until the early 80s, it was
just a trilogy) . . .

Aldiss, Ballard, Leiber, Niven, Vance, etc. . . It was a bunch of Amazing Minds.

I should put this in Signym's Most Influential Books thread.
Because as a child and a young adult, I pretty much misunderstood everything that counted
or could help me through Real Life.
But Astounding Stories/Astounding Science Fiction, and the authors there, taught me plenty
of good theory & principle while keeping me entertained.

I second that. He had such a big influence on me and was so amazing. I can't believe he's gone.
