Typos Happen to Obama Too

By Krystal Bonner

| Mitt Romney’s campaign has gotten more flack today for spelling issues. The campaign’s latest flub—misspelling GOP demigod Ronald Reagan’s last name as “Regan” in a slideshow for donors—is possibly the most embarrassing yet.

Just last week, Mitt Romney’s official iPhone app misspelled “America” as “Amercia,” then a video posted on Romney's Facebook page misspelled “sneak-peek” as "sneak-peak.” On Monday, another Facebook error was spotted, a link that said supporters could buy “offical” campaign gear.

But President Obama and his staff are not infallible spellers, either. The @whitehouse twitter feed misspelled “Libya” as “Lybia” in February 2011, an error not widely reported by the media. And in 2010, President Obama misspelled “Syracuse” as “Sycacuse” while filling out his NCAA Tournament bracket on ESPN (see 2:50 mark), another incident not widely reported in the media.

Also, in his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama misspelled rebel slave Denmark Vesey’s last name as "Vescey” and misspelled anti-colonist Frantz Fanon’s first name as “Franz”.

While the Romney camp’s latest blunders are fun to poke fun at because of the central importance of Reagan and America to Republicans everywhere, at most they show the campaign is run by fallible humans like everyone else. In fact, they might reveal more about the lack of coverage of similar mistakes by Obama and his staff.

This.

Do you really think this is evidence of partisan favoritism in the media? You don't think if Obama mispelled "America" the media would be all over it? Just look at the flack the guy caught last time around for not wearing a gorram flag pin!

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

It might also have something to do with the fact that Romney's camp has made multiple errors in a very short space of time, and he's running for President. All the misspellings are in one way or another related to the campaign, n'est-ce pas?

Obama's, on the other hand, let's see...1995 (?), 2010, 2011, and none having to do with him saying "Look at me, I'm smart enough to be President!" or asking for donations, or ANYTHING having to do with all the stuff in the media today. A Twitter feed, an NCAA tournament bracket, and a book...none of which had the media's attention like a Presidential campaign. I think that's a more reasonable explanation for them not getting press than any other.

FYI, Romney's name is misspelled in the thread title.

Or maybe it's not. He might have changed the way he spells his name; he's flip-flopped and changed positions on so many things it's hard to keep track!

Caught that one myself, right after I posted it, but I don't know how to fix it.. AND I'm usually real careful about spelling. I wondered if anybody would notice.

I think it mighta been a Freudian slip-- just think about how it'd be pronounced if ya spelled it that way: Rom- Meaney. :<)

Oh, I'm just having some fun, NOBC.

But to edit the title, go up to your original post, click "Edit", and you should be able to change the title. I did it earlier on one of my threads, at Rappy's suggestion, to make the title both more accurate and more informative.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I'm with Niki on this. Obama's typos were few and far between, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, and out of any campaign spotlight.

Has anyone noticed that accidental and 'accidental' typos substituting Osama for Obama have dropped to near zero in the last couple of years? Do you think it's too obvious and tired to be resurrected, or will it show up again as the election cycle grinds forward?

Oh, and while I can understand peak v peek, I don't get 'Amercia'. Where is the quick and dirty spell-check?

I'm just having fun, too, of course. That's what the little old smiley :<) was for. Certainly I don't regard a couple of typos, one in a tweet, fer Gawd's sake, as equivalent to misspelling America and Reagan in major campaign stuff. I wanted to throw it up before the righties here did, see how many of 'em would jump on it.
Thanks for the tip on editing- it works the same as editing the body of the message. I've just never tried it on the header. I think I'ma leave it as it is-- speaks more truth about me than correcting it would.

Well, jumping on it first seems to have worked. Aside from Whatzit, who is easily ignored and never makes any sense anyway, seems the righties are avoiding this one. If you hadn't, anyone wanna bet we'd have gotten something like "Lame-Stream Media Ignores Obama Stupidity, Attacks Romney Honest Mistakes!" or somesuch. Tho' I think you came pretty close...and of course we could have a (possibly fun) game of guessing what PN's title would have been...

That was, of course, my intent: to get as close to right wing a****** nut-job-ness as possible. If you read my original post carefully, you'll realize that the entire post is a direct quote, that wasn't clear... And you'll realize that that is clearly the original author's attitude.

The article cites 3 misspellings for the Obama camp in 17 years.

I can list you three from Romney's campaign in less than 17 days, including misspelling the name of the country (a clear sign that Romney's a member of some evil cult religion and hates America) and misspelling the name of the patron saint of conservatism, Ronald "Regan". Those are pretty glaring fuck-ups, even for a guy wearing magic underwear from the planet Kolob.

Ah - Obama's gaffes and misspellings are his alone, but Romney's are entirely the fault of his interns, eh?

Does it ever occur to Republicans to hire an intern or nine who can actually spell?

Shit, I thought y'all were supposed to be the ones with all the solutions; how come you never thought of that one?

Is "Fucking learn it man" one of the chapters?

Did they teach you that in charm school?

I thought you valued plain speaking, Jack; that's why I speak to you in a plain language that I hoped you could understand. Are you saying I should be more politically correct with you, so I don't hurt your itty-bitty feewings?

I should hope that I am further left than Obama, since he's to the right of Reagan. Telling me I'm a leftist really isn't an insult to me, Jack. Do you find it insulting when I call you a conservative? If you take it as an insult, it says more about your feelings about yourself than it does my feelings about you.

I'm not sure that last half is as insulting as you'd hoped. I'm the PirateNews for anyone SANE? Gosh, I should hope I reach people who are sane. The insane are somewhat beyond my ken, though; you seem to have a good rapport with them, so I'll leave you to it.

That, and it was mostly names, rather than every-day words. (Yes, I know Reagan is a name.)

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.
