Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died on Monday at her home in San Diego. She was 61.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, her company, Sally Ride Science, announced on its Web site.

My heart goes out to her family and the rest of America. We've lost a great American. Sadly, yet another tragedy in a just a few short days.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Wow.

No one should ever die that young.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Has anyone noticed how many youngish famous people are dying of pancreatic cancer? Supposedly it's pretty rare. It makes me wonder if the overall incidence has gone up recently, or of this is just a statistical fluke.

SignyM: I swear, if we really knew what was being decided about us in our absence, and how hosed the government is prepared to let us be, we would string them up.

My suspicion is that might have to do with HFCS, via the methodology by which the pancreas works and why/how HFCS can screw that up, side order of mercury contamination - seems almost a recipe for it.

It takes a lot of guts to sit on the world's largest conventional bomb, in the most complex vehicle ever assembled, constructed by the lowest bidder and maintained by government workers.

Yeah, that was sarky. It doesn't diminish the admiration I have for her.

Godspeed, Sally Ride.

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Slate.com has 3 stories about her on their Double X page ( Women's issues), about the fact that she was a lesbian, and left behind a female life partner of 29 years. I hadn't heard any mention of that anywhere else, and it is, of course, of no relevance to her work or achievements, as unimportant as the prejudice against gay and lesbian marriage or lifestyle. Her business, her private life, of no concern to any outsider. I mourn for her loss, and for the sorrow of her partner.

The list of 'firsts' in the women dept , as far as astronauts goes, it pretty extensive. I wonder if anyone will claim her as 'first lesbian' in space?
