...for utilizing the very American filibuster which the Republicans have utilized far more than at any other time in history. In their case, they haven't even had the balls to actually stand up and ENDURE one, so in his eyes, does that make them COWARDLY Terrorists?
Quote:

On Monday, the Texas State House voted overwhelmingly to pass SB 5, a proposal that would ban all abortions after 20 weeks, as well as adding stringent new restrictions on how clinics get licensed.

In the State Senate, the bill was met by stiff resistance, both by protestors outside, but more prominently by State Senator Wendy Davis (D-Ft. Worth), who filibustered for thirteen hours to try and stop the bill, successfully shutting the bill down.

Today, State Rep. Bill Zedler (R-Arlington) responded by tweeting the following: “We had terrorist in the Texas State Senate opposing SB 5." Two hours later, hundreds of people called out his comment.

Zedler has already endured national ridicule for a multitude of offenses. Past instances of criminal stupidity include:

•Authoring H.B. 650, better known as the Birther Bill, which would have required all presidential and vice presidential candidates to submit a birth certificate to Texas officials for examination before they could be placed on the statewide ballot.

•Attempting earlier this year to shutter all the LGBT centers on Texas college campuses.

•Convincing the Texas Department of Health and Human Services to begin collecting detailed information on women who undergo an abortion.

Now he can be internationally known again as the man who thinks terrorists are anyone who filibusters or panders to gathered protestors to try and kill a bill they object to (or as they're known in Washington D.C.: Republicans). http://www.examiner.com/article/bill-zedler-calls-wendy-davis-a-terror

Well, you knew it was coming. The terminology the right has become accustomed to using has gotten to the point where virtually ANYTHING they disagree with is terrorist, Nazi, Communist, dictatorial...and any time they don't get their way, out come "civil war", "revolution", "Second-Amendment solution", etc. It seems simple thing like "un-American" got left behind, apparently not strident and threatening enough for them. We'll have to remember that next time Republicans threaten a filibuster

...aaand here comes Rick Perry, and HIS gem of "wisdom" about Davis:
Quote:

Rick Perry: Wendy Davis should know better

Demonstrating the stark ideological divide between abortion supporters and opponents, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) argued Thursday that state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) should have learned more from her own life experience.

"Who are we to say that children born in the worst of circumstances can’t lead successful lives?” Perry asked in a speech at a convention held by the National Right to Life organization. “Even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She’s the daughter of as single woman, she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas Senate. It’s just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example: that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential, and that every life matters.”

Davis started working when she was 14 to help her single mother and siblings; by 19 she was divorced with a daughter of her own. Living in a trailer park and “destined to live the life that I watched my mother live,” as she put it in a 2011 video, Davis was encouraged by a co-worker to go to community college. She worked two jobs and took paralegal classes, transferred to Texas Christian University, and after being the first in her family to get a bachelor’s degree went on to graduate from Harvard Law School with honors. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/06/27/rick-p
erry-wendy-davis-should-know-better/
]

And, of course, it surprises nobody that "Gov. Rick Perry (R) is calling the legislature back into session to deal with the abortion bill." http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/06/26/texas-
special-session-will-deal-with-abortion
/

These people sicken me. Perry spews forth that "Through their duly elected representatives, the citizens of our state have made crystal clear their priorities for our great state. Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn." No, Rick; when your elected representatives don't REPRESENT YOU, the citizens have little recourse, and your and your party's actions regarding people ONCE THEY ARE BORN make it patently obvious where your priorities lie.

Heard about this.

Assuming fuzzy logic is at work regarding terrorist --> someone who kills people --> fetuses are people --> abortion supporters. (Ignored: stances on war or capital punishment)

Or something about how some of the protesters in the gallery were arrested for becoming unruly, and even though it was removed from DOD guidebooks, law enforcement and military types probably still consider protesters to be a form of low-level terrorism. As such unruly protesters --> person they support --> terrorists.

Or maybe it's just pandering to the base. Even though I've also heard Texas is surprisingly pro-choice?

Anyway, I declare these comments to be verbal assault upon my brain matter and they fail basic sniff tests for various categories of argument.

I am also sad that I think I understand how the minds of politicians process what happened. Possibly should recommend self for mental cleansing, preferably violent.

Yes, "it's just pandering to the base". Texas' CITIZENS may be pro-choice, but remember that Texas' GOVERNMENT is in the hands of the right wing. What the citizens want means nothing to those in power if they have the power to give their citizens the finger and do exactly what they want, you already know that.

No mental cleansing required, Byte. As the old saying goes: "It's better to know where the alligator IS than where he ISN'T". And of course "Just because you're paranoid doesn't meant they AREN'T out to get you". Both good things to live by, in an insane world.

Where Alligator Is ---> Alligator

Where Alligator Isn't --> Bliss.

Subnote: can determine location of alligator with second option via process of elimination.

Anyway. To be honest, I actually have mixed feelings about all this. I only know three things about the bill:

1) Tightened medical standards for clinics
2) 20 week limit on abortions
3) No rape exception.

It probably needed to be killed just on account of number three, but 20 weeks seems pretty generous (five months is the lower limit on fetus viability) and I thought there was already universal disapproval of late-term abortion unless there's a medical risk for the mother. And I heard that the first one would close some clinics, but by itself having high medical standards doesn't seem like a bad thing.

I also question the use of the term "hero" as applying to anyone in congress that day except for the members of the public watching in the galley. Davis, it seems to me, was just doing her job. Her feat of talking for 12 hours and ignoring physical discomfort to kill a bill was impressive, but I am not sure it was heroic.

She's definitely not a terrorist though, not any more than the people in the gallery were or the Republicans opposing her were.

Hmm. You know, my brother was a month and a half overdue. They say he weighed ten pounds at one point before birth.

My mom didn't abort any of us, but she was wishing for the sweet embrace of death about then.

Almost happened too. Brain tumours.

Given that he used the singular "terrorist", and she was the only one in the Senate filibustering, which other one person do you think he meant?

Or do you think he's just a fucking idiot like so many right-wingers, and isn't capable of pluralizing words that end in "ist"?

When you close 80% of the clinics in the largest state in the lower 48, *when* doesn't enter into the equation as much as *IF* does.

Of course, you realize that abortion at 5 months isn't the law in Texas, but you're such a fucking disingenuous douchebag that you'll feign ignorance.

Yeah. I mean 20 weeks is probably pushing it, but I CAN think of some extenuating circumstances that might cause such a delay. Like if the girl's family or father of the baby disapproves and/or is abusive or theirs some criminal aspect involved in this, or the girl doesn't have access to a car.

Still, it's kind of a strange upper boundary if you think about it. It's just one of those bills where yeah, I can get why people don't want it, but some of the parts of the bill aren't all terrible. Maybe. Probably Not? Bleh, politics.

I'm sure there's a Planned Parenthood clinic somewhere in Texas that would be happy to abort you Gosnell-style right now. And you're such a fucking disingenuous douchebag they'd probably do it for free.

Wrong on both counts. Planned Parenthood doesn't do abortions 2600 weeks post-birth, and they also don't generally do them for free.

Keep trying, though. You hardly look desperate at all.

Think maybe he was referring to Lt. Governor David Dewhurt's draconian efforts to subvert and do an end-run around the democratic process and the parliamentary procedures? Maybe he meant the President of the Senate was the terrorist?

He might just be right in that case.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"I mean 20 weeks is probably pushing it, but I CAN think of some extenuating circumstances that might cause such a delay."

The very earliest amniocentesis can be performed is at 15 weeks, though most doctors prefer to wait till 18 weeks - there's more fluid available for testing so it's an easier, safer procedure. Then the analysis has to be done in a lab, and if there's significant genetic abnormality, the abortion scheduled. I can easily see the whole timetable extending well past 20 weeks.

I'm curious if that's what you were thinking of.

Kiki, why bother? But thank you for laying it out.

Who threw the first insult is irrelevant; we're each responsible for our own words. But of course you're right, Byte; a lot of threads are impossible quite quickly now. I'm not getting involved, I just wanted to point out that the "20 weeks", explained perfectly by Kiki, is mostly the EXCUSE for the bill; it's the material intended to do away with ALL availability of abortion in the state which is the intent. That's how it's done.

I use irrelevance and humour to try to defuse these situations, but lately I've been routinely getting ignored whenever I attempt to do so.

At this point I'm not even sure it's an issue of who started it. These threads don't happen in a vacuum, people attack others in a thread based on what was said to them in a previous thread. I think to find who started what I'd have to go back YEARS, and it would still be just as murky as to who got so annoyed first that they started attacking, and whether (deliberately?) causing annoyance can be a form of guilt on the part of the other person.

Mostly I just want people to stop verbally beating the hell out of each other around here. As I said, I think it just makes things worse.

And yes, though I called out the 'wish so-and-so was aborted' comments as particular examples, I am aware that it takes two to escalate a situation.

I see that you're starting to see me as an enemy as well, and there's not much I can do about that. I wish you'd tell us what's up though, like if you posted your own thread airing a list of grievances towards other board members, at least people might start to understand.

Mind you, all this sanctity of life bullshit from a state that as I hear, just executed someone this week even though the case they were initially convicted on was crap, and I've never once yet seen any of that supposed sanctity of life rhetoric apply once the kid pops out so we all know it's bullshit - often as not run out the mouths of the very folks cripping access to contraception and proper education on PURPOSE to create this awful situation to use it for power and politics.

You ask me, new rope would be too good for em, yanno ?

Right now we've branched out at CoTL into cleaning up some more damage caused by these fucks - remember me sayin if there's a hell on earth, it is where unadopted children go ?
Well another problem relative to this, is that the few survivors of our nightmare grade Foster Care System "age-out" when they hit eighteen, and since there's no MONEY in it any more, a substantial amount of Foster so-called-parents send em out the door with boot in arse, usually after mistreating them and CERTAINLY without teaching them any of the necessarily skills to survive on their own, not to mention a lot of them kids got deep seated, untreated problems festering....

And who cleans up that mess, hmm ?

Frem's right; if you go into what actually has to happen if a woman feels she cannot bear a child, or if a fetus has an illness which would keep her in poverty the rest of their lives (is Texas one of those states where the doctor doesn't even have to tell her...or is sued if he does?), or if, gawd forbid, she's raped, and all the walls and hurdles they've ALREADY put up in this matter, 20 weeks looks different. It's all a game to them and we've known it for ages; they lost Roe, so they got power in the states and went right on defying the law of the land. Wonder how they'll deal with losing DOMA? Wait for it...

And yes, Execution 500 puts the lie to Perry's "we value all life", even if his low-wage, low-safety-net state and everything else didn't already!
