Quote:Forecasters called for more supercharged temperatures Sunday as a heat wave gripped the Southwest, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized in serious condition Temperatures in Las Vegas shot up to 115 degrees on Saturday afternoon, two degrees short of a record, while Phoenix baked in 119 degrees. Large swaths of California sweltered under extreme heat warnings, which are expected to last into Tuesday night — and maybe even longer. In Death Valley — known as the hottest place on Earth — temps reached 125, according to the National Weather Service. Death Valley’s record high of 134 degrees, set nearly a century ago on July 10, 1913, stands as the planet’s highest recorded temperature. “We will probably start to see a rise in calls Sunday and Monday as the event prolongs,” Szymanski said in a statement. “People’s bodies will be more agitated the longer the event lasts and people may require medical assistance.” Elsewhere in Southern California, Palm Springs peaked at 122 degrees while the mercury in Lancaster hit 111 and 117 in Baker. The strip of gas stations and restaurants between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is known by travelers for the giant thermometer that often notes temperatures in the triple digits. To make matters worse, National Weather Service meteorologists John Dumas said cooling ocean breezes haven’t been traveling far enough inland to fan the region’s overheated valleys and deserts. In Northern California, record-breaking temperatures were recorded in Sacramento, where the high was 107 degrees; Marysville reached 109 degrees; and Stockton saw 106 degrees. Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho. The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the heat for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed. http://nation.time.com/2013/06/28/weekend-heat-wave-to-bake-western-u-s-2/#ixzz2XibZ7mSB

The fact that climate change is backed by thousands of peer-reviewed research papers with gigabytes upon gigabytes of data to back it up means nothing to them. They put it with conspiracies that have no credible evidence, many times with only some blogger or YouTube video proclaiming it as true. Their adherence to laissez-faire markets is also telling. The historically proven failures of the laissez-faire system, with its regular cycle of booms and busts, are lost on these people. They believe with all of their hearts the fantasy that the invisible hand of the market will resolve all problems. This of course flies in the fact of history, which demonstrates that those with power will abuse it. The paper reveals that people who reject climate change are doing it not out of any scientific basis, or even out of skepticism. They are rejecting it based on ideological principle only. As a result, arguing with them using only logic, or facts, will never work.

Quote:Highs in Las Vegas hit 117 on Sunday. This tied the all-time record for the city, first set in 1942 and tied in 2005, the National Weather Service reported. The reason isn't just the oppressive heat that is plaguing the region: It's the fact it is expected to hang around, and possibly even get worse, over the next few days. Las Vegas will remain under an excessive heat warning until Thursday night, as will Death Valley. Death Valley, California, resident Mike Wood says he's used to the heat. But when his running shoes begin to melt, he starts to pay attention. "The ground temperatures here can approach a 100 degrees so you're talking about pretty much boiling the shoes ... everything that kind of holds the shoe together kind of comes apart," Wood said. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/us/southwest-heat/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Quote:The mercury rocketed to 128 degrees Sunday in Death Valley National Park, the National Weather Service said, tying the record for the hottest June day anywhere in the country. But the Los Angeles Times reported that the National Park Service thermometer — 200 yards away — recorded a temperature of 129.9, which shatters the record for June. In Las Vegas, the temperature shot up to 117 degrees to tie the city’s record high and to cause more discomfort for residents and tourists in the sprawling desert city. Since record-keeping began in Las Vegas in 1937, the only other times the temperature reached 117 degrees were on July 19, 2005, and July 24, 1942, according to the National Weather Service. In Utah, a record 105-degree heat caused an interstate on-ramp to buckle in Salt Lake City, and hampered firefighters in their battle against three wildfires. The Interstate 215 on-ramp had to be closed for four hours Saturday night after a short section of it expanded, Utah Department of Transportation spokesman John Gleason said. The 119-degree high in Phoenix on Saturday marked the fourth-hottest day in metro Phoenix since authorities started keeping temperature records more than 110 years ago. Several Southern California communities set same-day record highs Saturday including Palm Springs, where the mercury peaked at 122 degrees. In Northern California, Redding reported a high of 110, Sacramento had 107 while Fresno saw 109. http://nation.time.com/2013/06/28/weekend-heat-wave-to-bake-western-u-s-2/#ixzz2Xo6qCNDk
