GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Cold, wet, and windy here in NOVA, so its time to have a fire and toast the first marshmallows of the winter season. The specially bent coathangers are all prepared and the fire has burned down to coals, so Madame and I carefully watch as they puff up and get just a bit crusty before pulling them off the heat. No s'mores yet, just pure gooey marshmallow goodness. The limit is three a night, so we take our time, with maybe a sip of single malt to go along. Speaking of s'mores, since we think that the newer Hershey bars seem thicker and less melty, we discuss making our own chocolate bars that'll be thinner and more amenable to going all soft and drippy when s'mores time does come around. We're also considering when to make the first Angel's Kiss, with hot coffee, Benedictine, and half & half. That brings to mind Rudesheimer Coffee - warmed Asbach brandy muddled with sugar, flamed, mixed with coffee, and topped with whipped cream. We first had these on a cold September day in Rudesheim, and it's a winter staple for us now. We bought a dutch oven with legs for hearthside cooking a couple of years ago in an antique store in West Virginia, but it didn't have a proper rimmed lid to use, so we were glad to find one in Cheyenne - antique again - on a road trip earlier this year, and look forward to making stews and frybread on the fire. Come to think of it, we almost didn't have fires this year because we were out of wood, and out usual wood guy failed to deliver, for some reason. Madame finally found a cord of good seasoned oak, the guy dumped it in the drive, and we moved it around back and stacked and covered it. It's really nice to know you have a good bit of firewood out there, ready to make things warm.
