President Barack Obama shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro on Tuesday as both leaders attended an emotional memorial for the late Nelson Mandela. The moment drew fire from key Republicans, including Sen. John McCain, who likened it to shaking hands with Hitler. http://news.yahoo.com/obama-shakes-hands-with-cuba-s-raul-castro-13250

Absolutely, BDN. You're right; when one side makes a big deal out of something, calls it another holocaust or likens something to "Hitler", it's good to remember that BOTH sides have done essentially the same things. Perspective is always good in keeping us from going over the top.

Great, a lesson in perspective from Niki.

Are we at war with Cuba ?
No ?
Well then, perhaps being polite is, yanno, this thing called diplomacy which happens to generally prevent them - just a thought.

Only, with the black/white binary thinking of RWAs, there's no room for co-existence, which is why I consider em insane and dangerous.
Case in point, look what happened when some nimrod sent that absolute nutter Bolton to the UN - A lotta folk who'd been tenative allies till then blew us off, and most of them on the fence took the other side.

While I ain't one to talk, sometimes being polite is the grease that moves the wheels... and sometimes, it ain't, I notice Anthony don't come here no more.

Cute, when presented with proof that it's a non-issue that both sides partake in - whine that someone actually noticed.

Yep, Frem, sometimes diplomacy works. Look at the Iran Arms Deal. People complain but when was the last time anyone actually got them to the table.

The U.S. can embargo for the next 500 years and Cuba will not fall, but maybe with a little "slick" talk we can have an effect on the landscape - take a look at our relations with Viet Nam, who would've thunk it back in the late 70s..............just a thought.

Besides, it's another untapped market

Diplomacy for the whackos is a hand-grenade handshake, followed by a RPG chaser............count yer fingers and yer toes, we are not responsible for any missing appendages

Speaking of lacking perspective.

Did you let anyone get away with "but Clinton..." during Bushs two terms?
Of course not.
But somehow it is okay now. It somehow shows perspective or some such.

Stick with hurling insults, at least you are semi-capable at that.

Not just that, a lot of this bellicose bluster actually KEEPS bastards in power, cause all they gotta do is point to us as a handy external threat, hell if we'd wanted to depose Fidel Castro way back when the easiest way to do it would have been to leave well the hell enough alone!
For that matter, our jackassery is what elevated Chavez to near total power, and our disgusting meddling not only propped up scum like The Shah and Saddam, when they pitched out The Shah it *ensured* that dickhead Khomeni kept an iron grip, and one can ask the Somalians all about our "help", too.

Sometimes the smartest thing to do is leave well the hell enough alone.
And the best example for last - the only reason the middle east puts up with them fanatic dickwads is because they're the one and only ever successful bulwark against our aggression, rapacious exploitation, and constant sabotage and espionage, like a mean ass guard dog you don't really like, but need to protect your property, and were that threat not present, they'd be the first to string the jerks up themselves cause they HATE them, but it's a combination of the devil-you-know, and us not leavin alone which handed them power on a plate.

I still find it ironic that the american rightwingnuts have such a problem with em since they both BEHAVE the same way, and frankly I think a lot of it is jealousy that they can't get away with treating women and minorities like that here.

Anyways, it's a vicious cycle and the leaders on both ends KNOW it, without each other to point at to present that external threat which keeps em in power, the rank and file might start questioning what the hell is going on and start balking at the slaughter of people who in the end, are little different than they are.

We have a 50 year embargo on Saudi Arabia ? Weren't we siding w/ Iraq during the 80's, against Iran ? (*Much like we sided w/ the Soviet Union, to combat the NAZIS ? ), and didn't Nixon open up China ?

Wow... strikes 1,2 and 3 here. What a colossal fail, Niki.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Exactly. Ask Niki.
