'INCREDIBLE ACT OF AGGRESSION'

Quote:

A sense of escalating crisis in Crimea -- an autonomous region of eastern Ukraine with strong loyalty to neighboring Russia -- swirled, with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry condemning what he called Russia's "incredible act of aggression."

Speaking on the CBS program "Face The Nation," Kerry -- who is set to arrive in Kiev on Tuesday -- said several foreign powers are looking at economic consequences if Russia does not withdraw its forces.

"All of them, every single one of them are prepared to go to the hilt in order to isolate Russia with respect to this invasion," he said. "They're prepared to put sanctions in place, they're prepared to isolate Russia economically."

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/02/world/europe/ukraine-politics/index.html
?hpt=hp_t1

Quote:

Putin secured permission from his parliament on Saturday to use military force to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine and told U.S. President Barack Obama he had the right to defend Russian interests and nationals, spurning Western pleas not to intervene.

Russian forces have already bloodlessly seized Crimea, an isolated Black Sea peninsula where Moscow has a naval base.

On Sunday, they surrounded several small Ukrainian military outposts there and demanded the Ukrainian troops disarm. Some refused, leading to standoffs, although no shots were fired.

From being an important part of the Ukraine, suddenly the Crimea is an isolated peninsula? You can already see the west scraping the Crimea off the bottom of their shoes.

Yes, indeed, Russia is going to face serious (economic) consequences!

The media bias- both ways- is just amazing.

SHINY, BRENDA- I was really busy and I couldn't respond in full last night. Still don't have the time this AM but wanted to say this in passing: If you think our (i.e. the west's) involvement in Ukraine is about "freedom" then you have some incredibly rose-colored glasses on. It's not about freedom, its about making the world safe for capitalism, and extending the rule of America over the whole globe. And while Putin may have an ego ... Obama doesn't? You need to educate yourselves a lot more about the state of the world.

Hey sigs....

I don't watch ANY news, but as I was making a pot of coffee on my night shift I saw more than 60 seconds of this and what John Kerry said....

All I thought was "he's not speaking for me, Russia."

I hated GWB for 6 years for the illegal wars he got us into. Obama got us into two more while breaking his promise to end the existing wars.

John Kerry's little rant was meek and pathetic with a little bit of passive-aggressive playground-bullying tactics mixed in.

All I thought was "STFU dude. You and your party already did the best you could to make sure that we don't have any bullets to buy for the guns you couldn't take away. (I know I bitch about taxes on cigarettes, but it's getting that you can only load your gun if you're rich if you don't know how to make your own bullets)

When Vladmir calls Kerry's pathetic mouth diarheea for the bluff that it was, he's not even going to have to lift a finger. He'll just send cheap Chinese allys to f us up by the boatloads.

I don't care how tough you think you are. It's no fun getting beat up by four guys, especially when you're the only one unarmed.

The LAST fucking thing I need is the Chinese calling in YOUR debt at my doorstep and I've only got 7 rounds left......

Whatever you're doing Russia, I don't give a shit. More power to you.

Do me a favor and keep those wiley Chinese in line. Don't ever get cocky as if you own them. They might not be smarter than you individually, but in sheer brain mass alone, 1/3 of the entire world's brain matter has an address somewhere within the borders of China.

That remains to be seen. The western part of the Ukraine is flapping it's wings and fluttering on the ground because Yats realizes that the west will scrape off Crimea unless something changes. Yats' only hope of getting the west involved is to escalate the situation and make it look like Putin crossed some sort of line that the west may have already discussed with him. ("We'll give you Crimea but don't...").

In any case, back to Putin.

Everything that the USA has done since the fall of the Soviet Union has been to destroy Russia. All of the inclusions of Eastern Europe into the EU is not because Eastern Europe is such a fucking great economic prize, but because once a nation is included into the EU, inclusion in NATO is soon to follow, along with missiles and troops under western control... right on Russia's border. I think we all know this, really. We either ignore it, or deny it, but we know it.

AS LONG AS WE THREATEN RUSSIA, PUTIN WILL THREATEN US. If WE STOP threatening Russia, Putin will back off. But here, this article says it far better than I can...

Quote:

The American press portrays Putin as being the bad guy and the aggressor in the Ukraine crisis.

Putin is certainly no saint. A former KGB agent, Putin's net worth is estimated at some $40 billion dollars ... as he has squeezed money out of the Russian economy by treating the country as his own personal fiefdom. And all sides appear to have dirt on their hands in the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

But we can only see the bigger picture if we take a step back and gain a little [perspective-Signy] understanding of the history underlying the current tensions.

Indeed, the fact that the U.S. has allegedly paid billions of dollars to anti-Russian forces in Ukraine - and even purportedly picked the Ukrainian president - has to be seen in context.

Veteran New York Times reporter Steven Kinzer notes at the Boston Globe:

Quote:

From the moment the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the United States has relentlessly pursued a strategy of encircling Russia, just as it has with other perceived enemies like China and Iran. It has brought 12 countries in central Europe, all of them formerly allied with Moscow, into the NATO alliance. US military power is now directly on Russia’s borders.

...Stephen Cohen - professor emeritus at New York University and Princeton University who has long focused on Russia - explained this weekend on CNN:

We are witnessing as we talk the making possibly of the worst history of our lifetime. We are watching the descending of a new cold war divide between west and east, only this time, it is not in far away Berlin, it's right on Russia's borders through the historical civilization in Ukraine. It's a crisis of historic magnitude. If you ask how we got in it, how we got into the crisis, and how therefore do we get out, it is time to stop asking why Putin - why Putin is doing this or that, but ask about the American policy, and the European Union policy that led to this moment.

... George Kennan.... was considered [a] great strategic thinker about Russia among American diplomats but he warned when we expanded NATO [under Bill Clinton], that this was the most fateful mistake of American foreign policy and that it would lead to a new Cold War. George lived to his hundreds, died a few years ago, but his truth goes marching on. The decision to move NATO beginning in the 90's continuing under Bush and continuing under Obama, is right now on Russia's borders.

And if you want to know for sure, and I have spent a lot of time in Moscow, if you want to know what the Russian power elite thinks Ukraine is about, it is about bringing it into NATO. One last point, that so-called economic partnership [with the EU- Signy] that Yanukovych, the elected president of Ukraine did not sign, and that set off the streets - the protests in the streets in November, which led to this violence in and confrontation today, that so-called economic agreement included military clauses which said that Ukraine by signing this so called civilization agreement had to abide by NATO military policy. This is what this is about from the Russian point of view, the ongoing western march towards post Soviet Russia.

and...
Quote:

... The only question now is whether the new Ukrainian government will accept the loss of Crimea quietly or try to retaliate against Russian speakers in Ukraine—offering Putin a pretext for invasion, and thereby precipitating an all-out civil war.

This is beyond precious...

President Obama’s foreign policy is based on fantasy

By Editorial Board, Published: March 2

FOR FIVE YEARS, President Obama has led a foreign policy based more on how he thinks the world should operate than on reality. It was a world in which “the tide of war is receding” and the United States could, without much risk, radically reduce the size of its armed forces. Other leaders, in this vision, would behave rationally and in the interest of their people and the world. Invasions, brute force, great-power games and shifting alliances — these were things of the past. Secretary of State John F. Kerry displayed this mindset on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday when he said, of Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, “It’s a 19th century act in the 21st century.”

That’s a nice thought, and we all know what he means. A country’s standing is no longer measured in throw-weight or battalions. The world is too interconnected to break into blocs. A small country that plugs into cyberspace can deliver more prosperity to its people (think Singapore or Estonia) than a giant with natural resources and standing armies.

-is-based-on-fantasy/2014/03/02/c7854436-a238-11e3-a5fa-55f0c77bf39c_story.html

That opening line could be said for pretty much EVERYTHING from the Left. They ignore reality, and believe that what they WISH were true actually IS true. So wrong, on so many things, it's unfathomable.

More of the article says...
Quote:

Unfortunately, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not received the memo on 21st-century behavior. Neither has China’s president, Xi Jinping, who is engaging in gunboat diplomacy against Japan and the weaker nations of Southeast Asia. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is waging a very 20th-century war against his own people, sending helicopters to drop exploding barrels full of screws, nails and other shrapnel onto apartment buildings where families cower in basements. These men will not be deterred by the disapproval of their peers, the weight of world opinion or even disinvestment by Silicon Valley companies. They are concerned primarily with maintaining their holds on power.
This is just as mistaken as the article claims about Obama.

First of all, Obama is all about efficiency. Why send in troops, when you can "get the job done" with Special Forces, drones, or by paying $5 billion dollars to NGOs and internal opposition groups? That route is much cheaper, and its easier to get political cover by claiming that it was an "internal revolution. That way, you can claim moral superiority and you can even drum up internal support. Obama is wrong for other reasons, but THIS is not one of them. So don't let your rightwing sources fool you with incompetent analyses: Obama is every bit as hegemonistic as GWB was. He just wants to get "more done for less".

Quote:

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude. Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding.

David Dunning and Justin Kruger of Cornell University conclude, "the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others".

This, from you?

"The right" on this board (that's you, zit, jongs, and geezer) have NEVER been able to figure out what's going on. But don't feel too lonely, because liberals (who are not "the left" by the way) seem to gave a pretty big blind spot for Obama specifically and Democrats in general. So far, the best analyses that I've found come from staunch libertarians (like Ron Paul), the far right, "kook websites" (says something about the mainstream media), and the far left. They're the only ones who've managed to keep their heads above the torrent of propaganda, isolating important events and processes from the shitstream.

YOU OTOH... I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the times you've ever been proven right about anything, and its never been about anything important. "Raw and in your face?" Oh, dear.

"Behind The Kiev Snipers It Was Somebody From The New Coalition" - A Stunning New Leak Released

Quote:

Earlier today an even more shocking recording has been "leaked" this time one between the always concerned about human rights EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet, in which it is revealed on tape that all those photos of horrifying deaths of Ukrainians by snipers during the last days of the Median stand off, were in fact caused not by Snipers controlled by Yanukovich, but that the snipers shot at both protesters and police in Kiev were allegedly hired by Maidan leaders!

Here is the key exchange, just after 8 minutes into the conversation :

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-03-05/behind-kiev-snipers-it-was-so
mebody-new-coaltion-stunning-new-leak-reveals-truth

Paet: "All the evidence shows that people who were killed by snipers from [on] both sides, policemen and people from the streets, that they were the same snipers killing people from both sides. ... Some photos that showed it is the same handwriting, the same type of bullets, and it is really disturbing that now the new coalition they don't want to investigate what exactly happened. So there is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers, it was not Yanukovych, but it was somebody from the new coalition."

Ashton: "I think we do want to investigate. I mean, I didn’t pick that up, that’s interesting. Gosh."

Paet: "It already discreditates (sic) this new coalition."

So first US orchestrates the Kiev overthrow, and now the new "leaders" of Ukraine are allegedly found to have fired against their own people - the same provocation they subsequently used to run Yanukovich out of the country and install a pro-Western puppet government. Of course, said pro-Western coalition has not been discreditated (sic) because Ms. Ashton has sternly refused to investigate, knowing quite well how horribly this would reflect on the new Ukraine "leadership" - a government which shot its own people to fabricate the pretext under which it rose to power

I'm going to keep flogging this thread because damnit, it's the perfect real-life example of how brainwashed we are, and how the government and a complicit media uses that to sweep us off our feet with a torrent of biased coverage.

Did you support the invasion of Afghanistan?
Iraq?
Libya?

The "rebels" of Syria?

Did you originally support the "Arab Spring" protesters?

Did you support the formation of S Sudan?

All of these were presented with much favorable press, hailed as either an outbreak of "freedom" or a necessary action for self defense. Nobody looked behind the press clippings to figure out what was REALLY going on. Nobody noticed that every conflict situation was presented VERY one-sidedly, the "other side" being so absent from the press as to be quite literally non-existent except as the boogeymen that the heroic freedom fighters were battling against.

It never occurred to anyone just to go to Wikipedia, and educate themselves in the most fundamental issues of the nation: who is on one side, who is on another? What are they fighting for? Who is backing them, and why? (IF you read the word "freedom" please cross it out. Insurgents and even terrorists have learned to use that word because they know that we respond reflexively with unquestioning support)

I hate to be a curmudgeon, but I've learned over many years that every single news item in every press release- and I don't care if it comes from Voice of Russia or al Jazeera or MSNBC or Fox News - needs to be placed into a mental quarantine until basic objective research shows it to be true, false, or unverifiable. You can't keep reacting emotionally to press releases which are MEANT to jerk your chain. (Oh, and the same goes for advertising.)

Being grownups, you're supposed to be responsible for what you think, just like you're supposed to be responsible for what you eat. So... be responsible. Don't let others determine for you what you think and how you feel.

Yah well, thing is, I do - just that nobody ever listens.
Hell, I knew damn well what was going on in Nicaragua way back when the coverup was still in place, especially given that was the catalyst for my breaking ties with the military.

For a fact, the NeoFeudoFascists who run this country have always reached out to the most sociopathic authoritarian scum they could find for their props and puppets, and this latest thing in the Ukraine is no damn different, although thankfully their efforts in Venezuela are falling flat because the populace as a whole has seen enough of our meddling to know it for what it is - same reason it never took in Cuba.

What's really got my knickers in a twist is the fact that somewhere in this Ukrainian mess american tax money and resources went to support a pack of 2nd/3rd generation original Nazis and their NeoNazi flunkies, apparently without any kind of actual approval - given that I think the United States still officially classes them as "enemies", the actions of Nuland, Pyatt, and the rest of that cabal do, I believe, constitute the minimum legal definition of Treason.
Quote:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

As noted in the phone call, this *was* an "overt Act", and with many more 'witnesses' than two - at the very LEAST it is material support of Terrorism and potentially war crimes.

And all the resources and effort spent on this bullshit for political points is just that much we don't have to deal with problems HERE, not to mention the *inevitable* blowback when these pipedreams collapse and the fuckers we propped up turn on us, all when we coulda-shoulda-woulda left well the hell enough alone to begin with.

Oh, and just to run a chill up your spine, some of the involved NeoCons were actually *HOPING* for a "Limited Nuclear Exchange" cause they seem to think it would destabilize our own Government enough for them to seize power.

Yeah, well...
The French Nobility thought that too back in the 1790's.
One might remember how well it worked out for them.

Well, this one might linger awhile...

Right, Left or Center, the general attitude towards the whole Ukraine mess seems to be This is bullshit! - now of course depending on faction and flavor, the WHY its bullshit to them might differ significantly, but the general consensus overall, is bovine waste.

Sig - if you saw my posted vid of Dems mocking Mitt over his Russia point, and are still trying to pick a fight when you actually are AGREEING with me ( per your funny of Obama & Putin ), then I'm at a loss for words. The central point being, all those Dems were stunningly wrong, yet all had the audacity to say Mitt said something " stupid ".
Rappy- if you read my post about the vid, you wouldn't be posting this.

Here, I'll keep it simple. Obama is wrong. Mitt is wrong. They're BOTH wrong. Utterly, fantastically, 150% wrong. There, clear enough? And the reason is...

Quote:

The issue at hand is the array of Dems, and the asinine comments they made about Mitt, per his views on Russian being our geopolitical foe.
Russia is NOT our geopolitical foe. I said that already, but you seem to have missed that point, too. I'm CERTAIN you have a reading problem! Let me repeat it

Quote:

Russia isn't MY geopolitical foe. Al Qaida, maybe. China, probably. Corporations, definitely. But Russia???? Not really!

See?

I think Mittens is wrong for saying (maybe even thinking) that Russia is our main geopolitical foe. In kindergarten terms... terms perhaps you'll understand... any problems we've had with Russia is because WE STARTED IT.

Obama is wrong too, but for an entirely different reason: He has neocon appointees like Nuland over which he seems to have no control. Nuland, you may recall, bragged that the USA has spent FIVE BILLION DOLLARS TO DESTABILIZE THE UKRAINE. That's a pretty damning admission. It would be as is China were to brag that they spent $10 billion to destabilize Canada... and managed to do it, replacing a democratically-elected pro-US government with a pro-Chinese one, and started establishing missile bases on our border. DO you think we'd react? YOU BETCHA!

Quote:

After three visits to Ukraine in five weeks, Victoria Nuland explains that in the past two decades, the United States has spent five Billion dollars ($5,000,000,000) to subvert Ukraine, and assures her listeners that there are prominent businessmen and government officials who support the US project to tear Ukraine away from its historic relationship with Russia and into the US sphere of interest (via “Europe”).

So, yanno- I'm sorry to say that your understanding of the situation... reducing it to some sort of Democrat-Republican football game analogy... is a flea-sized understanding of a large event. Real life isn't like a football game. There are larger events- sometimes non-human ones- that we have to pay attention to. Things that go beyond the Republican-Democrat game. By analogy, a storm surge which floods out a stadium is a bigger event than a football game. Also, when it comes to picking sides, you should pick more carefully. Sometimes neither side is worth picking.

The Ballad Of Vlad

Vlad! ... the man they call Vlad! ...
He sent in masked troops to Crimea's shore
Stood up to Obama and gave him what for
Ukraine's fear of him now is making them mad
The KGB hero, the man they call Vlad.

Now Vlad likes to wrestle tigers
He catches fish with only his hands
He looked around at the world's leaders
And saw they had no masculine glands.

So he said I can do whatever I want to
And tell the world to kiss my ass
And if the EU or NATO has a problem
I'll just turn off their oil and gas.

He sent in masked troops to Crimea's shore
Stood up to Obama and gave him what for
Ukraine's fear of him now is making them mad
The KGB hero, the man they call Vlad.

You repeating the same thing over and over again doesn't make YOUR SECONDHAND OPINION any more convincing than it was the first time around (which, BTW, I heard and answered... twice).

It seems to me that with all the time you spend on this board, you would have learned a little bit about how to make a case for YOUR OPINION. Bring some history to the table, explain to us why you think Russia is (yet another one of our) number-one enemies. Show us where they have threatened OUR INTERESTS... show us how those events (assuming you can actually find any) have cost us.... the USA... a loss of territorial integrity or internal safety. If you make a case that we have an interest in such far-flung places as Syria and Georgia, Asian continent (not Georgia USA... altho frankly I'm not sure we have an interest there either) show us what those interests are. Using words like "freedom" (which you can't even define) doesn't count. Be specific, be real.

I may counterpose other thoughts and other history to yours. Up for the challenge? Or are you gonna be all trollish?

KIEV AND THE WEST CALL CRIMEAN VOTE A "SHAM"
The government in Kiev called the Crimean referendum a "sham". Citing territorial integrity, the government in Kiev - which has yet to stand for election- said it would refuse to recognize the vote, and that Crimea should be returned to the Ukraine.

KIEV DELAYS NATIONAL ELECTIONS
Citing national security, the transitional government of Kiev has canceled national elections indefinitely. When asked whether this would effect aid and loan guarantees from the West, and IMF loans, western sources and IMF head Christine Lagarde said they did not foresee any difficulty with the Ukrainian government being able to maintain its financial authority over the nation. There are many upcoming agreements to be signed with the EU.

KIEV ANNOUNCES AUSTERITY
Because of the cutoff of natural gas deliveries and the subsequent price hike, the transitional Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatseniuk, has announced that natural gas subsidies would be cut back significantly. The IMF has insisted, as it has done with most of its governmental loans, that subsidies be cut in order to shore up governmental finances. Yatseniuk, himself a banker and favored by the United States to head the transitional government, has full authority to obtain loans and sign international agreements, according to the EU and the USA.

KIEV CLAIMS RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE IN DONETSK AND OTHER EASTERN CITIES, SENDS IN TROOPS
Kiev has claimed that Russian troops, disguised as pro-Russian militants, have taken over government buildings and have shot several Ukrainian citizens. Kiev has sent in troops from western Ukraine to quell these disturbances and oust the invaders.

STEP ONE: KIEV AND THE WEST CALL CRIMEAN VOTE A "SHAM"

Quote:

Outside Crimea's parliament, the leaving party for Ukraine - and the welcome celebration for Russia - had begun. Crowds of people waved flags and sang Russian pop songs, delighted that, as far as their newly-installed regional government was concerned, they now live in the Russian Federation.

The law was rushed through the autonomous province's parliament, with 79 of 81 MPs backing the proposal to leave Ukraine. There is, of course, the small matter of the region's referendum on that same question, now brought forward to 16 March. Crimea's First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Temirgaliev told me he was certain of victory.

"Ukrainians will become Russian citizens here", he said. "We will win this vote with 70 or 75%. The referendum is legitimate."

But Kiev begs to differ. The new Ukrainian Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has called the move "illegitimate and with no legal basis" [unlike the current President and partial Rada in Kiev?] as Ukraine's constitution states that any change to its borders must be approved by the whole country.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26486289

Referendum still to be held, but events are moving faster than I anticipated.

STEP FOUR: KIEV CLAIMS RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE IN DONETSK AND OTHER EASTERN CITIES, SENDS IN TROOPS

Another East-Ukraine City Falls To Pro-Russian Protesters As Ukraine Denies Sending Troops To Crimea
Quote:

Despite clear evidence otherwise, presented here extensively yesterday, this morning Ukraine has denied that is has "plans to send armed forces to Crimea. They are doing their routine work which the armed have always had." Adding somewhat to the confusion was the statement by Pavlo Shysholin, head of country’s border guard service tells reporters in Kiev, who said that so far Ukrainian border guards denied entry to 3,500 people and that Ukraine border troops remain in Crimea, would leave only if "forced" but more importanly: UKRAINE BORDER TROOPS BOOST FORCES ON EAST BORDER: SHYSHOLIN. So there is an escalation in the mobilization, only not toward Crimea, which the Russians already control entirely, but the critical East, which as everyone knows, is the next target for Putin annexation once the Crimean referendum passes in one week. Confirming just this were just released photos from another major city in east Ukraine, this time Lugansk, where pro-Russian protesters just stormed and took over the city administration building. Their demand: to be part of the March 16 referendum to become part of Russia.

Well, I'm sure we'll see this replayed over and over, so this will be STEP 4, and STEP 6, and STEP 9 and...
