‘McGruff the Crime Dog’ sentenced to 16 years in jail on drug and weapons charges

An actor who once travelled to schools playing “McGruff the Crime Dog” has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple drug and weapons charges.

John R. Morales was arrested in Galveston, Texas in 2011 when, after having been pulled over for speeding, drug-sniffing dogs detected the presence of marijuana in his vehicle. Police searched it and found diagrams for two indoor pot-growing operations on the front seat, as well as seeds in the trunk.

When police raided his home, they found over 1,000 marijuana plants, 27 weapons — including a grenade launcher — and over 9,000 rounds of ammunition.

“McGruff the Crime Dog” was created for the National Crime Prevention Council in 1981 and appears on commercials imploring children to stay in school and off drugs.

Actors wearing “McGruff” costumes so frequently appear in schools that a 1987 recognition survey indicated that 96 percent of teens recognized the “the Crime Dog” and his motto, “Take A Bite Out Of Crime.”

More like takin a bite out of some hash brownies, this one.

Mind you, I had a slight grudge against the whole concept from the early to mid80's when they came round to public schools insisting that kids get fingerprinted "for their own safety" - I smelled a rat even then and walked home when their attempts to bribe and intimidate me into playing along got on my nerves, and as usual my mom backed me up.
I was right too, some time later it was revealed that they immediately databased them fingerprints, leading to one student being wrongly accused of burglary via fingerprint evidence, and then when the actual burglar was caught, nearly getting in legal trouble cause what he *was* doing, was sneaking in the daughters window, as if that's so damn uncommon an occurance.

Anyhows, ever since, I've always looked askance at programs which try to scare parents into handing over their kids fingerprints/DNA/what-have-you, under the guise of protecting them from kidnapping, cause I feel there's usually sinister motives there.
I DO think parents should keep a couple locks of hair and a fingerprint card, but in THEIR possession only, rather than handing it off to so-called-authorities who've proven they cannot be trusted.

And yeah, verily, this particular bit is pure damn Shadenfreude.
Karma payment long in coming, you ask me.

A crook?

In Colorado or Washington state, he'd be a businessman with a gun collection.

Having drugs & guns... victimless crimes.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Apparently NOT in Galveston, Texas... ( a great left- wing city, in a famously liberal state, isn't it? Didn't they vote for Obama there?)

Fair point.
But when one allies with the Jackboots hell bent on MAKING those things crimes, it's pretty hard to feel any sympathy.

And yeah, I know how copspeak works, prolly counted every seed and flake as a seperate plant, no doubt that "27 weapons" includes every knife in his kitchen, and the "grenade launcher" is a legal 37mm pyrotechnic type.

Not to mention the well known fact that police drug dogs are nothing more than a sham and a scam to get around the 4th Amendment, nothing more than trick ponies trained to fake a "hit" on command.

I know it's bullshit, you know it's bullshit - it's just that when badge lickers wind up on the business end of this crap it's also kind of karmic justice.

I notice that the article didn't say when he played McGruff. Maybe he figured it out and became more enlightened before he was busted for stuff that any reasonable person would consider free enterprise. Folks change.
