the warmists will admit that there is nothing we can do to reverse the effects of climate change, and that it is pointless to carry on w/ carbon credits , mandatory GREEN programs, AND that we can better serve mankind through other means, such as direct funding for the poor, and helping under-developed nations.

Deal ?

Tony Soprano : "You know where I was when you called me yesterday? I was sitting in my car outside a massage parlor while my associate was inside beating the shit out of the owner. And you know what? I wish it had been me in there".

It's not pointless IMO. In case it doesn't come to the worst, cleaner air & water & land is still a good thing...

Wisely using resources to help mankind = not doing anything ?

This proves you think its politics, and nothing else.

It is for those who don't have what most would consider the basics. Yeah.

But if you're of the opinion that we'll some how go extinct over the most minimal global warming, then I'm wasting my time.

Wow. Just wow. So Rap would go from "It's a religious cult of fanatics" to...what, admitting it's real...on a DEAL?

That is kind of the quintessential proof of trolling, isn't it? In other words, he never really believed what he's been furiously espousing all this time, and he's "willing" to "believe" something else, if...

No more need be said.

Rappy, your proposal makes as much sense as saying "I'd believe 2+2 = 4, if only we didn't use arithmetic to calculate taxes" or "I'd believe the earth is round, if only you'd all agree that we need to invade jihadist nations".

A thinking person either accepts a hypothesis because the evidence points in that direction, or they reject it because the evidence isn't strong enough. Obviously, you know nothing of the process of using evidence to arrive at truth. And you imagine you know something about science, and claim that you're "fact-driven"?

Oh, by the way- your proposal is moronic on its face. But aside from that, it's so weasel-worded and disingenuous that- if anyone were unwise enough to take you up on that idea - they would find that you're suggesting the same-old-same-old that you've always promoted. Because in YOUR mind, "direct funding for the poor" would morph into a charity-meme (as it always does with you), and "helping underdeveloped nations" would somehow turn into giving free rein to corporations to rape and pillage. I'm sure there would be nothing in there for the idea of fundamentally changing the laws which enforce poverty, powerlessness, and inequality.

Gawd, what a stupid troll you are!

Apparenly more needs to be said, for you to get a clue here. No one has ever denied that the climate of the planet, over time , does change. That's never been the issue. And whether humanity plays a 0.01% role in that change, 5% role, 0%, or 65%, the overall point is that there is very little we can effectively do about it, either way. Even the most die hard believer in AGW knows that to be true. So why not just dispense w/ this idiotic infighting and start actually doing something that'll make a REAL difference to the people living NOW, instead of what MIGHT happen, 100 to 1000 years from now ?

And you call that " trolling " ?

Really?

If humanity is a large part of climate change... in other words, if we caused it... then we can change it. And even if we DIDN'T cause the problem, we can STILL fix it.

After all, we didn't cause smallpox, but we eliminated it from the planet.

Or are you saying that humans are so stupid and weak-willed that we can't effectively participate in our own survival?

So, you're telling me that man could turn off ALL carbon production tomorrow, and the planet would start cooling immediately ?

I don't think that we caused it so much as we're speeding it up considerably, but I read somewhere that if all pollution just *stopped* right now, climate change would stay in play.

Yanno what, CHRIS, we could still, at this late date, change our fate. It would involve not only slowing or stopping the increased carbon dioxide emissions, but taking active steps to reduce the carbon dioxide in the air. In a number of previous suggestions, I listed some environmental responsibility/ remediation/ geo-engineering that would help in that direction

Stop burning down/ cutting down tropical forests for palm oil plantations, cattle ranching, and lumber. Stop stripping land bare from sheep overgrazing. Stop turning so much land over to corn-for-ethanol production (It takes as much as 800 gallons of water and a crapload of fertilizer to produce one gallon of ethanol). There are some very beneficial silvipastoracultures (tree growing and grazing) which are more productive on less land. Biochar and active forest management can help forests absorb more carbon and also reduce wildfires. Pre-planting a variety of native heat-resistant species will help "move" biomes faster, and maintaining wetlands not only absorbs carbon but also improves water quality at river mouths. Stop poisoning our oceans with argicultural, sewage and industrial waste and creating massive dead zones. Enforce carbon-absorbing farming practices. Seriously, there are probably hundreds - if not thousands- of remediation/ geo-engineering projects that have been well-studied and are ready to go.

Industrialized nations need to stop using, and wasting, so much energy. Start using human-power again, instead. Produce the basics; to hell with the toys.

Less-developed nations need to halt their population growth. It can be done. China leaned on Vietnam for a couple of years, and Vietnam's birthrate went from 6 children per woman to 2. Si se puede.

So, there are a lot of things we COULD do. But... we won't. Because TPTB would lose money. Because we've never done that before. Because it would impinge our personal freedoms. Because it would require the kind of focus and coordination that we've never shown before. So although there are a lot of real solutions, from a technical standpoint, "human nature" gets in the way. Heck, just look at rappy... he's as obdurate and fact-resistant as any jihadist. There are people like him all over the world- different cultures, but the same mindset. And the wealthy would never EVER agree to such a plan, and they seem to be the ones determining what the entire globe does.

No, according to what I've read we're causing it. Theoretically, if one pays attention to the Ice Ages and the Milankovitch cycles which drive them (cyclic variations in Earth's orbit) we should be in an Ice Age by now.

Quote:

but I read somewhere that if all pollution just *stopped* right now, climate change would stay in play. You think that's in error, Signy?
So they say. I keep hearing/ reading that temperature increase lags carbon dioxide emissions by 40-50 years, so the temperature increase that we're experiencing now is from the carbon dioxide emitted back in the '70s.

I've never heard the rationale for that lag... I think it has to do with the 100-year residence time of carbon dioxide in the atmo. (In other words, if we emitted a "pulse" of CO2 it would take 100 years to clear). So whatever is emitted persists for a long time, and it keeps on absorbing heat for its entire lifetime, and that heat accumulates.

That's why I think we need to work on CO2 reduction techniques. Yanno - speed up the absorption of CO2.
