Women are sometimes advised to keep a low profile and let their work “speak for itself.” But in Abramson’s case, eight Pulitzers did not speak loudly enough. Revenue growth did not speak loudly enough. Successful new digital products did not speak loudly enough.

It would be odd if politics dictated that you weren’t allowed to fire a woman, even if she were the most powerful woman in journalism. But the way it happened makes it hard to read the newspaper’s own front-page story
www.nytimes.com/2014/05/15/business/media/jill-abramson-being-replaced
-as-top-editor-at-times.html
and not see Baquet, Sulzberger, Keller, and all the powerful men in the history of the Times on the inside and one loyal soldier now out.

Which of her offenses was so grave that higher-ups are going to such extraordinary lengths to humiliate her? It’s very hard for me not to suspect an element of masculine umbrage to this, a determination that Abramson should not merely be let go, but also put in her place.

And yet, we’ll never really know, will we? This is what troubles every ambitious woman: You’ll never really know how big a role sexism plays in your setbacks.

Abramson angered Baquet by trying to bring on a Woman! co-Managing Editor

Updated by Matthew Yglesias on May 14, 2014, 9:46 p.m.

The New York Times' own reporting on the NYT adds a new axis of conflict to the story saying that Dean Baquet, number two under Abramson and now the new boss, was "angered over a decision by Ms. Abramson to try to hire an editor from The Guardian, Janine Gibson, and install her alongside Mr. Baquet in a co-managing editor position without consulting him."

Not every day that when boss and subordinate disagree about something, the boss gets fired and the subordinate gets to take over.

The rag is over 40 million in the hole, the rags circulation has dropped since she became uber boss. She was a pain in the ass to work for, when she sent her laywer in to ask for more money little pinch said fuck this, she isn't getting it done. My guess is she is NOT the victim here, the rag is losing money, laying off staff and selling aasets. Sending in her laywer to get more money from a corp with money trouble was a stupid idea.

Well ZIT - you seem to be in the know.

Maybe you could look this up - did anybody get raises? Did the losses slow down or speed up during her tenure? These would be important questions to answer.

Ah, The New York Times ... the beacon of libtard light leading the cause of women's pay equality gets exposed for their utter hypocrisy just like Obama did ... priceless!

It's not about the liberals, it's one very rich man, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr., whose family trust controls 88% of the NY Times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times#Ownership

Thanks to the internet (we're using it now) YOU could look up these factoids and prove me right or wrong...you'd love to prove me wrong.

Fact is the New York Rag is over 40 million in the hole and this woman may have asked for a raise at the wrong time. This has nothing to do with politics but since the TIMES is a left-wing rag, I have to laugh at their pain.

Oh but it absolutely is! The issue is not the pay issue ... it's that the two MAIN liberal voices in America screaming about the phony women's pay inequality issue got caught paying their female employees less than men..... first the Obama WH Staff at 12% less for women, and now the NY Times. Typical liberal hypocrisy .... do as I say, not as I do.

Well, ok people (ahem - you righturds) seem determined to troll. Sorry, not gonna bite. But as a hint - maybe you could get together and decide on your troll. 'Cause yanno, you can't seem to get it straight. Either this is a liberal mag hypocritically not following such 'liberal' principles as equal pay for deserving work, or she's an incompetent whiner let go for cause.

I think she's an incompetent whiner BUT, since the NYT is a left-wing rag I must LAUGH AT THEIR PAIN!

Like anything else, it's probably a bit of both.

Or it could be something else entirely.

I heard she loved making appearances and speaking engagements more than actually doing her job.

Lots of rumors flying around. Not sure who to believe on this one.

I heard that Jill Abramson was fired when Dean Baquet, the managing editor and nincompoop, went to the ever-so great grandson of the founder of the NYTimes, Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., and told him Jill had hurt his feelings and was about to replace him with a woman. The lawyers, who do all of Sulzberger's actual thinking for him, told him that the firing was a very bad thing that would get the Times sued. The lawyers then made up rumors to justify what Sulzberger Junior had thoughtlessly done.

Various newsroom suck-ups, hoping to win favor with the new boss, have been spreading those false rumors.

That would explain why no one there is coming to her defense.

Well, that'd be one reason.

Her also-fired predecessor, a MAN, was given a special day of thanks and an opportunity to say goodbye to everyone there. This WOMAN was summarily given the steel-toed boot out the door ... no goodbyes, no cake, no hugs .... all because she allowed a few too many negative stories about Obama to be printed. Disgraceful!

I got no sympathy for any of em - given just how utterly and completely the "fifth estate" has FAILED in their moral and civic duty and instead become the propaganda engine of empire (and yes, this includes both "flavors" ) it's ridiculous to expect any sympathy for em from the people they left swingin.
