The food wasn't the problem, it's sitting in front video games all weekend long. But I can't really blame parents, have you SEEN how much it costs to participate in any school sport??? You have fees, gear, gas, special shoes they only wear for a month, extra money buying fast food.... If schools wanted to help they would organize NO COST game leagues.

BTW Whoz, you might wanna knock off making fun of fat kids. Mine has three health problems that make it impossible for her to lose weight. There are a LOT of kids that I know of that also have problems. It's pretty weak to pick on people who aren't even adult and can't help or fix themselves.

And NO, I am not gonna starve her to make anyone else happy.

My guess is that there are many many more who DON'T have such " problems " , and are obese simply because eating tasty food makes them feel better. Or so that is their belief.

And you can tell the difference HOW??? You can look at one fat kid and tell he does or doesn't have genetic health problems? If you can you're a GENIUS.
We should just push everyone as much as we can then, and say "Fuck the kids who have problems!" because I bloody damn well guarantee that they lump them all in together because I've seen it soooooooooooo many times already. My kids' teachers don't even bloody understand the WORDS I use. I print out sheets from the internet and they throw them away.

You think it don't affect US that we will never be thin and "normal" but it's indiscriminately pushed in our faces every day in every way? They don't ever say "It's ok if you really can't be thin" they reinforce over and over "even if you do have problems you should starve yourself to look like us"

They even tell people with arthritis to "Stay active"
Trust me, YOU HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT THAT MEANS. It's like saying "to stay physically healthy we recommend that you join a hard-core S&M club.
A little bondage would be GREAT for you."

These skinny ass models they use on the adverts just piss me off further, you know they've never had a single hard day in their majestic little lives!!!

It's a mind game, and I lose every damn day.........

Also, on this subject... If you can tell my 300 lb gorilla of a husband to give up Oreos, you're a better man than I.

The reason why comfort food works so well for people who are on the autism spectrum is because there are so few things that actually work to sooth a troubled mind as well as food does. You really don't think there aren't a FREAKING BOATLOAD of parents out there that aren't in the same position I'm in??? It's not JUST about chemistry and biology, it's about MENTAL HEALTH too.

Which is another damn thing you can't fix... But people can sure preach and bitch about things they know NOTHING about.

You can't TELL someone such things, they have to figure it out on their own. That's been my experience.

What is more comforting ? Chomping on those tasty oreos, and WISHING you were 20,30, 50lbs lighter, or BEING lighter ?

Light usually goes off , eventually. And the truth is, it really is NOT that hard to do. The silly ( well intentioned as they may be ) BIGGEST LOSER reality type shows stress boot camp style activities and motivation , because it makes for better t.v. ratings.

" Small moves, Ellie. Small moves. "

Took time to get that big, it'll take time to reverse that trend. Significant loss can occur w/ out doing 1 damn thing in a gym.

Speaking mainly about MOST folks, of course, but the basic rules still apply to all.

Might not end up w/ killer abs or look like those heroin chic models from the Calvin Klein ads, but one can still slim down and carry a lot less weight.

I've been with the man 15 years, and I still can't figure out what's going on in his head. Hell, neither can he. Reason gets lost in fear and doubt and anger. Not to mention, it's not like we have a manual to losing weight. The only time I've ever lost weight was on Atkins, but it was just soooooo much friggin' MEAT. I couldn't do it for long, and I hear it makes things worse if you do. Can't eat nuts or seeds and a half dozen other things. So. Just what would you like me to do about any of it, O wise one???? 'Cause I'm not seeing an answer here....

You can do what ever the hell you want, for all I frelling care.

But since ya asked...

If ya wanna lose weight, or know someone who does, consult a doctor first. Duh.

But generally speaking ?

Eat less. As in, take in fewer calories. You can figure out how many fewer w/ a few handy diet apps for your smart phone, or web sites.

Eat smarter. Know what you're eating. Read labels.

Drink water. If you don't want to destroy the planet w/ plastic bottles, filter your own tap water. Water is too boring ? Try flavoring it up w/ MiO or similar crystals. 0 - 10 calories.

Substitute. Rice cakes w/ low fat cheese instead of a bag of chips. There's ZERO calorie dressing. Use grated Parisian cheese on salads... all manner of ideas out there.

I could go on...but start now, and you can always improve on your diet as you go forward. Doing nothing only gives you more of the same.

Like Trinity said - "You've been down there, Neo. You already know that road. You know exactly where it ends. "

Doctahs. Doctors know NOTHING!!!

I'm the one that diagnoses everything in this family. I could write pages about how clueless every doc I've been to is. They know NOTHING about your habits or your chemistry, they just write out blind scripts and hope for the best.

I can't afford the battery of tests they've done on my mom for free ($300,000!) because she is low income, so I will never find out why we can't lose weight. And I'm not asking you how NORMAL people with no health
problems diet, I am saying that NO ONE can tell me what the problem is. If eatin rice cakes would do it for me, I'd do it. It don't. Hasn't ever. There is a giant WALL of problems I have with what you wrote about what I should do. It would take a year for you to fully understand what I say.
Pretending that everyone CAN lose weight is what I have a problem with. Being smug because you aren't overweight is what I have a problem with. If you are thin, it's because you got adequate DNA. We DIDN'T. I have NEVER BEEN AN OVEREATER, but I can't exercise. I would literally have to STARVE to be thin, as in not eat for weeks at a time. I did it in high school. I can't and WON'T do it again.

*sigh* What's the point. Every day I come here I'm reminded why I shouldn't bother. Most people have the medical knowledge of Kindergarteners. Useless....

So you know more than trained medical professionals but are still unable to diagnose yourself. Now you degrade other members of a site based on a now defunct t.v. show because they can not immediately diagnose you based on zero info and background?

My point (which as usual is brilliant) is that Mobama's attemp to focre kids to eat shrubbery is failing. Kids need fat and protein in their diets. The title and the picture of the fat kid was to draw attention to the story, was not meant to be an insult your daughter As for what other people think of your daughter, fuck em.

Seriously Wish, I wondered why I had such terrible acne when I was a teen- doctors said I had to stop eating fatty stuff, but later experiments I did on myself indicated conclusively that SUGAR, not fat was the main culprit. And not just acne, sugar fuels fat weight gain, and diabetes. It's a tasty poison that in small amounts can be enjoyed & metabolised, but it's ubiquitous in foods today.

And THIS is what I run into *facepalm*. Sugar is FINE for some people and NOT for others. Meat if FINE for some people and not for others. Fruit is Fine for some people and not for others. NUTS are FINE for some people and NOT for others. You seeing a pattern here??? There IS NO ABSOLUTES.

You are sensitive to the sugar problem because your kid is diabetic. The human body is a machine. Burn more calories than you put into it, you lose weight. Don't burn more , you'll gain weight.

No Wish, my kid is diabetic because a virus infected his pancreatic cells provoking an auto-immune response, killing the T Cells - it had NOTHING to do with his sugar intake. He's Type 1. He still enjoys small bits of sugar in his deserts with the appropriate insulin. I am on no personalized 'mission' here.

What caused it is immaterial. You live with the actuality NOW.

And I've met at least a dozen people that both of your theories hold no water for. Some peoples bodies are programmed to get to a certain size and some hold onto fat with an iron grip, despite no difference in diet.
GENES regulate these things! You don't want to acknowledge it because you don't want to "give people an excuse" Picking on people for their weight is just as idiotic as picking on people for their height or hair color....

Well, yes they do. But weight is not on par with ht or eye color. Sorry, it just isn't. I've never seen anyone grow 4" higher & then shrink 4 or 5" on force of will or anything.

Maybe had I not gained and then lost 70+ lbs I could empathize more. But I did so I can't.

I get where Wish is coming from.

I think it has to do with the fact that our bodies do have an ideal weight "in mind" for us, which is partly genetic and partly programmed while we grow up. Most of us will circle that number tightly for the rest of our lives, and while it can be adjusted, that usually only goes one way: up. Because we evolved fighting starving conditions.

If you've been considerably overwheight for many years, the chance of going considerably lighter permanently are fairly small. Can be done, but it's very very hard for most people, to the point of making things worse or inviting eating disorders.

I think that programmed weight has been going up for many people in recent decades because we are simply moving a lot less than we used to, especially in childhood. Plus awful eating habits. Sweets used to be a treat in my 80's childhood, now they are ubiquitous for most children.

Anyway, when you're programmed to a high weight, the only thing you actually can change at that point is your health. Overweight, even obese people can be healthy. Healthier, actually, than if they tried to slim down by force of will against their natural programming.

If you have preexisting health issues, I can only imagine that fighting that battle becomes exponentially harder.

So... yeah, making fun of fat people is pretty pointless. Not only might they honestly not be able to lose significant weight, they might actually BE healthier than you.

It's idiotic to vilify fatness when the actual weight is only an aspect of the risk factors. You can be fat and walking and exercising and not smoking/drinking and you probably will be tons healthier than the skinny person who never moves, except to get that next pack of smokes or the next bottle of beer.

If you're fat and unhealthy, the mere fat is likely the least of the problem.

Okay, THIS is probably the single best comment on this thread.

Bottom line: if you're 'big' and meant to be that way, that's cool. If you have weight you'd like to lose, there's only THREE ways: Eat less (especially sugar), exercise, or a combo of the two. There are no magic spells, and most of us can't afford to have a doctor remove bits of intestine or stomach.

And it's true, or was for me , that 1 point in time, a comment or " event " can wake a person up and be the tipping point.

And losing that much weight makes a world of difference. Mentally, physically, it's freaking amazing.

How long were you carrying that extra 70 lbs.? You said "gained and lost", so I'm guessing it wasn't a case of always having it, but a relatively temporary state, as in within less a couple of years, losing and gaining? Or did you radically change the body you had always had, so to speak?

It prolly took 12+ yrs , of gain some- lose a bit - gain some more for me to amass that much... mass. There was a short time, 18 months, where I did jump up a fair bit, towards the time of max density.

So... at some point you stopped denying that you needed to address the issue. Good for you!
Now when will that point come for you with climate change-?

I agree with AgentRouka: Prioritize health, not weight.

Doctors: decent ones are a vanishing breed.
My experience in the last decade places them in the red zone, the Bad Guy side.
A chronically ill patient makes money for them!
