Inside the Very Big, Very Controversial Business of Dog Cloning

www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/08/dog-cloning-animal-sooam-hwang

Barbra Streisand is not alone. At a South Korean laboratory, a once-disgraced doctor is replicating hundreds of deceased pets for the rich and famous. It’s made for more than a few questions of bioethics.
. . .

Hwang Woo-suk once dreamed of being the first scientist to clone a human embryo. He wanted it so much, in fact, that he tried to con the world into believing he had done it. Now, given the restrictions placed on his research, he’s unlikely to ever get a crack at creating the first human clone, even if he wanted to. So he bio-engineers pigs and cows to study disease, tinkers with resurrecting the woolly mammoth, and runs his lucrative cloning empire, delivering puppy #1109, and beyond. There will always, it seems, be another grief-stricken customer, desperate to replace a lost companion: another Barbra Streisand, visiting the grave of her beloved Sammie, with Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett perched next to her in their stroller—two identical puffs of white fur, gazing at the tombstone of the dog they are.

The Nastiest Feud in Science

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/09/dinosaur-extinction-debat
e/565769
/

A Princeton geologist has endured decades of ridicule for arguing that the fifth extinction was caused not by an asteroid but by a series of colossal volcanic eruptions.

This dispute illuminates the messy way that science progresses, and how this idealized process, ostensibly guided by objective reason and the search for truth, is shaped by ego, power, and politics. That the dinosaur wars drew in scientists from multiple disciplines only added to the bad blood. Paleontologists resented arriviste physicists, like Alvarez, for ignoring their data; physicists figured the stamp collectors were just bitter because they hadn’t cracked the mystery themselves.

Though geologists had bickered for 60 years before reaching a consensus on continental drift, Alvarez declared the extinction debate over and done within two years. “That the asteroid hit, and that the impact triggered the extinction of much of the life of the sea … are no longer debatable points,” he said in a 1982 lecture. Science reporters cheered having a story that united dinosaurs and extraterrestrials and Cold War fever dreams—it needed only “some sex and the involvement of the Royal Family and the whole world would be paying attention,” one journalist wrote.

Geologist Gerta Keller didn’t buy any of it. “It’s like a fairy tale: ‘Big rock from sky hits the dinosaurs, and boom they go.’ And it has all the aspects of a really nice story,” she said. “It’s just not true.”

Understanding the cause of the mass extinction is not an esoteric academic endeavor. Dinosaurs are what paleontologists call “charismatic megafauna”: sexy, sympathetic beasts whose obliteration transfixes pretty much anyone with a pulse. The nature of their downfall, after 135 million years of good living, might offer clues for how we can prevent, or at least delay, our own end. “Without meaning to sound pessimistic,” the geophysicist Vincent Courtillot writes in his book Evolutionary Catastrophes, “I believe the ancient catastrophes whose traces geologists are now exhuming are worthy of our attention, not just for the sake of our culture or our understanding of the zigzaggy path that led to the emergence of our own species, but quite practically to understand how to keep from becoming extinct ourselves.”

An earthquake prediction that ACTUALLY seems to be coming true!

I've seen a few articles on Zerohedge lately about a very noticeable increase in earthquakes lately, both large and small, as well as a worrying increase in magma movement under the Yellowstone Caldera. Here is the latest

Earth's Rotation Is Mysteriously Slowing Down: Experts Predict Uptick In 2018 Earthquakes
Nov 2017

Scientists have found strong evidence that 2018 will see a big uptick in the number of large earthquakes globally. Earth's rotation, as with many things, is cyclical, slowing down by a few milliseconds per day then speeding up again.

You and I will never notice this very slight variation in the rotational speed of Earth. However, we will certainly notice the result, an increase in the number of severe earthquakes.

Geophysicists are able to measure the rotational speed of Earth extremely precisely, calculating slight variations on the order of milliseconds. Now, scientists believe a slowdown of the Earth's rotation is the link to an observed cyclical increase in earthquakes.

To start, the research team of geologists analyzed every earthquake to occur since 1900 at a magnitude above 7.0. They were looking for trends in the occurrence of large earthquakes. What they found is that roughly every 32 years there was an uptick in the number of significant earthquakes worldwide.

The team was puzzled as to the root cause of this cyclicity in earthquake rate. They compared it with a number of global historical datasets and found only one that showed a strong correlation with the uptick in earthquakes. That correlation was to the slowing down of Earth's rotation. Specifically, the team noted that around every 25-30 years Earth's rotation began to slow down and that slowdown happened just before the uptick in earthquakes. The slowing rotation historically has lasted for 5 years, with the last year triggering an increase in earthquakes.

To add an interesting twist to the story, 2017 was the 4th consecutive year that Earth's rotation has slowed. This is why the research team believes we can expect more earthquakes in 2018, it is the last of a 5-year slowdown in Earth's rotation.
MORE FROM FORBES

What Is Causing Earth's Rotation To Slow Down?

As with many new findings in science, this story began with the data that supports the cyclical slowdown then speed up of Earth's rotation. The research team is then tasked with the "why" to explain this phenomenon. While scientists aren't exactly sure the mechanisms that produce this variation, there are a few hypotheses.

One hypothesis involves Earth's outer core, a liquid metal layer of the planet that circulates underneath the solid lower mantle. The thought is that the outer core can at times "stick" to the mantle, causing a disruption in its flow. This would alter Earth's magnetic field and produce a temporary hiccup in Earth's rotation.

Currently, the data only notes a striking correlation, but no causation. Hence, scientists are still unsure whether this change in Earth's rotation is the cause of an uptick in earthquakes.

While there's no direct link between the two, the trend over the past century suggests that 2018 will be an unusually active year for earthquakes. Typically, there will be 15-20 large earthquakes (M 7.0 or greater). However, during the noted uptick in earthquakes aligning to the 5th year of Earth's rotation slowdown there are on average 25-30 large earthquakes.

Earthquakes remain the most difficult natural disaster to predict. They tend to occur with little to no forewarning and can thus be incredibly destructive. Often times, geologists are limited to historical trends in data to predict the likelihood an earthquake will occur. This new research provides another dataset to inform communities about the near-term risks they face.

Wasn't this topic discussed here before?

IIRC Earth's Crust is about 20 miles thick on average, and liquid is under. On scale, the crust is thinner than an eggshell. A little surprising there are not more earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Not really related, but comparing the greatest highs and lows above and below Sea Level, Earth's surface is smoother than a billiard Cue Ball.

Well, earthquakes and volcanoes are not a surprise. It's just that the periodicity is, at least to me.

Just imagine the implication for earthquake insurance. Hell, if I would have known about it, I might have avoided paying for 15 years of insurance, and just picked up a policy this year!

When I moved out of LA in 1987, there was quite a burst of earthquakes then. Hmmmm, how many years ago was that?

I had to look that up: that was the Whittier Narrows quake. I was about an 1/8 mile from the epicenter in my pickup on my employer's parking lot. Late for work. Again. The truck literally bounced off the pavement; it was quite a ride! And it was 31 years ago. Hmmm....

So, you were in LA?

What ever made you leave???

It wasn't one quake. I think they were counting 4.0 and above. It was something like 3 or 4 times the number of prior years. There was a Northridge or Sherman Oaks quake, there was one where the freeways collapsed maybe in Oakland, some others with damage.

Of all the quakes I was in, I was only aware of 2 in the moment. One was in my car, which was a soft suspension sports car, stopped in traffic in Tustin, and I didn't understand why the traffic lights (on poles) were shaking, swaying, jittering.
The other was a Sunday morning, on the verge of waking in bed, that netherworld between sleep and awake. That was the first time I truly understood "I felt the earth move" and realized it was the same weightless sensation as follows an orgasm. I was wondering which babe was waking me with an orgasm this time, but I was alone.

Lived and worked at El Toro, then lived in Orange, Tustin, Torrance, Inglewood/Hawthorne and worked Mission Viejo, Irvine, LAX, and I think Carson City?
When I visit CA in recent years I make a beeline for BeefBowl and Round Table Pizza. Oklahoma ruined my memories of Carl's Jr. And Naugles is gone, Del Taco is different.

Oh, I remember all of the "big ones" in/near LA

Whittier 1987
As mentioned, was in my pickup about 1/8 mi away from the epicenter, just getting to work, the left front-right rear tires were literally bouncing 6" or so off the asphalt. When I realized there was nothing I could do to keep the truck from bouncing into other parked cars ... OTOH there was nothing going to happen to me unless the earth literally swallowed me up ... it was kinda fun. OTOH when I missed my AM coffee, I had the worst caffeine w/drawal headache in the world. I remember standing in the parking lot with my friends and co-workers while the pavement shuddered, twitched, and jolted like a horse's skin when it's trying to get rid of flies. I was driving during the major aftershock, I felt my car bucking and (seemed like) stalling .... I thought I had a fuel filter blockage but my RPMs were fine and it cleared up after 30 seconds or so, so I shrugged my shoulders but when I got to work realized that it had been an earthquake.

Loma Prieta (San Fran) 1989
This didn't really affect us except on TV. The sight of the collapsed freeways, tho with smoke pouring out from between the layers of concrete, knowing there had been people in there when the overpass fell ... well. It made me extremely conscious every time I was under an overpass or bridge.

Landers 1992
This was far enough away that we only got the "big" waves, so for us ... at 6 ayem ... it was a big roller. At the time we lives pretty close to the high-tension lines that carry power north from the Haynes and AES generating stations in Long Beach, and THAT earthquake just happened to hit the right frequency to get those high-tension lines to swinging ... like getting a swing to swing really high by pushing just at the right time. What I recall was that, aside from swinging heavily from side-to-side, we were hearing a LOUD humming/buzzing and seeing a bright flash of electrical arcing when the lines approached each other.

Northridge 1994
Now THAT earthquake was scary! Also in the AM dark, of all the earthquakes I thought for sure that was was going to bring down our (two story) townhouse. Earthquakes all seem to have their own "personality" ... some are slow rollers, some are single jolts ... it all depends on which frequencies/motions are hitting with what strength and for how long. With THIS quake it was like we were getting hit with every frequency all at once ... at the same time that our bed was swinging back and forth and jumping up and down it was also vibrating heavily and doing circles, and it went on and on and on ... if it had gone on much longer I thought the building was going to pull itself apart for sure.

Anyway, it's been a long time since any of that ...

No problem. I just found another website that had it. If you go to "images.google.com", just click the camera icon at the end of the search bar and dump the URL in there. It will find you a ton of identical and/or very close matches to whatever photo you put in there.

It actually used to be an even more powerful tool than it is, but they were forced to dumb it down after a recent lawsuit by Getty Images, a large stock photography company. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/02/internet-rages-after-google-re
moves-view-image-button-bowing-to-getty

You can actually still do pretty much what you always could with it, but it's not as convenient as it used to be. I do admit, it's kind of a pain now compared to how it was before, but I laugh when I read a title like that about how the "internet rages". Seems our collective need for instant gratification is getting so out of hand these days that we "rage" when the company that's bigger than God gets put in its place by the government for one of it's monopolistic practices.

It should have been a day of celebration, but iz needz muh catz memez now!
