... two of the predatory insects were discovered last fall in the northwest corner of Washington State, a few miles north of his property — the first sightings in the United States.

Scientists have since embarked on a full-scale hunt for the hornets, worried that the invaders could decimate bee populations in the United States and establish such a deep presence that all hope for eradication could be lost.

“This is our window to keep it from establishing,” said Chris Looney, an entomologist at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. “If we can’t do it in the next couple of years, it probably can’t be done.”

Good thing nobody has to rely on the WHO or the CDC here.

Hopefully they have better luck.

Our ground wasps (cicada killers) are bigger. Had one fly at me last summer at least 3 inches long. Sounded like a drone.

I honestly thought this thread was going to be about 5G towers until I read the second part of it after the sigh.

Maybe we'll luck out and the 5G won't kill off the bees and will take out the hornets instead.

That looks like a baby i seen them bigger and more agressive

It was only a matter of time before one of these guys built a nest inside some airplane or ship and snuck itself in

todayifoundout.com

I seen some of these guys in Asia, the worst were Japan they are almost armor plated, you have to really swat one, these huge hornets as big as your fingers, they can go into a nest and destory all bees in a few mins, they chomp and sting their way through them like the bees are nothing.

My advice is kill them now or the North American eco system could be fucked over by them

The Japanese bees spent hundreds of years maybe thousands evolving a strategy to fight them off they dont fight them or engage, the small guys get in formation all together then en masse they grab and hug they basically grab them bear hug them, the temp rises 50 °C (122 °F) for the honey bees fighting and wrestling, but the hornet cannot survive the combination of a temperature of 46 °C (115 °F).... the giant falls over gassesed out from the heat of the wrestling fight and dies

If this insect gets established it will destroy a lot of the eco system

Fatalities from the Giant Japanese Hornet are related to anaphylactic shock or cardiac arrest. Human Deaths also happen as a result of multiple organ failure

Honestly, those things are terrifying.

I hate bugs. I hate, hate, hate, hate them.

I remember being in Michigan when I was a kid and there were flies around a lake we were at that were 10 to 20 times the size of a house fly and you could hear their loud buzzing from 15 feet away. They liked to land on you too.

I didn't let one hang around long enough to find out if they bit.

These things have body armor too? Pure nightmare fuel.

Washington state has trapped its first 'murder hornet'

Scientists have been trying to trap the invasive insects and prevent an infestation since they were first spotted in the state last year. More than two inches long, the hornets get their nickname from their propensity to attack and kill honeybees and potentially, people.

Up until now, five giant hornets had officially been sighted in the state. This is the first one found in a trap, according to a news release.

Officials announced Friday that they had identified the Asian giant hornet earlier this week from a trap collected near Birch Bay on July 14.

"This is encouraging because it means we know that the traps work," Sven Spichiger, managing entomologist for Washington's Department of Agriculture (WSDA) said in the announcement. "But it also means we have work to do."

Did you ever see how the Japanese bees take care of them?

I hear that genetically they're no different than our bees. But our bees just never learned how to do it.

Wonder how difficult it would be to integrate some Japanese bees with ours so they can get a crash course.

That 'murder hornet' nest scientists found and destroyed had nearly 200 queens. They say they got there 'just in the nick of time'

The researchers believe that there are additional nests in the region. The WDSA will continue tracking and trapping Asian giant hornets for three years to ensure the area is free from the hornets.

The nest was destroyed. But the scientists in Washington state think there are a couple of more.

All I can do is make my yard pollinator-friendly.

Must be working. When we first moved here we had bee spots all over our vehicles. Then, for decades, nothing. Seeing bee spots again past two-three years. It's very encouraging.

That's awesome, Signy!

I had a 40lb hive in my wall, so I guess my yard was friendly enough at least to honey bees. And I haven't done anything to change the basic food supply since then. So if the neighborhood is still the same I hope it's all still at least that friendly to the pollinators.

But my dream would be to make it even better.

No shortage of bees here. But I will be putting 22,000 sqft's worth of weed and feed spray down this week, so they're probably not going to like that.

They should be fine though. Got a few hillbillies on my block that probably don't even know that weed and feed is a thing, and post-Covid my city doesn't do shit to keep up anything anymore.

There will be plenty of flowering weeds left for the bees around here after my yard looks beautiful.

Give me liberty or just come shoot me in my house. I'm so over this ridiculous reality.
