I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

That was the point I was getting to under "Covid thoughts".

I noticed that the infection rate wasn't just "decreasing sharply", it's as if it had hit a wall. Run out of potential victims. It's too early to tell, but the last 4-5 data points are interesting.

If so, both the Democrats who were running around with their hair on fire about vaccine mandates, AND Republicans hoping that the Biden* administration would stumble on this issue, would BOTH be wrong.

Somehow, despite lurching from one extreme to another - LOCKDOWNS! FREEDOM! MASKS! THE VAX WILL KILL YOU!- we may have made it to some sort of resting point.

I will probably want booster shots, since I'm STILL in a vulnerable population, and I suppose others in my situation will mostly feel the same.

And we still have to look out for variants that can overcome or evade our immune response from both the vaccine AND natural infection. Evolution doesn't stand still, and there is a giant petri dish out there for nature to perform her experiments.

I hope we've all learned something, but I doubt it. SIX is still thumping his brainless "resistance", DREAMTROVE is still convinced that the vax will kill you, JO still thinks that "they" need to be vaccinated by force, SECOND still brings TRUMP! into every possible discussion, etc etc.

Anti-vaxers will still be paranoid anti-vaxers, and pro-government mandates peeps will still be for government mandates, and almost nobody will bother to look AT REALITY bc they will be far too immersed in their ideology to come up for air.

There's one thing I've learned from this, to: People can be stampeded very easily, and it's not just the goernment doing the stampeding, it's the online nutcases as well as the mendacious M$M.

Looking backwards to look forwards ...

A lot of deaths could have been prevented. We are where we are today with a huge burden of completely avoidable suffering and over 3/4 of a million deaths.

Some countries managed to have almost no deaths, and reached COVID-19 protected status even earlier than we did, with their people and their economies intact.

So are we going to take Jack's lesson? 'If we just close our eyes and minds to suffering and death we'll eventually stumble through anything'?

Or are we going to take the lesson of many successful countries? 'Early intervention works best and fastest to benefit the most people in the most ways'?

I think the data is pretty clear.
Country-wide intervention is important.
Early intervention is best, to keep a pandemic from becoming epidemic in a country.
Once an epidemic has taken hold in a country, restrictions work, but can't be maintained indefinitely.
To date, vaccinations provide superior protection against death, even when 'natural immunity' exists.

With something as infectious as SARS-Cov2, I don't know that you CAN keep it from being established and spreading, UNLESS you have tremendous border control.

Border control has to come first.

After that, I think the next fuckup that happened was the CDC ignoring that one Dr who was using a flu sentinal lab to detect the first case of Covid. And then the CDC insisting on using THEIR test kits, when many health labs were ready and waiting to run samples using their own procedures. Yanno, I understand the desirability of using standardized procedures, but when you're in "survey" mode you don't have the luxury.

After that, lockdowns and then the sourcing of as many N95s as could be produced. Apparently, USA industry is not light on its feet and the military has no expertise in filling an urgent demand. That needs to change.

Oh, BTW, I want to make clear why I'm against vaccine mandates IN THIS CASE.

It's not because I think your (or my) rights are so precious but because IT'S NOT NECESSARY.

The CURRENT vaccine does a good enough job of protecting the vaccinated, and not such a bang-up job of protecting the unvaccinated. So people who refuse the vaccine, even tho it would be medically beneficial for them to get it, are hurting mainly themselves. And, yanno, I'm not in such a hurry to protect people from themselves. It only becomes an issue if it affects my pocketbook, where large sums of tax dollars are extracted from my pocket to pay for people being stupid.

But let me flip the situation around:

Let's say there is a deadly, highly infectious disease that primarily affects the young, and the younger the child, the higher the risk. And let's say that, on-average, it kills 10% of those under 12, and leaves another 5% with permanent, life affecting heart, lung, kidney, or brain damage.

And let's say that by some quirk of the immune system, vaccines don't work on those under-12: it might provide 40% protection against developing severe disease but seems to have a high complication rate at that age. But the vaccine DOES work particularly well in the over-20, providing 95% or better protection against SPREADING the disease.

In that case, I'd have NO PROBLEM mandating vaccines for anyone who has any contact with children, even if it's being in the same grocery store with them, which would be ... well... pretty much everyone except those in nursing homes and assisted living and prisons, And I would quarantine those facilities from receiving young visitors.

So you see, my decision changes with changing circumstances, which would be expected if one is paying atttention to reality AND if one's goal is the collective good of the USA.

"Life, liberty, and the pursuitof happiness" doesn't appear in our Constitution, but it does appear in the Declaration of Independence, and I think they got the order correct:

Your right not to wear a "face diaper" doesn't trump someone else's right to life.
