Quote:

U.S. — Citizens in the most obese, unhealthy country on the face of the planet have expressed concern that new Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. might try to do a few things differently.

With seventy-five percent of the adult population now overweight or obese, government officials expressed deep reservations about doing anything differently whatsoever. Thousands of employees within Health and Human Services have even threatened to quit if the new Secretary tries to get the country to change direction in some way.

"RFK Jr. is a nut and his ideas are crazy," said FDA employee Sharon Wilmington, as she slapped a "Heart Healthy" sticker on a box of Froot Loops. "We obviously have this thing under control."

According to sources, Kennedy Jr. has proposed extreme, outlandish reforms such as reducing processed sugars in kids' foods and occasionally exercising. "It's very extreme," said current HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. "The man has obviously gone off the deep end. We must protect the beautiful, rotund children of today from this psychopath."

At publishing time, climate experts had begun to consider that the sea levels were rising because so many fat Americans were making the land sink.

Do you remember how I posted that kids who were born in the 30s and 40s, assuming they got past TB and polio and lockjaw and pneumonia and meningitis ... seemed to live longer than kids were brn in 50s and later?

And I said, well, there was no fast food. In fact, food was sometimes hard to come by. No pesticides, everything was organic. No plastics. A lot fewer than the 86,000+ industrial chemicals currently in use.

And people walked EVERYWHERE. No just hopping in a car. Fewer "labor saving devices".

Well, I read a study recently... admittedly only one ... that concluded that less sugar in thd first 1000 days of life, and that includes in utero, means lower blood pressure snd less diabetes later in life?

They came to this conclusion by looking at the health of British people born in the 40s, during wartime rationing when sugar was tightly controlled, versus the health of those born immediately after rationing and sugar consumption rose to 16 teaspoons a day.

Interesting.

Did any of those studies or reports mention cotton seed oil and other motor oils like canola oil that we've been ingesting since WWII ended?

You should see what happens to linseed oil and canola oil when you sprinkle a little iron into it and heat it up with a torch. The really sick thing is that most of the "Olive" oil on the market today will turn into plastic under those conditions too. Even if you're using olive oil you're poisoning yourself unless you're springing for top-shelf stuff.

I have bashed the French for their politics many times but one thing I do respect them for is their passion for food, its the only time you really see them protest with true anger and they go absolutely crazy if you mess with their food

Health peaked in 2015, its all downhill since then, they say the Joe Biden Kamala Harris Admin is supressing data but its now supposed to be lower than 1990s figures. The Major Deaths in the USA are Heart Disease, Home Accident Work Place Events Unintentional injuries, Cancers, War is a big one depending on the year and 'Covid' ranked up there for a while, 1864 was a terrible year for Deaths in the USA and the period 1918 to 1920s but more people died of the Spanish Flu than died on the battlefield in WW1, overall life has got better for people and mortality rates have decreased, suicide, Alzheimer's disease, Diabetes, Chronic liver disease, fentanyl, stroke, lung cancer are also big ones.

Boomers, especially in the USA were the first artificial Bubble Wrap, sit in front of color tv, eat your army food style Tv Dinner, Roll-On Deodorant, Steve Jobs Steve Wozniak sit in front of your office computer, No-Cal Ginger Ale, DNA fingerprinting, mixing chemicals of 'sauces' on your food and inside your food, artificial sweeteners, go on a long car trip to the beach or Lake and eat some flavored foods put chemicals on your skin to block the sun giving you cancer, mass vaccination, Diet Soda Generation...then experiment studies started to Leak Out the chemicals caused cancer in laboratory rats but hundreds of chemicals still allowed in US foods but the same chemicals banned in other parts of the World.
Getting shot or Homicide might be there in areas like Chicago which seems to have Death Rates comparable to some of the World's War Zones.
Gen-Z is even hit with far worse again, if parts of the world are getting healthier but the USA is getting more unhealthy then maybe RFK is not crazy to say we all need to go back.

Japan the island of 'Okinawa' you are expected to be healthy at 100

Not those studies, no.

There is conflicting information about polyunsaturated oils and the role of fats and oils in general.

But first, a little chemistry.

An oil with as many hydrogen atoms bonded to it as possible is called "saturated' bc it's saturated with hydrogen. When some hydrogens are missing, two carbon atoms use that spare bond to link with each other twice instead of once. These are called "double bonds". Oils that have one double bond are called monounsaturated, oils with more than one double bond are called polyunsaturated.
The multiplicity of names comes from names being generated by both chemists and biochemists, sorry.

The old oil-based paints relied on oils with many double bonds to react with similar molecules at the double bonds to form a cross-linked, durable and flexible film.

The reaction requires oxygen to link the double bonds together. Without oxygen, this reaction wouldn't occur. If you put a thin layer of oil in a pan and heat it up, it will sometimes form a gummy film or even a solid film, depending on the oil.

Soybean oil is used that way in the printing industry. We tested it by baking it for an hour in a small aluminum dish at 110C (a little over the boiling point of water.) and indeed it formed a durable, flexible film that could be peeled out whole.

Oils that form that kind of film are called "drying oils" (it's an old woodworking name) and generally speaking oils with three or more double bonds are very good at cross-linking (polymerizinng) and forming films. That includes tung oil (a non-edible oil) as well as soy oil and flax (linseed) oil, all of which were traditionally used to waterproof wood.

You would think, given the possible reaction of oils to make films, we should avoid polyunsaturated oils completely.

But. We REQUIRE two polyunsaturated oils in our diet as precursors to making hormones and important parts of the immune system like leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and thromboxanes. Both of those 'essential fatty acids' are polyunsaturated, that is, they both contain more than one double bond

Linoleic acid -

And alpha linolenic acid

And alpha linolenic acid meets the definition of a drying oil! So, we apparently need something in our diet that can be used for printing and paint -making. It is found in all kinds of foods, from chia seeds to blueberries to purslane (an edible green) to canola and soy oil.

Clearly, our bodies are enzymatically equipped to deal with it. Since some people promote the ketogenic diet (which necessarily requires eating a lot of fats and oils), some people promote a high complex carbohydrate diet, and some a high protein diet,, it's hard to say how much polyunsaturated oil is optimal.

All this to say, don't let the behavior of oil in a pan scare you away from polyunsaturated oils, bc you biologically need two of them. A couple of tablespoons of oil that contains both linoleic and alpha linolenic oil (organic canola oil or soy oil to avoid Roundup) is recommended. Just don't expose it to high, dry heat i.e not for deep frying or baking. And any oil that tastes bitter has been oxygenated and should be tossed

After that, you can eat nuts and seeds if you want more fats and oils in your diet, just make sure that they're fresh.

FWIW I cook with organic olive oil, canola oil, buttrr, coconut oil, or peanut oil, as the recipe dictates (in that order). Fresh, expeller pressed oils contain their own antioxidants (vitamin E, polyphenols).

******

There is one thing I can say for sure; I have never seen a study saying sugar is good for you (except in rehydration fluids). That's something everyone agrees on.

As a chemist, I try to avoid eating too many manufactured chemicals, and that includes food additives like "polysorbate 60", highly processed "natural" components like "modified corn starch", GMOs, pesticide- treated agricultural products, and leached packaging materials like the lining of of canned goods and foods heated in plastic containers. Molds are also a potent source of harmful toxins, as are "forever chemicals" found in drinking water.

There are 86,000+ industrial chemicals in use today, and usually the biggest harm comes from an entirely unlooked-at source. So AFA artificial sweeteners... I don't use them, but I wouldn't worry about them. Even their "natural" replacements like erythritol* have their own negative health effects (*blood clots).

Not that this did me a whole lotta good, since I got cancer anyway.
