ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

The number of species that we have directly effected compared to those that have died off through the natural course of evolution (of species and the planet) is negligible. Some of your other arguments may be valid, but not this one.

....Ehm... I'm going to have to disagree on that one EcGordon. Species dying off because they're out-competed by their offspring is different from the K-T boundary or the even more brutal P-T boundary.

There are definitely extinction events, distinct from regular species die-offs and very dramatic in the loss of life and diversity. Humans are considered the sixth great extinction for a reason, and we can only measure the extinction of animals we are aware of.

Chris

thanks for actually reading my deconstruction of Kathy's analysis which I was quite proud of

Frem,

hey, no one noticed when I used that boojum. Of course, a snark is a boojum, but is a boojum a snark?

Byte,

You can't disagree with ECG as ECG is your sockpuppet ;)

KPO

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

KPO
Are you being serious ?

Yeah, in a fashion...

Yes I think human beings are 'the best', I think it's to do with intelligence. If a massive asteroid were on collision course with earth and our planet life on the point of total obliteration, and then advanced, supremely noble aliens turned up to help, I think we would be the first thing they would rescue.

Would you go for the Bonobos?

As for this:
Quote:

You have to ask yourself Rue, what value is there in the beauty of nature without a special species like our own with a concept of beauty, to be able to appreciate it?

I was being a little metaphysical, but maybe not as bad as you think, here:

If a tree falls in the middle of the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
>> Yes, as scientific fact.

BUT
If a red sunset falls over woodland and no human being is around to see it, is it beautiful?
?

Quote:

KPO: That assumes that other species don't/can't appreciate beauty,

Yes - I assume that their appreciation pales in comparison with ours - as I say I think it boils down to intelligence, and we're on another level.

Heads should roll
