I can't find the article I first saw, which said that the world's most outrageously expensive cars' manufacturers are actually INCREASING production because of high demand. Some of the prices they listed were of a million dollars!

I've heard of that about the Great Depression... that luxury cars sold better then than before or after. Nice to have it verified.

Yup. He'd have done a BETTER job of saving Wall Street if he'd saved Main Street first, or at least tried.

Since we know that wealth DOESN'T "trickle down", and we know that it DOES flow ever upward, wouldn't it make sense to inject any bailout money (if you're going to do such things at all in the first place, that is) AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ECONOMY? It's going to find its way back into the pockets of the rich anyway - let it do some good on its way there!

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

DEEP-FRIED BUTTER!!!

Hungarian cooking is so much a better use of a stick of butter per serving ...

Rakott Krumpli

6 large potatoes, boiled, peeled, and sliced
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
3 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
1 cup melted butter
2 cups sour cream
2 small Hungarian sausages (kolbasz) sliced

Place about 1/3 the sliced potatoes in a buttered baking dish and sprinkle them with approximately 1/3 of the salt, pepper, and paprika. then put in half the hard-boiled eggs sliced the same way. Pour 1/3 the butter and sour cream over them and add a layer of sausages. Repeat once more, ending with a layer of potatoes. Pour the remaining butter and sour cream over the dish and sprinkle with paprika. Bake Rakott Krumpli uncovered for at least 40 minutes in a 350 degrees F. oven. Serves 4-6.

When you cut a square of it and put it on a plate, it literally oozes butter until the bottom of the plate fills up.

Here's another Hungarian artery stiffener (yanno, just n case your arteries are too soft & pliable, and they need a bit o' hard lining):

dough:
1 lb butter
1 lb flour
1 lb sour cream
1 t salt

filling:
apricot jam

Mix dough ingredients. (Unlike pie dough, there is no such thing as overmixing. There is SO much butter in these things they turn out flaky not matter how much you manhandle them). Divide up into small balls, chill, then roll out thin, top with apricot jam, seal into small half-circles and bend into crescents, and bake at 350 deg until just golden. I made these once, very good but very tedious.

BTW- If you're wondering about Rue's & my connection through Hungarian food, we know the same mad Hungarian.
