Russia plans to leave International Space Station by 2020, official says
By Suzanne Presto, CNN
May 15, 2014 -- Updated 0041 GMT (0841 HKT)

Russia said it does not plan to use the International Space Station beyond 2020, casting a shadow on U.S. plans to continue cooperation with the country and extend the life of the orbiting laboratory until at least 2024.

I wondered about this the other day. With Obama drying up co-operation between the USA and Russia, because of the Ukraine/Crimea business, I thought he'd pull out of this one, and leave the Russians stuck with the thing, see how long they can keep operating it without US money and technical support.

But it looks like they pulled out first, leaving the US to operate the station without transport to and from it.

'Course they're talking about 2020, and he's talking 2024, so A LOT could change before anything actually changes.

Personally, I'da told the Russkies to bring any Americans there home ASAP, and then pulled the plug, but, hey, that's just me.

Perhaps the Chinese will give us a lift, when they're on their way to their moon bases.

By then "Virgin" will likely have a spacecraft that can go there, by then you may not have to be a member of NASA or any other international space agency to go there. Some private corp may buy the dam thing.

Warner Bros. Entertainment would be the perfect new owner.

The ISS was accidentally destroyed by Russia in the movie Gravity (2013). But what if it was destroyed on Putin's orders to make it look accidental? Then the cascading series of disasters in the American and Chinese space programs make perfect movie sense. It was Putin's doing!

unpiloted Progress 90 resupply spacecraft successfully docked to the International Space Station’s Poisk module. After opening the Progress spacecraft's hatch, the Roscosmos cosmonauts noticed an unexpected odor and observed small droplets, prompting the crew to close the Poisk hatch to the rest of the Russian segment. Space station air scrubbers and contaminant sensors monitored the station’s atmosphere following the observation, and on Sunday, flight controllers determined air quality inside the space station was at normal levels. There are no concerns for the crew, and as of Sunday afternoon, the crew is working to open the hatch between Poisk and Progress while all other space station operations are proceeding as planned.
