You keep blaming prostitutes for this when it's the customer's choice. Why?

Quote:

I think it's moot, since I really can't see this ever being taken seriously in the political arena, at least in our lifetimes.

It has happened in several European countries, who are no worse off for it, so... why not?

Quote:

I surely could never even think that anybody will respect a prostitute. Mal enjoyed calling Inara a whore, even after hte distinction was made between a lowly whore and a Companion later in the series.

And this can't have anything to do with, say, their personal issues? Mal calling Inara a whore is about 25% about her being a Companion and 75% about HER being a Companion, considering the obstacles it places in the path of their relationship. Not to mention, Mal is not the measure of all society, now and in the future. He's one fictional character.

The fact that you can't think that anyone could respect a prostitute is pretty irrelevant. It used to be actors were disrespectable scum in the eyes of society and look how that changed.

I guess it's true we might not see eye to eye with regard to some issues, but you keep generalising your opinion as everyone's opinion, which is tiring.

In the case of Mal and Inara you are seeing a culture clash (deliberately.) There are cultures that have had the idea of the Courtisan, basically a woman employed to be a companion to a wealthy man. Such women were often highly educated and afforded a high level of respect in those cultures. It was very common in the east China and Japan for sure and maybe other places. It was even relatively common in Europe especially amongst continental royal houses.

Now if you had been an unwashed barbarian Yankie wondering the orient in the 1850's and someone told you that the pretty girl on the local chieftan's arm was paid to keep him company you would probably think "whore" because that's the culture you were raised in. Mal is that Yankie (or given the context of the show that confederate.) Firefly is an eastern-western. You get Geisha and Gunslingers, Manderins and Madam's and the culture clashes make it interesting.

I won't argue any of that except that I really can't believe that I'm hearing from anyone that any of these women are treated with respect.

Does this mean you'd sell me your daughter for a wife if I gave you 12 cows?

I'm fairly certain I never used a phrase like "...and I think most people disagree with you" as if this was in any way relevant.

And, note, you still have not answered my question.

ETA: In case you don't remember: My question is why you - not men in general, but the individual you - keep blaming prostitutes for the choices other people make.

Also, you mentioned that you disrespect prostitute because of the way they treat sex. This implies that you think there is only one right way to have sex? Other than of legal age and consenting, I mean?

That'd be an interesting direction to take this thread.

Ah, the good old days. Wish we could go back to that a bit, at the moment they're seen as semi-deities (fallible ones, makes headlines).

Women can do whatever they want. Women are superior and know everything. Everything a woman says is right.

Therefore you are absolutely right and I don't have any idea what I'm talking about. I was a fool to have ever argued you in the first place.

A thousand pardons my lady.

I'd do the pardoning thing, except I don't think you're quite sincere...

Seriously, it can't be that, oh, you just don't present much of a coherent argument, right? I must obviously be biased against your entire gender and thus the whole discussion is invalid.

Right.

This discussion is between two individuals. You and me. I'm not the one making claims about the entirety of eiher gender. That's you. If I say you aren't presenting a good argument, I say it because you aren't. Not because of some stupid radical bias. Deal with it.

Unfortunately AR, I feel the exact same way about my position. Of course you feel that your opinions aren't biased. I don't either. I see nothing wrong with my argument and I feel that your question is bullshit. You're trying to derail my topic, just as you have from the beginning. I'm not playing your game anymore.

You're obviously a prostitute trying to get some respect. Here's a hint. Get a respectable job.

An opinion is by default biased. What is not biased is my attitude toward men and women.

You pretend that I disagree with you because I think all men are bad/evil/wrong/stupid/unworthy/whatever. That's simply not true, and it's a cheap ploy to invalidate my question to keep from having to answer it.

And since the question is relevant to the subject, it's not derailing anything. I suspect you just don't have an answer.

Again, trying to undermine my words by making up some kind of excuse to consider them invalid.

Do I sit here, calling you a man who got robbed of his every last penny by a prostitute, so he has to sit here and bitterly claim that the entire male population would be so stupid?

No. Because I know it's possible to have particular opinions without having to be compensating for something.

Have some self-respect and stop acting like a whiny child.

I just don't have the energy to fight with you about this anymore. Everyone else has moved on a long time ago and I feel it's time that I do to. I see we're at a stalemate and just as illegitimate you feel my side of the argument is, I feel your side is as well. I could go through this entire 2 month long thread and pick out your inconsistancies and biases and instances where you have spoken on behalf of women and feminists, in situations where I don't believe they would agree with you, but I just don't want to. I usually like fighting with people on the real world, but for some reason this just isn't doing it for me.

It's not you, it's the topic...

LOL.. a little RWED breakup humor there.

I have no problem agreeing to disagree, so long as we can do it peacefully without name-calling.

No hard feelings?

Sure thing. No hard feelings AR.

Tell ya what.... you ever make it up round Milwaukee, I'll spring for the prostitutes. I hear if you look hard enough, they have boy whores too. Isn't that thoughtful?

LOL.... until next time, my lady.
