Sounds great for the Triple A companies right now, but it's not going to be so great when AI and existing game engines make it even easier for indie outfits to become even more competitive in an industry that is almost as bloated as Hollywood in 2024.

Well... I don't know if that thumbnail is an example of gay. A woman who actually had boobs in video games in the 2020s is like a unicorn, so good on them.

Although if that's an MMO and 90% of the players playing that character are cross-dressing men that are trying to pick up little boys...

The 2020's are weird.

I hate this timeline.

I don't think 2024 is the year you want to pull that shit.

Seriously... What are they thinking? Did everything happening in Hollywood over the last year go right past them? Half of them are never going to get work again if they get what they want.

Wow though. From that thumbnail it actually looks like they at least gave Lara boobs this time. They did a reboot on the games maybe a dozen years ago and she was completely flat chested.

I remember while reading my Psych 101 book in college they had a chapter dedicated to what the future of video games and digital graphics could mean for human psychology, and Lara Croft got an entire page. This would have been before the year 2000. Even back then with early Playstation 1 3D graphics on cathode ray TV screens without any further immersion, there were a sizable amount of men writing love letters to Lara addressed to the development studio, with some even sending gifts and proposing to her.

These days kids can just download a free to play game on their phones and walk around with female characters 100 times more detailed than Lara was.

I wonder how many of them have "fallen in love" with their video game avatars.

It ain't zero.

"New" site? Hahaha... Gamergate predates my time on YouTube which was around late 2015/early 2016.

I guess they didn't hear about people getting banned from online servers for making mods for a Spider-Man game that removed all the Gay Pride bullshit just a few summers ago.

I'm sure they knew about that and celebrated it when it happened.

They're only "noticing" a political war now because they can't just come in anymore and ruin everything without paying any consequences for it. These people will all be out of jobs soon.

a skilled music maker
Scandals that surround the music arrangers, musical score composers 'Jeremy Soule',

Elder Scrolls Skyrim in 2011 was an action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios...the Fallout guys

long story short 'Jermey Soule' started to go crazy, he accused people of sharing his music of being comparable to Hitler and the Holocaust and he himself is Jewish, he himself is accused of stealing money scamming and then hit with sexual harassment allegations.

He hated 'Piracy' and downloads so much he then only wanted to sell physical copes of his songs but his websites flopped, orders never delivered bad ratings...after people paying money and not getting their CDs, its a flop, so that idea finally crashes

then you goes on fund raising kick starter sites to fund his music, but that also flops and years later they are waiting for the music and want their money back?

ironically fans who paid for his CDs could never get them and only find the stuff they paid for on illegal download sites

People accused him of taking the cash which was thousands upon thousands in donations for making an album and fans accused him of moving the cash somewhere else into a venture with Roland Corporation they never got their CD it was a scam and cash instead moves to Virtual Sonics produced digital instrumentation for 'Roland Cloud'

finally he got hit with a bunch of # MeToo sexual harassment allegations

I don't have any love for The Witcher.

But I hope for the fans that IV has nothing to do with the show, that it's written by the same team that did the previous entries, and that it's good enough to make up for the shitty TV show they got.

I feel really bad for them, because I think their loss is a very large part of why I won when we got the Fallout TV show that we did.

We had to watch them destroy Witcher, Resident Evil and Cowboy Beebop to name a few, by the time they got around to Fallout.

Why don't they do what they did in the old days and offer different servers to play on for people who want a different experience?

What if you were that guy who's two favorite things to do combined was play Witcher 3 and do political trolling while T-bagging your fallen foe? They just fucked your day for no reason.

We already figured out very long ago in video games how to adjust the difficulty of the games and offer you different experiences through the challenge levels.

Just allow people different options for servers to join up on based off of their enjoyment of and tolerance levels for shit talking and verbal abuse while playing games.

I'm an old dude. If I ever wanted to play the Witcher 3 online, I wouldn't want my mom there slapping me around if I dropped an F Bomb. But at the same time if I had kids and my 10 year old was playing it, I don't think they'd need to be subjected to the the most vile shit that comes out of people's mouths when they're saying it into a mic from the safety of their room and the false sense of anonymity that only comes from cursing somebody out without looking them in the eyes while doing it.

Subjecting kids to this en masse is obviously unacceptable, and it would behoove everyone if the companies making these games did a better job making sure that's not happening before Big Daddy Government gets involved and ruins everything for everyone. But it doesn't mean you need to turn Witcher 3 and all online game servers into Demolition Man in the process. And I'll tell you what... Even I wouldn't choose the maximum leeway servers myself. I wouldn't want to listen to those people any more than any of you would. But the point is, that the people who do want that experience would be free to have it.

Hell... you could even do all of this without invading privacy. You don't need to do things like require a credit card to prove that you're an adult. You could just sell your hardware (PS5/XBOX/ETC) with a random parental lock code built in and turned on that should in theory only be able to be turned off by the adult who bought the system. AND MAKE SURE YOU SPEND MONEY ON A CAMPAIGN EDUCATING THE PUBLIC THAT YOU'RE DOING THIS AND EXPLAINING WHAT IT MEANS. You could also do this with the software with outfits like Steam and GoG having a random parental code turned on by default when you first download and install it on your device. But even all that is moot anyhow since you already need somebody who is an adult paying for full games and/or monthly membership fees with a credit card if you're playing any of these new games. So just make sure that the only user on the account who can change the parental control settings is the one who's paying the bill.

You could even take that a step further and allow the parents a range of severity on the controls for the kids. If there were 5 levels of tolerance for bullshit on the servers, which would in theory all have a clearly stated TOS stated saying what you can and can't get away with on that level, the parents could have more leeway when it comes to what they're comfortable exposing their children to. I'm sure we can even have a 90's teen movie level of shit talking for the kids on one server, and a completely sterile environment heavily monitored by AI for the parents who don't want to expose their kids to anything and keep them in a bubble their whole lives too.

And really, that's what the sterile government approved version would really be for. I'm sorry, but I don't think a lot of kids under 10 should even be playing most of the modern Triple A games that are coming out these days unless it was designed and marketed specifically to them, so kids this young for the most part shouldn't shouldn't even be on a Witcher 3 server in the first place so the hyper-sterile server shouldn't even exist for this game. It's all pretty great storytelling these days when the people making the games are competent and they aren't agenda driven, but I think we should probably do a better job than we're doing letting kids be kids for a while.

It's like we rush them into heavy topics and adulthood as fast as we can these days, but we also wrap them up with everything from taped on couch cushions and scrap bubble wrap from the last Amazon delivery before we let them leave the house.

It's weird man. It's like that turns everyone into big adult babies or something.

Hey Jaynez. I never asked you this before, but I was wondering if you were aware of the retro-game hacking scene at all. I don't know why I've never asked you before since you seem to appreciate both Asian culture and video games. At least I think you like games?

The hacks back in the old days were pretty stupid stuff. Just kids playing around. I remember playing my first Super Mario Bros. hack and it was something like "Super Dickieo", where Mario was replaced with a walking ball sack that got "big" when you got the mushroom, and it looked like a 2nd grader did it in MS Paint.

But recent hacks have done pretty amazing things. People have basically created entirely new games and stories from the ground up using old assets and even creating new ones of their own. They've figured out how to expand ram and use every space of unused ram they can find to small quality-of-life improvements to telling a brand new side story of an old RPG. They've even figured out how to make single player games playable by two people at the same time. Crazy stuff.

My favorite aspect of the hacking was always the translations. There were a ton of games made in Japan that never saw the light of day here. Most of them probably for good reason, but we missed out on a lot of good stuff. I've been playing a lot of them over the years pretty much since the beginning. I think the original Nintendo has something like 400 or 500 translated games now. Some of these translations are from places other than Japan too. There were some official games released in places like France that never got an English release, and people have even translated bootleg games that came from places like China, Taiwan and even Brazil. The regular Nintendo became huge in those three places especially, long after we'd moved on in America. Somebody figured out how to clone all the internal bits and they were making all sorts of illegal clone systems, and there were still companies making new games for it into the mid 2010's.

The only reason I brought it up is because of an article I just read today about a translation that was made just last year. I started playing it the other day, thinking it was going to be a pretty brainless early RPG. I wasn't wrong, but the dialogue is hilariously awful. One of the reviews I read for it before I tried it out was absolutely scathing and I thought they were joking when they said the script was written by A.I.

Then I played it and I thought it either had to be translated by A.I. or somebody is pulling a massive freakin' troll on us.

But then I found this article...

SNES RPG Light Fantasy Gets AI-Assisted English Translation

https://www.timeextension.com/news/2023/07/snes-rpg-light-fantasy-gets
-ai-assisted-english-translation

Quote:

The Super Famicom RPG Light Fantasy now has an English-language patch.

Developed by Advance Communication Company (a Japanese studio which also ported the first three Ys to the console) and published by Tonkin House, the game hit Japanese shelves in 1992, but was never localised for Western release.

It got a sequel in 1995, also for the Super Famicom. This too was never released outside of its homeland.

The new translation patch by Zarby89 was created with the aid of Deepl, Google, ChatGPT. AI apps are increasingly being used in this way to translate the large volume of text contained in Japanese RPGs.

No shit... I should have assumed somebody would be the first to do that. I'm actually surprised that it took that long, now that I think about it.

I'll tell you what... It's a good thing this is a relatively simple RPG because the dialogue is only absurdly decipherable. You're basically getting nothing but nonsense word salad thrown at you outside of the bare-bones structure of a story, and none of the dialogue between NPCs is ever helpful. Sometimes you figure something on your own and realize that one of those dialog boxes actually was helpful, but because it was written so badly you didn't realize what it meant until after the fact.

It is kind of fun playing it, especially knowing the back story. I think probably more than half the fun is just trying to figure out what the hell any of it means. This makes it a better game than it ever possibly could have been originally with its basic 1992 RPG story of the chosen one on a mission to rescue the kingdom and blah, blah, blah.

I think some people are probably going to not be on board with this, but I'm all for it. What this person and any copycats end up doing is a lot of the hard coding groundwork to rework all the dialog in a game. I've paid attention long enough to see instances where a person who could translate a game couldn't find a willing coder to help them with the coding part, and vice versa.

What this guy is doing isn't giving everybody a laughably shitty game to play. I mean, he is doing that, but what he's really doing is saying "Here. I did all the hard work for you on this game. If you want a good translation, what are you waiting for?".

I think that's pretty awesome.

Whoever decides to take that challenge up and give this game a good translation one day is still going to need to have a little more than remedial coding skills or know somebody who else who does, but the chances of that happening are going to be far greater than being lucky enough to find a really skilled coder who can pull the bits apart on your time frame as the translator. They're usually around somewhere, but everybody has a real life things to do, and pulling these old roms apart can be a nightmare sometimes. I think if more people started doing what this guy did, they'd be removing a large part of the element of luck and good timing needed to get a project going.

It's like "Here you go... I did 95% of the work translating these 10 games here. If you know somebody who can give it the translation it deserves and they've got a buddy who took a college course on C++, you could probably knock one out in a weekend".

How ever many thousand translated games are out there today, it's taken over 25 years to get to that number. If people start using AI to speed up that process, we could probably have every game that was ever made translated to every language another 25 years from now.

I remember lot of it, there were mixes of people on the streets and someone had a spare room for the young teens to hang my of us at same aracdes or shared games when young. There would be some big tough looking adults having a beer and smoking cigraeetes as they played and were claiming or hogging an arcade machine as their own. I think there are still lots of sites for 'Emulators' out there and ROM HACKING dot net, I remember the days when strange out of the way Arcade bowling hall bar sites would mix up characters from different games, you would get weird adult spacey rocker pop culture stuff in the 'Arcade' that should not be in the game. Were they drawing in these characters and adding in these sound clips. The woman would look more sexy, you would get infinite ammo and fireballs from one game appear inside a totally seperate game, ammo and bullets from one game appear in another artist entertainment property. Your gaming character would double jump, tripple jump it would defy the normal game physics and change gamer gravity or run at super speed. I don't know where these 'hacks' came but they would make an old arcade that people got bored of playing 'super fun' again. from magazines? I remember seeing an advert from NYC and one from Amsterdam, maybe they the earl coder, artist music programmer people, maybe they were chips or eletronic boards sold in the back of a computer magazine when hacking as chip, casettes, cd and floppy disc and you didn't even have a real 'internet but they found their ways into Aracade Machines around the world long before people had Xbox or Nintendo or Sony or Personal Computers. Maybe they guy who owned the bar or bowling alley was in on it allowing his machines to get 'hacked'. These days you can even go back and find a way to Download Free ROM Hacks of an 'Arcade' game that only a select few knew off but I don't know how they networked back then, maybe cassttes and cartriges and cds in the mail?

One hack was to make a game more enjoyable, they simply hacked yoshis island crying baby Mario to remove the crying baby sound and make the game more plesant. Another started to add colors to your black and white gameboy. Some hacks simply made your game 'work' better if you moved and bought a game the US game might not work as it uses 60Hz power frequency, while Europe uses 50Hz in its cartriges, Brazil and Japan mixed 2 types in their tv broadcasts and voltage so things could get really wonky if somebody had something from Asia or Latin America. Then you had slow down Rom hack or Fast Rom to speed up your game by 33% the improved frame rate would improve the gaming experience making the movements more smooth and making games more 'touchy' and responsive.

were hobbyists reading mags and then learning how to do modding on these Arcades

some of the hacking seemed to require a little eletronics circuit board experience...were these hacked Arcade boards built in a HK, Taiwan, LA, Amsterdamn sweat shop and then shipped across the world on the black market? maybe people just did it for fun, I never understood the economics of it but it seemed to be early 'Pirate Hacker' days like Phreaking or Phone-Hacking

Universal ROM?

That's cool... I don't ever recall playing any acrade machines that were hacked when I was growing up. There were some minor variances in behavior of a specific machine at one place compared to another, but it was usually difficulty settings that were changed, or a newer version of the arcade software/hardware that removed bugs. There were simply places you didn't want to play the original Super Mario Bros because the infinite lives trick was removed from them. Other places you'd notice that you didn't get an extra life at 10,000 points in a game when you got one at another place.

I learned later on that there are DIP switches that the arcade owner can change on an initial boot up or a special boot sequence later where they can adjust all sorts of things like difficulty, the amount of lives you start with, the ability to continue, etc.

But those hacks you're talking about are crazy. I've only been able to play them because of emulation. If you have a MAME collection with all the games, you've got something stupid like 100+ versions of the various official Street Fighter 2 releases that are modded to hell.

I know you won't tell me, but now I'm wondering if you hail from Brazil.

What about that AI translation though? I think that's one of the only positive applications of AI I've seen so far.

If ever there were an advertisement for Retro Gaming, this would be it.

BTW... I finished that A.I. Translated game and it was just awful.

Not even shitting on the translation itself, actually. It was just a very poorly designed early JRPG that very rightfully did not get an English translation and a US/Europe release. Slogging through the last half was like doing homework, and I had to actually look up an online guide to finish it because (probably exacerbated by the fact it was an AI translation) you were just left about a dozen times with absolutely no idea what to do next, and dreading even going outside of town to look for things because the random battles were way too frequent and just were an unfun chore to slog through after the initial novelty wore off. I never would have been able to play more than about an hour of it if I didn't have a fast forward button and save states.

I find it pretty interesting from a History standpoint though, as I do all of this bad stuff that never got an international release.

The first game I played in this vein was Final Fantasy Tactics on the original Playstation. That was a fantastic game that people still talk about 25 years later. Had games like Light Fantasy not come out in the early 90's, FFT might never have been released either.

Light Fantasy is Final Fantasy Tactics' great grand-pappy. Or more accurately, a clone or small evolution of whatever the previous game that played like this was called. I honestly don't know what would be considered the first in the Tactical RPG genre. I know that there are several on the NES that are even more basic and unplayable in 2024, so this wasn't the first. And I'd be willing to bet that the first wasn't even a console game and was made by some nerds in the US on a DOS based PC or some nerds in Europe who did it on their BBC Macro.

TL;DR... Even if I were 12 years old again with all the time in the world to play RPGs on my Super Nintendo, this game would have been a huge disappointment. It would not surprise me if it got terrible reviews in Japan and suffered very poor sales.

I never actually owned a 2600. My first console was the 5200, which I'm pretty sure my dad bought for him and my mom, since I do have memories of sitting in the living room while they played Pac-Man. I must have been only 2 or 3 years old at that point. After they both split, I don't ever remember seeing either of them play 30 seconds of a video game ever again.

I had quite a few 2600 games at one point, but we played them on the 7800 which had backward compatibility with the 2600 games. Unfortunately, my old man backed the wrong company during the great video game bubble-burst of the early-80's I wasn't even aware existed until 25 years after it happened. So we were stuck playing Atari games for years after most of our friends who never had an atari got their Nintendos.

It's interesting to see that movie tie-ins were happening nearly from the beginning. Of course they had your Star Wars movie tie-ins, and the infamous (but rather good) E.T. game, but I find stuff like Towering Inferno to be much more interesting as a historical footnote in licensing, just because it's a movie I only know exists because of the game, and it's something that I've never once heard referenced in pop culture. And the fact that Towering Inferno was actually a really good game for its time is pretty crazy too, since probably 90% or more of licensed video game titles turned out to be shovelware crap crap games that weren't even designed with the movie in mind, and maybe given a paint job to put movie characters into them after the fact.

Interesting time for games, just because there were so many companies making them and everyone was taking risks and trying to come up with the next big thing.

Though it wasn't one of the greatest 2600 games by far, one of the most memorable to me was Journey: Escape, a direct tie-in to the Journey album of the same name. Even with the shitty TIA sound chip that made mostly annoying bleeps and blips in most games, they managed to create a rendition of Don't Stop Believin'.

That TIA sound chip could have really been the death of Atari, after Jack Tramiel decided to cheap out with the 7800 and re-use that decade old technology instead of using at least the vastly superior POKEY sound chip found in the 5200 console.

So Atari, with almost zero 3rd party development, had to compete against Nintendo with a console that was barely capable of music, and only when the games were developed with the most highly skilled coders they had at the time.

This didn't stop Lucasfilm from making the largest Banger in the entire Atari home console library though. They said "Fuck that TIA chip. We're going to buy a bunch of POKEY chips and put them inside our cartridge.

Then they released Ballblazer...

And it's really a goddamned shame, because the 7800 was really so much more powerful than anybody ever knew. But by that point any of the real talent at Atari had already abandoned ship, either going to other companies or creating their own (like Activision). The coders left at Atari were mediocre and Ballblazer was the only Atari 7800 game that had a soundtrack that wasn't ear piercing garbage noise.

Not only did Lucasfilm manage to make an excellent soundtrack for the game, but to my knowledge it was the first game that utilized the ability to change up the soundtrack instantly, based on what was currently happening inside the game. Pay attention closely to how all the instruments change things up as the game is being played. And let's not forget they figured out split-screen gaming on a pseudo-3D plane and mapping two players out in relation to each other a well over a decade before Golden Eye perfected it for 4 players on the Nintendo 64.

And when you compare the Atari 7800 release of Ballblazer to the Japanese Famicom (Nintendo) release of Ballblazer that never made it to America, you can tell why it never came here when we already had the 7800 port that would have embarrassed Nintendo by every measurable aspect...

And as an aside, the Japan Famicom had an additional sound channel above the US Nintendo, and was capable of amazing music that shames the US releases. And Nintendo still churned out this crap in Japan with it.

The whole video game market could look entirely different today if Jack Tramiel was never running Atari, and he wasn't allowed to run it right into the ground like he did.
