Only if you're focusing on what you're focusing on. That report says a whole lot more than you think it says in 470+ pages.

Maybe you should broaden your sources and get to know the facts before you talk about things you don't actually know anything about. Just a suggestion.

So we have yet another John Roberts O-Care flip, James Comey " no intent " level load of insufferable garbage masquerading as " justice " ? Seems like.

17 omissions and LIES, to be brutally honest.

Oh, and let's not ignore the actual content of the report itself...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Contained within Monday's FISA report by the DOJ Inspector General is the revelation that Fusion GPS, the firm paid by the Clinton campaign to produce the Steele dossier, "was paying Steele to discuss his reporting with the media." (P. 369 and elsewhere)

One of the more damaging articles to result from these meetings was authored by Yahoo News journalist Michael Isikoff, who said in an interview that he was invited by Fusion GPS to meet a "secret source" at a Washington restaurant.

That secret source was none other than Christopher Steele, a former MI-6 Russia expert who fed the Isikoff information for a September 23, 2016 article - which would have had far greater reach and impact coming from such a widely-read media outlet vs. $100,000 in Russian-bought Facebook ads.

Isikoff's article claimed that former Trump campaign aide Carter Page "has opened up private communications with senior Russian officials - including talks about the possible lifting of economic sanctions if the Republican nominee becomes president."

This allegaton was found by special counsel Robert Mueller report to be false. Moreover, the FBI knew about it in December, 2016, when DOJ #4 Bruce Ohr told the agency as much.

"Steele told us that in September [of 2016] her and Simpson gave an "off-the-record" briefing to a small number of journalists about his reporting," reads page 165 of the FISA report, which says that Steele "acknowledged that Yahoo News was identified in one of the court filings in the foreign litigation as being present."

Put another way, Hillary Clinton paid Christopher Steele to feed information to the MSM in order to harm Donald Trump right before the 2016 election. Granted, there were intermediaries; the Clinton campaign paid law firm Perkins Coie, which paid Fusion GPS, which paid Steele. And if asked, we're guessing Clinton would claim she had no idea this happened - which, quite frankly, simply isn't plausible given the stakes.

Whatever the case - the act of Simpson paying Steele to peddle fiction to the media for the purpose of harming Trump, by itself, constitutes blatant election meddling by every standard set by the left over the past three years.

We're sure Hillary can explain that if and when she jumps into the 2020 race.

In a new interview, Attorney General Bill Barr said it’s bad when the government tries to affect “the outcome of the election.” Yes, seriously.

The interview with host Pete Williams focused on the Department of Justice’s inspector general report on the origins of the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation. Barr said a number of questionable things in the interview, including contradicting one of Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s core findings: that there was legitimate reason to investigate links between the Trump campaign and Russia. He also tried to spin the Trump team’s contacts with Russia as something that “most campaigns” do.

But the most unbelievable line came when Barr attempted to cast the FBI’s surveillance of Trump campaign staff in 2016 as “the greatest danger to our free system” — because in his mind, that constituted the government abusing its powers to influence an election. Yes, really:

"From a civil liberties standpoint, the greatest danger to our free system is that the incumbent government used the apparatus of the state, principally the law enforcement agencies and the intelligence agencies, both to spy on political opponents, but also to use them in a way that could affect the outcome of the election."

This is just not an accurate description of what happened in 2016.

There is no credible evidence that the FBI investigation was an attempt to intervene in the election, which is a conspiracy theory that doesn’t even pass the most basic smell test. The existence of the Trump-Russia investigation wasn’t officially confirmed until March 2017 — and the most prominent leak during the campaign was pro-Trump, resulting in an iconically false New York Times headline: “Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia.” Why would the FBI keep its evidence against Trump secret until after the election, if it was trying to influence the outcome?

But setting aside the falsehoods, the sheer chutzpah of Barr’s comments is staggering. Again, according to Barr, “The greatest danger to our free system is that the incumbent government use the apparatus of the state ... in a way that could affect the outcome of the election.”

What president might be doing something like that, right now, and getting impeached for it?

“The Inspector General did not find political bias or improper motivations impacting the opening of the investigation [into the Trump campaign], or the decision to use certain investigative tools during the investigation,” FBI Director Wray said.

Wray went on to acknowledge that the report wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for his bureau, adding, “The Inspector General did find a number of instances where employees either failed to follow our policies, neglected to exercise appropriate diligence, or in some other way fell short of the standard of conduct and performance that we and that I as director expect of all of our employees.”

https://twitter.com/ABC/status/1204127022156369920

Trump then attacked Wray, illustrating how Trump continues to demand complete and utter personal loyalty from administration officials. Even comments that would be anodyne in any other era, such as ones accurately interpreting the main takeaways of an IG report, are taken by Trump as a personal attack, because they don’t accord with his pre-baked narrative about “deep state” forces conspiring to take him down.

The “full investigation” Attorney General Barr promises is a separate probe currently being conducted by a hand-picked investigator, John Durham, who on Monday said that he also didn’t agree with Horowitz’s findings.

“Last month, we advised the inspector general that we do not agree with some of the report’s conclusions as to predication and how the FBI case was opened,” Durham said.

Last week, though, the Washington Post reported that Horowitz had given Durham the opportunity to back up some of the president’s more outlandish claims that the FBI had improperly spied on his campaign, which have been repeated by the attorney general. According to the Post, Durham could not provide evidence to back up this theory.

Even Fox News was able to acknowledge this reality, with Chris Wallace reporting “the headline is that they didn’t find the things that Bill Barr and Donald Trump alleged.”

Yes, the claim that the Trump campaign was SPIED ON can be debunked if you define BEING SPIED ON as having a spy - a covert agent - being inserted into your organization to surreptitiously gather information. That's how the claim gets 'debunked'.

The same way you can debunk the claim that it was WIRE-TAPPED if you define being WIRE-TAPPED very specifically as having electronic eavesdropping to live phone conversations.

It was surveilled. It was monitored. It was entrapped. It was the target of dirty tricks. It was the subject of coordinated action between international covert agencies to gather information they couldn't legally gather otherwise. It was lied about through a series of daily or nearly daily 'leaks' by 'anonymous sources' that turned out to be vastly untrue.

But it wasn't SPIED ON.

That kind of word-parsing will have its blowback when it all comes out.

Flies shit.

Meh. Whatever...

Like I said before, this hasn't changed anything. Democrats will not be able to illegally throw out somebody who was voted in because they don't like them, and that leaves them with absolutely zero to offer them for 2020 other than "we're not Trump", which was always the only thing they had to offer them.

The problem is that it's literally become a sub-set of Hollywood these days and there's just far too much money in it for the main cast. These media corporations have downsized or outright eliminated their investigative journalism and fact checking departments.

The speed of information also plays a disproportionate role with the way we get our "news" today too. If a media outlet were to take their time to fact check before they released something, then they lose out on all of the ad revenue because 10 other less scrupulous media outlets have already put it out and sucked it all up.

I know you're going to argue this point with me, but Fox News hardly gets a pass here. People like Hannity are just as guilty as the rest of them for the division in this country right now.

It's all but impossible to counter somebody's argument these days with a source because none of the Legacy Media is trustworthy or has a shred of integrity at all. I think that deep down everybody really knows it, but we've become so divided that people will only admit that the other "side" is lying and that everything that their "side" says is the absolute truth. Meanwhile, they spend a lot of their production budget making sure the normies don't ever stray from the fold and go to outside sources who actually do fact check and have integrity for their news.

So these days I've taken the tact that I'm just going to laugh it off and tell everybody to just wait and see what actually happens instead of just believing what they're told is going to happen.

It's also important to pull stuff like this out of the memory hole and shove it in their faces too. People are very resistant to the red pill, but maybe if they start getting a steady diet of having previous "facts" they were told that turned out to be lies they'll wake up without needing to swallow a horse pill. It's 10 times as important to show them when the very same sources they're quoting today are saying lies that are only believable if you have already forgotten the lies they told you yesterday.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

From that Politico story:

And in an interview this week, Manafort, who re-emerged as an informal advisor to Trump after Election Day, suggested that the ledgers were inauthentic and called their publication “a politically motivated false attack on me. My role as a paid consultant was public. There was nothing off the books, but the way that this was presented tried to make it look shady.”

Three years later, "Shady" Manafort is in a Federal Penitentiary until December 25, 2024 or a Trump pardon. At Manafort's sentencing, Trump whined that he felt "very badly", but not bad enough to pardon him.

Lindsey Graham is a neocon. Even if he himself (and other Senate Republicans) didn't participate in the free-for-all that was Ukraine, Graham is as much a product of the swamp as Joe Biden. No swamp creature wants to unmask another swamp creature: Professiona courtesy, you know.

There is no swamp, but there is a tug of war with a rope that has not two ends but 50 ends, one for each state of the union. That is how the Founding Fathers designed the system and that is why Congress turns into a stalemate whenever (and it has happened many times before) nobody has the strength or the numbers to pull 50 states in the same direction.

Imagine 50 puppies, rather than 3, all tugging on the same toy. That is the Congressional tug of war:

Trump is USING that Politico article. It’s ironic that Trump, who has done nothing but bash the news media ever since he decided to run for president, has settled on an allegation made in a Politico article two years ago as a defense for his treatment of Ukraine.

The Politico article said some Ukrainian officials were so concerned about Trump’s close ties to Russia, which invaded their country in 2014, that they sought ways to help Hillary Clinton to win the 2016 election. What did they do? The sitting ambassador from Ukraine wrote an op-ed blasting Donald Trump during the election season. Wow! That is the same as doing nothing.

Nothing the Ukrainians did came close to the state-run disinformation campaign personally directed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to help put Trump in the White House.

Richard Blumenthal, Ron Wyden, Tom Udall Unveil Bill To Reform FISA Court

WASHINGTON — A group of Democratic senators introduced legislation Thursday to reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court amid revelations that it secretly authorizes widespread surveillance of Americans.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Tom Udall (D-N.M.), all vocal critics of the National Security Agency’s dragnet data collection, announced two new bills that would change the FISA court to a more adversarial system and appoint a special advocate to protect privacy and individual rights. Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Capitol Hill, the three Democrats slammed the court for its lack of transparency and oversight; they also emphasized a growing desire among lawmakers to respond as more information comes out on the federal government’s surveillance methods.

“When this dramatic change occurred, a change that I think will be regarded as significant in our country’s constitutional history, there was nobody there to offer the other side,” Wyden said, referring to the court’s controversial interpretation of the Patriot Act Section 215 and FISA Court Amendments Act Section 702, under which the NSA programs are lawful.

“I know of no other court in America that is so one-sided,” he added. “For example, you hear often, ‘you can appeal’ … How do you appeal something that is secret?”

The bill is co-sponsored by Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), and Ed Markey (D-Mass.).

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is preparing similar legislation in the House to appoint a special privacy advocate. The California Democrat has suggested several measures to make the court more transparent and curtail the scale of the NSA’s surveillance.

It was hilarious listening to the republicans today scream about FISA warrants being abused. Republicans that did nothing to help Democrats' in 2013 as they tried and failed to get the needed legislation to add protections passed. Very funny indeed.

"Why the hell did Democrats just extend the Patriot Act?

House leadership included the measure in a government funding bill—and even members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus went along with it.
By SAM ADLER-BELL
November 20, 2019

It may seem to many Americans that Washington is entirely consumed by the impeachment inquiry, and that no other important business is getting done on Capitol Hill. But on Tuesday, in a break from televised hearings, the House of Representatives voted to fund the government through December 20. If passed by the Senate, the continuing resolution would prevent a government shutdown and forestall a debate about border-wall funding.

That’s all well and good, except that Democratic leaders had slipped something else into the bill: a three-month extension of the Patriot Act, the post-9/11 law that gave the federal government sweeping surveillance and search powers and circumvented traditional law-enforcement rules. Key provisions of the Patriot Act were set to expire on December 15, including Section 215, the legal underpinning of the call detail records program exposed in the very first Edward Snowden leak.

“It’s surreal,” Representative Justin Amash told me on Tuesday, just before the vote. Amash, an independent who left the Republican Party over his opposition to President Trump, pointed to the hypocrisy on both sides of the aisle. Republicans have “decried FISA abuse” against the president and his aides, he said, referring to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, “and Democrats have highlighted Trump’s abuse of his executive powers, yet they’re teaming up to extend the administration’s authority to warrantlessly gather data on Americans.”

By tucking the measure into a must-pass bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced many members who oppose the Patriot Act to vote in favor of its extension. “Although I do have serious concerns with reauthorizing Section 215,” Representative Bobby Rush of Illinois told The Hill, “we must focus on the bigger picture here.” In late October, Rush signed a letter co-authored by Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Earl Blumenauer, which read, “We will not support any legislation that extends Section 215’s sunset date if it fails to contain robust reforms that protect innocent people from unjust surveillance.”

On Monday night, Amash submitted an amendment to strip the Patriot Act language from the budget bill, but the amendment was blocked by Democrats on the Rules Committee.

Just 10 Democrats defied the leadership to vote against the resolution, including Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar (a.k.a. “the Squad”). “I cannot in good conscience vote in favor of a [continuing resolution] that reauthorizes unconstitutional mass surveillance authorities,” Tlaib told me, “especially under a president who has retweeted images of his opponents jailed and suggests anyone who disagrees with him is a criminal.” AOC tweeted before the vote, “Yeah that’s gonna be a no from me dog.”

Ultimately, the funding bill passed 231-192, mostly on party lines.

Some advocates have questioned whether the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), which includes the Squad, should have done more to combat—or, at least, register its dissatisfaction with—the last-minute maneuver by Democratic leadership. On Wednesday morning, leaders of the CPC and the libertarian House Freedom Caucus circulated a joint letter on Capitol Hill calling for extensive reforms to the Patriot Act before it is reauthorized. But when it came time for the floor vote, CPC co-chairs Pramila Jayapal and Mark Pocan voted in favor of the funding measure. So did most of the caucus’s members. The only person in CPC leadership to vote against the bill was Omar.

“We needed a show of resolve from House progressives to underscore that protections for civil liberties are vital,” said Norman Solomon, the co-founder of digital activist group RootsAction.org. “Instead we got a cave-in from CPC leadership along with all but 10 Democrats.”

“There’s no other way to spin this,” a progressive staffer on the Hill told me. “This was a major capitulation. The progressive caucus has touted itself as an organization that can wield power and leverage the votes of its 90 members. And they didn’t lift a finger. Democratic leadership rammed this down their throats.”

Repealing the call records program had been considered relatively low-hanging fruit by reform advocates—not least because it’s no longer operational. The National Security Agency announced a year ago that it had shut down the program after a series of compliance mishaps (during which many millions of innocent Americans’ phone records were accidentally collected). Lawmakers in both parties have expressed bewilderment about why they should reauthorize a program the NSA doesn’t use.

But in recent hearings, Trump administration officials have argued that the government should retain the authority in case it needs it later. In early November, an NSA official told the Senate Judiciary Committee the agency feared losing a “tool in our toolbox” that could prove “valuable moving forward.”

Thanks to House Democrats, those fears are allayed for the moment.

The late-game maneuver irked some advocacy groups, which have argued that Democrats’ broader complaints about the Trump administration—its white nationalist advisers, hostility to immigrants, disregard for the Constitution, and disdain for the press—should compel them to prioritize surveillance reform, too.

“Democrats are actively arguing that Donald Trump is unfit for office,” said Sandy Fulton of Free Press. “They’ve repeatedly acknowledged that he’s a threat to our most vulnerable communities. And yet they’re going to give him the Patriot Act?” Democratic leaders want to isolate the debate about intelligence from the debate about Trump’s fitness for office, Fulton explained. “They want to have these two conversations separately. But that doesn’t make sense. They should be the same conversation.”

A CPC spokesperson defended its members’ support of the continuing resolution. While acknowledging the caucus would have “preferred a clean CR without the 215 extension,” she said, “the top priority for the Progressive Caucus is to ensure major surveillance reform is included in any ultimate reauthorization.” The extension will help this goal, she argued: “Without a short extension that allows us to obtain these major reforms, we would end up in a much worse position.”

Jayapal, the CPC co-chair, denied that this was a situation of Democratic leadership bearing down on progressives. “That happens pretty often,” she said, laughing. “So I actually know what that feels like. This wasn’t one of them.”

According to Jayapal, negotiations between members of the Judiciary Committee and the NSA-friendly House Permanent Subcommittee on Intelligence (HPSCI) were going well. “Almost every single thing in our letter has been addressed, but not quite to our level of satisfaction,” Jayapal said. “We’re still pushing really hard, and we need this extra time to be able to finish that.” Without HPSCI’s buy-in, she said, “there’s no point in marking up a bill … because that is often where we run into problems.”

But some advocates say the best way to get buy-in from the intelligence committee is a show of strength. It would only have taken a few dozen progressive defections to kill the continuing resolution, after which the leadership would have been forced to strip the Patriot Act from the bill and schedule another vote on funding the government. “Self-identified progressives should have thrown a monkey wrench into the Orwellian machinery,” said Solomon. “Putting up a fight now would have opened up possibilities for rolling back key aspects of the surveillance state.”

Jayapal disagreed. If the House had not passed the extension, she said, the GOP-led Senate would have sent over a clean reauthorization bill (with no reforms), and she worries moderate Democrats might have gone along with it—especially if faced with the alternative of allowing the provisions to expire altogether. “You could go through and name any strategy for me, and I would tell you why it would fail,” she said.

As for allowing the Patriot Act to sunset, Jayapal told me, “There was no scenario in which this thing was going to expire.” Eighteen years after 9/11, raising the specter of “the next attack” still has political potency. “We already heard that from the Senate,” Jayapal said.

These views represent competing visions for how progressives should wield power in Congress. Jayapal’s pragmatic streak has often contrasted with the more openly confrontational approach of Ocasio-Cortez or Tlaib. While members of the Squad have seemed to relish fights with top Democrats, Jayapal has advocated for sticking to principles, while finding ways to work collaboratively with leadership.

“In my ideal world, we wouldn’t have the Patriot Act. Period,” Jayapal said, “but that’s not where we are. So we’ve got to fix these things, and they need to be substantive, real changes. That’s what we’re working on.”

I'm an equal opportunity critic when it comes to our politicians. Politicians have had to kiss alot of butts and make a lot of promises ... and raise a lot of money... by the time they get to Congress. Hardly a promising beginning for creating an honest Congress.

And then, having achieved some sort of pinnacle of power, it becomes awfully easy to bend the rules to meet your "needs" and eventually toss the rule book out altogether.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats have a lock on honesty, OR corruption. All that time in office often means that they have made some pretty comfortably feathered nests over the years, no matter which party they belong to.

"One large portion of the dossier is crystal clear, certain, consistent, and corroborated. Russia’s goal all along has been to do damage to America and our leadership role in the world. Also, the methods described in the report fit the Russians to a tee. If the remainder of the report is largely true, Russia has a powerful weapon to help achieve its goal. Even if it is largely false, the Kremlin still benefits from the confusion, uncertainty and political churn created by the resulting fallout. In any regard, the administration could help cauterize the damage by being honest, transparent and assisting those looking into the matter. Sadly, the president has done the opposite, ensuring a Russian win no matter what. In any event, I would suspect the Russians will look to muddy the waters and spread false and misleading information to confuse investigators and public officials.

As things stand, both investigators and voters will have to examine the information in their possession and make sense of it as best they can. Professional investigators can marry the report with human and signals intelligence, they can look at call records, travel records, interview people mentioned in the report, solicit assistance from friendly foreign police and intelligence services, subpoena records and tie it to subsequent events that can shed light on the various details. We, on the other hand, will have to do our best to validate the information at hand. Looking at new information through the framework outlined in the Steele document is not a bad place to start."

I love how Trumpers try and protect their lord by crying "Trump was spied on!" as opposed to the more accurate, "he had so much Russian stink on him it would have been a dereliction of duty not to investigate him." It's called the Federal Bureau of Investigationafter all.

I would expect nothing else from a chronic sufferer of the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect to apply the same faulty logic to a falsified report that says stuff that he just happens to want it to say that he does to the media in general.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Every step closer to the cliff ....

There was a speech given by a Mexican President many years ago

"Last year, we stood on the edge of a precipice. This year, we have taken a giant step forward" That phrase comes unbidden to mind when I think about this impeachment. It probably won't be as disasterous for the Dems as it was for the Repubs when they impeached Bill Clinton, but it will certainly lead to losses.

Also, the timing is screwy. Assuming that the Senate votes this down either slowly, with much testimony (my preferred route, but unlikely) or in one day, this leaves Trump the entire 2020 campaign season to respond.

Now, I'm sure that the Dems, the deep state, and their ever-cooperative M$M will dream up ever-more outlandish fake scandals to dog Trump with from now until 2024, but most people have gotten wise to what they're doing, and bored of it by now. It's a strategy that's going to fail.

The funny thing is, there's a lot to criticize Trump about. I don't mean irrelevant shit like extramarital sex or the color of his skin, I mean REAL stuff like the Federal deficit, the trade deficit, our continuing military engagement abroad, and his inability to jumpstart manufacturing. If the Dems focused on THAT, they'd be further ahead.

So, they screwed up all of them.

If "Russia" was the problem, then "Russia" should have been investigated, which would have properly involved only the CIA and NSA. But THIS "investigation" was framed around "collusion" with Russia, and the FIB investigated the TRUMP CAMPAIGN, based on a bogus document. Investigating "Russia" and investigating the Trump campaign are two entirely separate things involving entirely separate agencies, which you're conflating to justify one with the other.

And to reiterate my previous point, even after all those

You're all hot to have had Trump "investigated" even while he was campaigning, based on phony documents, but should the same thing happen to Biden on the basis of actual evidence, you make a Federal case about it. Literally.

Seems very much like an attempt to subvert democracy - on your part. Between you and the other slavering TDSers, in cooperation with the deep state and the M$M you're doing more damage to our democracy than Russia could ever do.
