NY allows Bloomberg new mayor bid

The city council in New York has voted to extend the limits on officials' terms of office, allowing Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for re-election.

Mr Bloomberg was due to stand down after his second term in office, which under current rules would be his last, at the end of next year.

The billionaire businessman had asked for the law to be overturned.

He said the financial crisis on Wall Street and his record as mayor meant he deserved the chance to re-run.

The 51-member city council supported the change by 29 votes to 22.

Twice during the 1990s, voters voiced their support for limiting city politicians to a maximum of eight years in office.

But the BBC's Matthew Wells in New York says many on the council were also approaching the end of their second four-year terms and the mayor was favoured to get his way.

Now the two-thirds of council members who have had to step down at the November 2009 elections will be able to stand for re-election.

Mr Bloomberg earlier denied that backroom deals had been made, and said the economic downturn was the main factor.

So screw what the voters want. We politicians know what's best for them.

I'd hope that the lawsuits against this travesty are already being put together.

I don't agree with him asking the law to be overturned, but technically, the voters aren't getting screwed. They can still vote him out in the next election if they want to.

that is a good point.

I was offended by the idea that the council would overturn something the people voted on,

but if the people aren't offended and they want Bloomberg, they will vote him back in, if they are, then he's toast. Or, I'd assume.

The whole point of term limits is to negate the enormous advantage of incumbency. Without term limits 90%+ politicians would be in for life.

possibly good point Kirk. Do they even have primaries when the incumbant is seeking reelection?

at least bloomberg is an independant, so he won't totally stifle a primary process in either major party.

I think it's a dimbulb idea myself.

Between gerrymandering and certain incumbent advantages, sometimes this is the ONLY way to be fully rid of a scumbag like Engler or Shaeffer.

It's a stumbling block that I grudgingly accept the difficulties of - bear in mind that I say this as my dear darling Jenny Granholm gets sent packing by it, which kinda breaks my heart a little, but the advantages far, far outweigh the flaws.

This is the same beef I have with Chavez and his expansions of executive power, and suddenly a lot of pro-GOP folk are panickedly having an interest in all of the sudden like...

You tear down a wall like that for a good person, what if the person who comes after than ain't so good, what then, ehe ?

Take the long view, LEAVE that bar right where it is, it got put there for good reason.

Maybe that's a good point, let's examine it further.

Off the top of my head, a partial list of countries and institutions where 90% of incumbents in key positions with no term limits serve for life and never get voted out because the voters just love them so much:

- Australia
- Japan
- UK
- Germany
- France
- Portugal
- Italy
- Canada
- US Senate
- US House of Representatives
- etc etc etc
- Proved my point, bored now.
