"Fukked in the a$$ by Bank of America":

Banks charge fee to withdraw money or write checks...

Overdraft fees are 3,000% interest loans:

I had to pay $6 to cash a Bank of America check at Bank of America, because I dont have an account with BOA. That was after they got their $25-Billion Bankster Bailout from Congress.

DREAMTROVE

This one happened to me: They would withdraw money from my account, and then itemize an incoming bill. Say I buy 10 books in one order, amazon makes one charge to my card for the purchase. My bank will take any deposits made recently into my account and "remove them for review" which means that money, already credited to my account, is "withdrawn" for 24 hour review, to make sure that the institution which wrote the check, say "AT&T" is actually a valid institution. Then they took the Amazon order, and itemized it, so that it could generate 10 $25 overdraft fees.

I went into the bank HQ, and then talked to the bank president, and said essentially "You stole $250" and here's his compromise offer "How about I give you 1/2 of your money back" I took it, and then say, oh and I'll be seeing you.

But then I went online, and saw that my bank was ranked one of the most honest banks in the country. Only really seriously outranked by WaMu. So, I research Washington Mutual, and it's a cooperative, totally sound, so I call up WaMu and say I want to open an account, and begin the process. While I'm doing this, WaMu goes under.

Mattress looking good right now ;)

Nah, just kidding, the dollar would go to hell.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Ours is I guess what you'd call a "growing local bank"--its only branches are here in Marin, but it's been buying up other banks and is strong.

I've never had problem one with it. They credit my account the minute I had the check in, have cut me slack on overdraft fees (that were MY fault...not paying attention), and helped out in many ways.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't touch Bank of America or Wells Fargo with a ten-foot pole. Had a credit card with Wells Fargo when younger, and banked there. Got shit on regularly.

A few years back I got an account with another national bank, think it's called Citi now? Got screwed almost immediately, and pulled my account.

I hope WestAmerica doesn't get too big in my lifetime, or I'm afraid it will go the way of all the rest...to hell.

I don't know what the answer is, but I sure wish there was one--and that there was some kind of oversight/control of the big ones, who can do about whatever they want to screw us and get away with it. Bah!

BYTEMITE

I have an account with USAA and I don't think they've ever taken money from me, they're even willing to waive some fees, like if you withdraw money from some random ATM machine somewhere.

The only thing is, I think you have to have to be the offspring of a member of the armed forces or you have to be a member yourself to open an account. My dad was an ensign in the Navy when he was putting himself through college, so... Yeah, I'm willing to take advantage of the offer.

RUE

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

Two words: credit union.

I now do my banking through ING for the great rates, and my local credit union. BofA never saw it coming. I took my money out as a money order - whose fee they HAD to waive by policy b/c of the amount that WAS in my account ... he he he he ...

BofA
