Let's get realistic about illegal immigrants when it comes to money for just a minute. I know some complain that they get services they don't pay for, but can anyone actually calculate that number, in comparison to how many services they DON'T get compared to what America reaps because of their illegal status?

The tax system collects its due, even from a class of workers with no ability to claim a refund and no hope of drawing a Social Security check.

Illegal immigrants are paying taxes to Uncle Sam, experts agree. The latest figures available indicate it will amount to billions of dollars in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes this year. One rough estimate puts the amount of Social Security taxes alone at around $9 billion per year.

Paycheck withholding collects much of the federal tax from illegal workers, just as it does for legal workers.

Illegals pay taxes. Sales taxes when they buy stuff, and indirect property taxes when they rent. Also gas taxes if they drive. These are the major sources of local revenue.

If the illegal presents a social security number and driver's license (both stolen, not fake), they pay taxes under that person's name (but cannot receive the benefits or refunds those taxes pay for).

Quote:

I wouldn’t be surprised, if the percentage of illegals who pay taxes on the federal level is greater than the percentage of Americans who pay taxes on the federal level. Almost 30 percent of Americans, through various tax credits and exemptions and so forth, don’t pay taxes on the federal level.

So into all this, should we not contemplate the following?
Quote:

These people if allowed a fair path to legal status could be exactly what the economic doctors ordered as far as our tax base, our social security system and our economy. Immigrants are the ultimate consumers because they start over in this land, needing many things.

By putting them on the path of legality, they would freely spend, freely work and we would benefit from the taxes and other areas where their dollars could help our system. Historic economic trends have shown that immigrants actually increase the number of jobs in the nation once a wave strikes as they open business and create micro-economies in their communities which flow out to everyone.

This is pretty much why immigration is a non-issue for me. Immigration is only an issue because people are frightened. And, granted, there's lots to be frightened about, and you do have some criminals coming over, but cutting off the honest ones as well as the criminals actually hurts us.

Crime fighting is more efficient if you focus on the people actually actively committing obvious crime, and performing investigations when you can if it's less clear.

Well, "bang on!" from me, but you'll get the righties coming in to scream "being here illegally IS a crime!"

For that matter, isn't the RNC's new mailer a crime?

Seems Republicans have a very subjective view of what is and isn't a crime worthy of prosecution. If it's THEM doing it, it's not a crime; if it's someone darker-skinned than them, then OF COURSE you have to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law!
