Yeah, they've been talking about this for a bit now; it's more of the same. It stinks. This country is going the wrong way; we shouldn't be punishing children for being born here. Hopefully, at the worst, that's the only state that will do it. Hopefully, if it even passes, which (given it's Arizona) it might.

Been thinking about this for a while..

Much of the problem with illegals, is that we don't open enough slots for unskilled labor.

Granted, we have to be careful with our resources and how many people are actually here... (dont want it to become Japan-like in overcrowding)

But if we opened more oppurtunities for those without "high-value" skills, we would probably have less illegals.

Then again, we lose the "value" of not having to pay ridiculous rates for labor. (Thanks a lot government... your taxes/laws ect, make it almost impossible for the common folk to hire legal movers, mowers, ect...without paying thru the nose for it).

As to the anchor-kids... Im really on the fence. Their parents are illegal, which means they are ripping all of us off.

Uggh, what do we do with them?

I can't help but feel that the reason why there's a sense that immigrants are "ripping us off" because money is a limited resource (printed by the damn Federal government like it's infinite) is because our economy has switched to importing more than we export. if we weren't so far underwater that we can't even see the surface, maybe illegal immigration wouldn't be perceived as such a huge problem, and we wouldn't even have to think about deporting business and workers, and what to do with the children that would be left behind.

There's always been tension about immigrants, the sense that they're taking jobs, but in the past when they wanted a life here, and wanted to stay, they brought more to the table, culturally and idea-wise, than they were taking. We're a nation of immigrants, or we have been in the past.

Something's changed. People don't want to be part of our nation anymore. Why? Correct that, and you might correct the immigration issue.

That's how I see it.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

There is a real disconnect between the Cubans of my parents and grandparents' generation, and the more modern immigrants.

Used to be, you wanted the American Dream.

Now you just want to get out of the hellhole you're in.

These are different mentalities and I think they spawn different attitudes. While it harmed me in the long run by crippling my Spanish language skills, I still remember my parents' great concern when I was growing up: "He's speaking too much Spanish! From now on we speak only English in the House!"

Never mind that kids can learn two languages easy as pie. It was the idea behind the mandate. They wanted me to be an all-American boy. Embrace everything that was America. George Washington and the Cherry Tree, Hate for the Red Menace, everything.

Now people are here because they feel it's their best chance for survival, and not out of dreams of prosperity. They don't really want to be here, often enough. They feel they have to be to survive. It isn't the culmination of a decade long dream. It certainly isn't admiration for the great shining U.S. government.

You might be right, Byte, that if we made people believe in the dream again, we'd get some different attitudes in the people here. But I'm not sure we'll be worthy of that dream.

It's a cynical world, and I'm not sure people look to the Statue of Liberty with bright, shiny eyes wet with budding tears anymore.

Once that veil has been lifted, can it ever come back?

Immigration has become an escape from somewhere intolerable to a place you don't like much and doesn't like you, I fear.

Beautifully said, Anthony, and unfortunately all too true. The world is getting worse, not better. Sad it's become that way, and I don't know what we do about it, because we ARE a nation of immigrants and that shouldn't stop or we're poorer for it.

The mentality in our country has become so much "us v. them", so intensely against "the other", that it's affecting how many of us think. People blindly parrot the idea that they're "taking from us" when you're both right, they contribute just as much AND pay to be here in taxes and the benefits they never receive, as well as keeping costs down for US.

I don't have the answer, but the hatred that has been spawned is a sad thing to see in the country I love.
