Not sure this is another thread on this...apologies if there is.

Thought it was a very troubling story.

Gawd, how sickening. Not the first time, I fear, nor will it be the last. There are parts of the human psyche...

The ONLY good thing I see is that the Pentagon spoke up about it and is in the process of prosecuting. I think that might not have been true in times past, if you know what I mean.

FIRST question that comes to mind is: Why does it appear in BBC and AU news, when we've not heard a word? I hope you're just ahead of the curve, Magons, and that it's on OUR news post haste!

Ah, it's out there. CBS, HuffPost and WAPost already have it up, plus this:
Quote:

The father of a U.S. soldier serving in Afghanistan says he tried nearly a half dozen times to pass an urgent message from his son to the Army: Troops in his unit had murdered an Afghan civilian, planned more killings and threatened him to keep quiet about it.

By the time officials arrested suspects months later, two more Afghans were dead.

And much to Christopher Winfield's horror, his son Adam was among the five Fort Lewis-based soldiers charged in the killings.

The elder Winfield told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that his son did not kill the unarmed man and would never have been in the situation if the Army had investigated the warnings he says he passed along to Fort Lewis.

An Army spokeswoman at the base said she could not comment on whether they received such a tip or if so, whether it was acted on. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said Thursday he had no information about the man's claim.

"That's disheartening to hear if that is indeed the case," he said. "If someone is trying to reach out, trying to notify us, trying to head off a potential problem, that's something we need to pay attention to and heed that warning."

The new details about Winfield's efforts to alert the Army and his son's pleas raised questions about the Army's handling of the case and its system for allowing soldiers to report misconduct by their colleagues.

The soldiers have been accused of conspiracy and premeditated murder in a case marked by grisly details.

The highest-ranking is Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, who, along with Cpl. Jeremy Morlock, is accused of taking part in all three killings. Gibbs collected fingers and other body parts from Afghan corpses, slaughtered animals indiscriminately and hoarded illicitly obtained weapons he could drop near civilian bodies to make them appear to be combatants, according to charges filed by Army prosecutors and statements soldiers in the platoon made to investigators.

Doubly disconcerting, but unfortunately, also not surprising. Damn them!

Well, any soldier that deliberatly kills unarmed citizens should be prosecuted for murder. In every war there is always untargeted killings, just the way it is, however killing a citizen without provocation is plain wrong

At least they were prosecuted.

Contrast with the Israeli soldiers in this case, who were reported to kill a father and a 4 yr old in cold blood. As far as I know, they were never prosecuted.

Now these Israeli soldiers didn't sound like serial killers, but I guess one never knows.

Take the insanity of military CULTure, as touched on here...
http://www.lewrockwell.com/reed/reed167.html

And then add in the necessary dehumanization and mental brutalising, with the feeding of hate and intolerance required to get people to kill other people they don't even know for no better reason than they were told to...

And this kind of thing is INEVITABLE.

It's the very nature of war itself and the way we wage it, bad shit happens, sometimes really bad shit, and no amount of "discipline" is going to stop that, since that "discipline" is in great part the CAUSE of it.

This is why folks with any sense do not have wars, they defend themselves and leave it at that, but we've not only fallen to that jingoistic insanity on a military level, we're sliding into it wholesale on a social level via a bizarre form of imperial nationalism that's considered downright insane over most of the civilized world - for all their other cultural flaws do you know why Japanese folk see ultra-hardcore nationalists as fuckin fruitcakes ?

Cause while they hold us in the greater part responsible, it was the assholes like that and their inability to see plain reality when it was standing in front of thier face, which got two of their cities blown off the map!

And here we are, suffering from the same condition and revelling in it.

The ONLY thing noteworthy about this incident, is that it ever made the news, or was ever reported at all, period.

It's just not simpler than that.
