Which, of course, is one of the things I like to slam upside the head of people that think getting society to treat children as human beings is "impossible".

Consider how minorities and women have been treated, and how far, how fast, the acceptance of them has come ?
History will look upon the time we're in as a dark age, and say "How could they have been so blind and stupid!" - and forget that some of us were not.

We mostly see things in very short terms, and even the most patient rarely look beyond a single lifetime, but in the long view of things, following historys predictable pattern - our victory is as obvious as it is inevitable.
I just ain't very patient about it.

If history has any sense, they'll say "Look how far those people came from strict segregation by race and ethnicity, and discrimination by sex, in just 50 years." It's amazing to me that we're moving in the direction of equality at a pace pretty much unequaled in history, and folk bitch about it.

If anyone has an example of national change towards racial, ethnic, and sexual equality that's much better than the last 50 years in the U.S., especially in a nation that's as racially diverse as ours, I'd be glad to see it.

So why rest on our laurels now, Geeze ?
Why NOT take it all the way to an enlightened society ?

History *is* going to think of us as idiots, either way, in the same way we look back down on the road and say so to previous cultures, it's the nature of the business, it is.

Why not, indeed.

Abolitionists, women suffragists, civil rights activists... they all had a dream.

All's we need is a dream. A vision of what is possible.

We are.

Gay and trans-gender rights. Same sex marriage. Changing DADT. Broader understanding of the rights of our Islamic citizens than much of Europe. More concern for the rights of juveniles.

We've got the most racially and ethnically diverse population in the world, and most of us try to deal with it an an enlightened manner.

Of course there are racists among us, but they're just a noisy minority.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Moi aussi, but I'll admit we've moved pretty fast, compared to history. One could make the argument that we're a young country and came along at a time when mankind SHOULD have evolved faster as well, but that's neither here nore there.

Those ads make my skin crawl...

I'm not sure one can say we've moved all that much faster than ANY nation, but we've moved pretty fast. Consider that the attitudes toward homosexuality have changed dramatically in just a couple of generations; as have the attitudes tward women's right and, I would add, marijuana, among other things. We have a long ways to go, but those ads show just how fast we HAVE moved in some respects.

I think it's fair to give us credit, but I, too, wish we'd hurry UP.

ETA: Children's rights have moved forward, too, in many ways. That a child can sue for independence, that we make SOME effort at protecting them (poor as those efforts usually are), that child labor is outlawed, and more. It's just, as you said, not good enough fast enough!

ETA: I would also note, insofar as "the dark ages", that almost all sci fi writers speak of a time in the future when society WILL look back in horror and think of these as the dark ages. Speaks eloquently, to me.

And I can't resist a bumpersticker: "When religion ruled the world, we called it the Dark Ages".
