Proof that people under stressful conditions have a poor ability to correctly assess threats, as drones still paint targets friendly or not according to an end user input.

Of course worse options are to go completely AI or completely personnel. AI because then there's no accountability because there's no witnesses (and can be used on American citizens, no operator inhibitions anymore). Personnel because more people will die unless how the soldiers interact with the native population changes, but then we've also poisoned that well because of the stupid casualties from the stupid predator drones.

Skynet anyone?

Actually, this is human error with a remote control.

ETA: The story about the drones killing Afghan civilians (15 men, 1 woman, and 3 childre) is just tragic. I am horrified.

Yeah, I thought of posting skynet as well. I'm just in low post mode, or moving there, too much to do.

I think the stories are underestimating the death to women in children from these attacks, and I question the degree to which a human was involved in selecting remote targets and firing.

Our tendency to hit weddings is very telling. Also schools and hospitals. It shows a pattern of high density targets. We seem to have programmed in the idea that a large group of people is likely a militia or an army. Groups of women and children are probably more common than groups of men. If it is a group of men, we seem to automatically claim that they were terrorists, and not a bowling league.

I suspect that this is a robot on autopilot with limited human oversight. I wouldn't be surprised if there are 200 screens showing predator drone sites, and automatic target selection, and I'm not convinced that the system needs a human finger to pull the trigger. I figure that they probably have some human oversight so the humans can veto an attack on their own base, but didn't one happen anyway a few months ago? Maybe the boys went out for donuts.

Bad stuff.

Does sound a little like Skynet, but the worse issue is how often they miss the targets they should be hitting and hit people who have nothing to do with fighting. That's the problem with autimated war, it takes the humanity out of it and makes it so people are more callous since they dont' see it and more mistakes can be made, even though they say it reduces mistakes.

That is bad, but there's something I have a problem with here. Targets they should be hitting? We should be bombing someone?

Afghan militias defend Afghanistan because someone invaded it. If someone invaded here, you might find something like that happening. Actually, someone is invading, and there was just an incident. I would hope that the US govt. did not respond by sending in predator drones.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

As I heard an anti-terrorism consultant put it, "If there are 34 people at a wedding with one Al Qaeda suspect present, then 35 people are going to die that day."

The rationale coming from the U.S. seems to be that if you're in the vicinity of someone they don't like, your life is forfeit. Of course, that same rationale tells us that terrorists are the personification of evil for espousing the same kinds of beliefs.

I got no problem w/ the message getting out , that if you hang around w/ al Qaeda, you're risking your life. It's to the point, and shows we mean business.

I agree with you. Hussein Obama Soetoro has been a member of AllCIAduh since jew Brezenski created it for Prez Carter in 1980, and hired AllCIAduh to attack Libya in 2011. Bye bye White House...just like the loving British Empire did in the War of 1812.

If Terminator robots are good enough to bomb bomb bomb the Pentagon and WTC on 9/11, they're good enough for killing 1 illegal alien.

I agree with you.

Oh bloody hell. You're not allowed to agree w/ me. The CIA didn't pull off 9/11. Your world view simply ignores the fact that not all truly evil folks out there wear dark suits and sunglasses and travel around in black helicopters.

Nice how suspect in political debate was enough to merit execution if the defendant is a muslim.

Rap,

Glad to see that you don't believe in innocent until proven guilty, and that you support a machiavellian guilt by association like the Chinese commies do.

DT: The programming is that advanced?

Whelp. Every day I realize just a little more how completely screwed all of us are.

No, I was commenting on the idiocy of John and Rap in their quest to kill everyone because one person in the group was a suspect. A suspect, mind you, suspected of belonging to a religious militia/charity that has nothing to do with 9.11 or the US, but only suspected, not proven, and 56 people or so that he happens to be physically in proximity of, like waitresses and newlyweds.

The programming recognizes the IR signature of humans, and then counts targets and proximity. High human density is automatically equated to army, so a school, hospital or wedding is an army. The only conceivable reason for this logic is genocide. We are not Nazis, we're Scrooge McNazi. We want to kill the maximum number on the cheap.

I read an account once of a bride to be and what happened to her wedding when it was crashed by an unexpected guest, a predator drone. Her fathers head rolling up to the alter and the whole bit. She and the groom survived, though injured. She had wedding pictures to illustrate her point.

It's things like that which will enter into the permanent record of history that will tell the world who we were as a culture, and what America, Democracy and Free Trade were really all about. We will go down with National Socialism, the Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution and the Khmer Rouge. Some will hope that our failure will discredit Capitalism and Democracy, but they will go on, just like Socialism, to commit other evils. Of course, when we lose, and we will lose, they will come to reduce us to rubble, so I will plan on not being here. Rappie will be whisked away to Some very pro-america hiding spot, while PN will go down with gun in hand, on one side or the other, but not before they get Wulfie.

Allow me to add to our list of evils, now, using robots in war. Robots as a weapon of war have come up many times in popular culture, Matrix, Terminator, etc., and they don't generally get a warm reception from the human population.

There will, of course, be "American Sympathizers." Many of these will simply be executed because they had the misfortune to live in a place that supported the Death Penalty.
