What did people compare what a tornado sounds like before there were freight trains ?

In the old days trains sounded like tornados.

The tornado was so loud you couldn't hear the cheers of the GOP voting to cut off funding to tornado warning system satellites!

So far this year, they've voted to cut off funding for tsunami warning systems, flood warning systems, and tornado warning systems. Y'know, because it's not like anyone ever needs those kinds of warnings...

All the warnings in the world won't stop a freight train comin' down your street.

Japan had the most sophisticated and rehearsed warning systems in the world, and it didn't stop the tsunami.

You idiots w/ your utopian visions, all funded by the glorious Imperial Alliance, errr...Federal Govt.

Of course, no one can accept at face value that you claim the GOP alone has tried to stop funding for ALL these warning systems. Do local and state communities bear none of the responsibility to set up systems to protect their own communities ?

So, in your estimation, since you can't STOP a tsunami, you shouldn't have warnings?

I guess since you can't stop a hurricane, nobody ever needs to know when one of those is coming either, right?

Volcano warnings? Who needs 'em?

And what good would it have done Memphis to have flood warning systems on a local level? So they can be warned that a flood is here? A massive flood on the Mississippi isn't exactly a "local" or "community" event - it effects the entire nation!

I don't know of too many communities with the pocket change to launch their own weather satellites, either.

But yes, the GOP has voted to defund every one of these warning systems. And as such, they have blood on their hands.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to insist that the aftermath of a tragedy is no time to place blame. That generally means they supported measures that worked to make the tragedy markedly worse, and are afraid the blame is going to fall squarely on their shoulders.

Thanks for showing us how YOU voted. Not that I'd ever doubt that you'd vote for whatever was cheapest and caused the most loss of life.

Yeah, that's a big tornado, and right through a very populated area. My coworker called me at work (she doesn't work today) to tell me that her niece is down there now attending a wedding, sounds like she's okay though. Wishing all fellow browncoats and fellow people as well as possible down there, scary stuff.

Yeah because I grew up with Twister the movie, I'm very pro advanced warning systems, the more scientific advances made there the better. You couldn't pay me to live in the part of the country that gets hit regularly though.

Well, in fairness, though, if Rappy thought that someone might have an idea where a tornado or tsunami was going to strike, he'd be all for spending federal money on torturing that person! It's not *JUST* about profits - he's also very, VERY pro-torture!

So much for his claims of "inalienable" rights that apply to "ALL men", eh?

Ah - that explains Rappy's reticence to fund warning systems: he doesn't want to fund a "myth" (unless it's a myth called "WMD" that allows us to kill a whole bunch of brown people). And all these unprecedented increases in storm intensity, tornado frequency, hurricane frequency AND intensity, getting three 500-year floods in five years... it's all a myth! None of it ever happened!

As usual, when Rappy's called on his blathering BS, he runs straight to personal insults. It's all you've got, son; it's all you are.

You all but stated that we should go back to the old feudal system and post a sentry on the castle parapets to serve as our lookout - a warning system that would be effective at warning you only when it was far too late.

For his next act, Rappy will call me some more names, then claim I'm not worthy of his esteemed knowledge, and therefore he will no longer attempt to answer me.

In other words, like Story pointed out in another thread, he'll "bitch out" of this one, tail between his legs, and go back to hiding under the porch. Or under his bed.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"You idiots w/ your utopian visions, all funded by the glorious Imperial Alliance, errr...Federal Govt."

And then, there was this:

The Japanese mayor who was laughed at for building a huge sea wall - until his village was left almost untouched by tsunami.

The huge sea wall and floodgates took 12 years to build and had been widely regarded as a £20million folly. But today one former Japanese mayor is being hailed as a saviour after the grandiose construction allowed his small town escaped the devastation wrought by the March 11 tsunami.

Let's say that expensive sea wall had never been built. Let's sat half the town was totally destroyed as a result. Let's say half the people died. How much would it cost in dollars alone just to rebuild? And what is the cost of all those lost lives? I guarantee, it's far, far more than the cost of that 'expensive' sea wall.

Once again, PN gets it almost completely wrong.

Obama declared the Joplin area a federal disaster area within hours of the devastation, meaning FEMA was on the scene and every affected resident is eligible for aid.

The people determined to DENY aid to Joplin are your beloved conservatives and tea-baggers.

You're not following. Either of you. Warning sirens ARE generally paid for by communities. But what do you rely on to tell you to SOUND those sirens? Again, are you simply posting sentries at the town's four corners?

The warning systems the GOP wants to cut off are satellite warning systems and Doppler radar systems, those that would warn of dangerous conditions from a distance, so that safety measures could be taken BEFORE the tornado is barreling down your street, when it's far too late.

Stop giving money to oil companies and big pharma. Stop giving welfare to farmers and corporations. Stop giving tax breaks to the people who need them the least.

You're right - the amount of money we give away to the richest of the rich isn't limitless.

Also, why did you favor keeping all of Bush's war spending off the federal budget? The only time you favor "limitless" federal money is when it's being used to fund illegal and unjustified wars overseas.

Frank and Dodd crashed the economy. Both should be in prison, or out of office, at the very least.

The "rich" pay more than their fair share of taxes, so that's a moot point. The problems are spending, not revenue collection.

We should cut out pork barrel spending, like fully operationally staffed airports in districts which don't need them...

Quote:

The John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport has an impressive $18 million runway made of reinforced concrete that's big enough to land any airplane in North America. The airport also has a $7 million air traffic control tower, a $14 million hanger and $8 million radar. Most of the time, the only thing the airport doesn't have is airplanes.

An average of just 20 people a day flew out of the Murtha Airport last year. But, the airport was just awarded more federal money -- $800,000 in stimulus funds to repave an alternate runway.

Located in Johnston, Pa., 56 miles from Pittsburgh, the Murtha Airport is a monument to the power of Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., who has steered some $150 million in taxpayer dollars to the airport over the last decade.

On one side of the airport's main entrance, a large photograph of Murtha adorns the wall; on the other side, there's a bronze plaque with his name. The airport isn't always deserted. There are three flights a day -- all of them to Washington's Dulles International Airport.

By the way, what ever happened to the idea that "deficits don't matter"? That was your mantra when your messiah Bush was in office. Republicans routinely explode the deficit and debt, claiming that it's good for the economy.

Why would you change your tune now? Are you admitting that you and all your right-wing heroes were completely wrong?

You're missing the point. USELESS things, like airports in the middle of no where or studies to find out why good teams make the NCAA tournament year after year are a complete waste of tax payer's money. Not going to war, but then spending that $ on weather satellites ( like we'd ever have spent it on THAT ) would still have us in as much debt, but less secure as a nation.

And ye of the distorted history. It was Newt and the GOP who shaved the spending down from what Clinton wanted to do , in the 90's, which saved this country from exploding the deficit.

Small deficits are fine, large ones, not so much.

The US economy was doing just fine, until the Dems took control of the House.

Funny, that.

Obama's exploded the deficit far greater in 2 years than Bush did in 8. Where's your outrage? Where's your indignation ?

Hmm ?

Actually, it was doing great until Bush & Co. were sElected. Then they promptly drove it off a cliff and tried to cover it up with massive deficits.

My outrage and indignation at your lies, you mean? Bush more than doubled the national debt while in office, with lots and lots of help from your neo-con buddies. Obama hasn't come close to that feat.

Your ignorance knows no bounds.

Stock market reached an all time high under Bush. The Clinton /Gore recession was already in place before Bush was in office, so your revisionist history is laughable, at best.

It also lost nearly 50% of its value under Bush. So the Bush/Cheney depression was well in place and already under way long before Obama was in office. Therefore, your revisionist history is beyond laughable.

You truly are ignorant of even the things you pretend to be an expert on, aren't you?

I never claimed the Frank/Dodd/Pelosi collapse didn't take place before Obama was in office.

There's been zero revisionist history on my part, so your total failure is complete.

Meanwhile, the Republican city council in Cedar Park (just northwest of Austin) has decided to REMOVE all the tornado-warning sirens in the city, and replace them with... A POSTCARD. They're mailing out a postcard telling people to "Have a kit. Have a plan. Stay informed."

That should do it. No warnings needed!

So much for leaving it to communities, or even posting a sentry on the town wall...

By the way, I can't find anything posted by the Associated Press that matches what you attributed to them. Can you provide any cites?
