I'm guessing this was posted more than 8 minutes ago, yes?

Ergo, it's BS.

No, the sun really does flare. As shown in the video.

Ergo, not bs.

Science humour, Auraptor. It takes eight minutes for light and the solar wind from the sun to reach the Earth. If the sun exploded, it would take us eight minutes to find out.

Really ? Wow! That's complete news to me! I had no idea, and imagine my surprise, this being a sci fi based site and all...

I'm glad the sun didn't blow up, I guess.

Least, not yet.

Okay, so I see what the problem is. You and Kwicko are simply incapable of taking anything the other poster says in context.

But you probably ought to make it clearer to the rest of us, your comment was non sequitor enough from Kwicko's that I assumed you honestly didn't know what Kwicko was talking about.

Light, gamma rays and x-rays take 8 minutes to reach Earth from the Sun, traveling at 186,000 miles per second (669,600,000 MPH).

Solar Wind is traveling at a mere 6-million MPH, so it takes at least 1.5 hours to reach Earth.

The original NASA photo of the giant explosion (CME) is the actual impending doom discussed in the news report. So it's a done deal. Except for follow-up CMEs etc.

I bet if NASA's satellites do get a preview of impending disaster, They won't bother to tell US from their underground bunkers we paid for.

Actually, if you read the thread in order, Kwickie's remark follows mine, and makes no direct reference to the title subject.

I know, which is why I was confused, it didn't seem like you were responding to the context of what Kwicko had said. You were on topic though.

I mean, I don't mean that as an insult. There's people I sometimes don't see eye to eye with either. HKcavalier has sometimes said that when she talks to me, she feels like I'm not talking with her, but past her. This just struck me as a similar situation.

I hope there are some flares while Byte is in Alaska so she can see, and hear, the Aurora.

Bingo. If the sun had exploded, I'd assume it's something we'd have heard about by way of not being here anymore.

Sure, there ARE explosions on the sun; in simplest terms, that's really all it is. But to say "Sun explodes...we're all going to die" is more than a little misleading. There are explosions on Earth, too, but I don't go 'round saying "Earth is exploding... we're all going to die!"

I thought that the solar wind, being made up of plasma and particulate might move slower since it has mass, but I couldn't remember what the speed difference was so I combined them.

Thanks PN.

Riona: Ooh. An event like this, there might be unprecedented amounts of people seeing the auroras all over the world. But yeah, the ionosphere might be a little unsettled for months after this, greatly increasing our chances.

Maybe we should unplug our electronics. CTS was smart, building a Faraday cage for her stuff.

Yes, that's the important thing when life on earth is about to be extinguished - who paid for underground bunkers.
