Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I have always been a proponent of teaching children the martial arts. Whatever martial art they happen to enjoy, be it Kung Fu or Judo or Boxing or whatever.

While I understand the desire to limit youthful injuries, I am of the camp that says this sport's advantages outweigh its potential hazards, particularly with the employment of good rules and safety gear.

I think Doctors would better serve the youth of this country if they used their science to make improvements to safety gear in order to make the sport safer, rather than simply attempting to end it.

I agree with Anthony, it is good for kids to learn to fight if they like, both for mastering personal discipline and because its good to know and they can enjoy the competition of it etc. Total agreement from me here.

Yup. We can't mitigate ALL the risk, but we have the ability to lessen it quite a bit.

And I'd wager that more kids die playing football than die boxing.

Keep the Shiny side up

I've also seen stuff recently about the damage high school and college football players may be taking from blows to the head, even those hits below the level of concussive. With some high school defensive linemen going close to 300 lbs, and the 'beat your opponent down to win' philosophy from the coaches, it's getting pretty rough.

I'm not sure that there is a solution to this. You can tell kids about the risks, but they're teenagers, hence(in their own minds) 100% bulletproof.

I saw a piece on the news about this new test they give sportsplaying kids who hit their heads to make sure they're ready to go back to playing, that way they don't start playing again too soon after a headhit. The point is to reduce the risk of secondary dammage on top of a concussion that hasn't healed yet. I think its a good idea, plus it means that more kids get to play and they all have to be better players so that if someone is taking time out the team doesn't fail and blame it on the person taking said time off.
