I'm surprised no one said anything about this. I like how Raptor et al posts earthquakes on here, even if they are in remote areas, its interesting to hear about them since I find earthquakes interesting.

Some had been wondering if we'd see a big one, in the pacific NW. There was Chili, Japan, NZ, on the edges of the Ring of Fire. Thankfully it wasn't too bad, from the reports, and there was no tsunami.

Funny, for all the time humans like to spend fussing at each other, our planet goes about it's business, and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it.

Yep, I'd been waiting for that one. Good thing there was no tsunami. One of the times I know about Alaska had a big quake, it registered a 9.1, and they had a tsunami that turned land fifty miles inland into salt water marshes and killed off the vegetation.

Now we need to be concerned that more big quakes are going to start occurring as you go south along that plate boundary.

Everybody else has been gettin' 'em, California is due, way OVER-due, for a REALLY BIG, really bad one.

Plus when one part of a fault slips, it means by necessity that you build up tension in another part of the fault. So cycling around the entire Pacific Rim plate was really only a matter of time after Chile.

Wouldn't even have to be a BIG one for it to be really bad. But that's the thing about this planet. It's always moving, at its own pace, and there's not a hell of a lot folks can do about it. Other than try to stay out of the way.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

They've been "predicting", "warning about", etc., The Big One here ever since I was a kid. We had Loma Prieta; So. Ca. had their L.A. quake, but no Big One has shown up yet. I wait to worry until it does. At least it's not a guaranteed annual thing like hurricanes and tornadoes! It'll happen when and if it does happen, I'm just damned glad I don't work in an S.F. highrise anymore! Was off the day the Loma Prieta hit, thank goodness, but heard all about it. One woman quit; said she'd never work in the City again after that, and I'm not one to blame her!

We DID get a reaction from the Alaskan one, by the way--and I shouold say, too, "Now THAT's a quake!", 'cuz 7.1 is worthy of note. I meant to respond when I first saw the post, but left to take the dogs to the beach and after that forgot.

It was serendipitous for us. We were going to take them to Crissy Field; at the last second we decided to go to Rodeo Beach instead--it's on the ocean and our favorite beach. When we got there we topped the dunes and stood there with our jaws on the sand. It didn't look like Rodeo surf at ALL! Big fellas, breaking in closer than normal, bigger than normal, and the widdest swath of white water I've EVER seen on the beach! We ended up staying far longer than we usually do, we were so impressed.

The surfers (always there) had moved from their usual place close to the cliffs out into the middle of the beach--not taking any chances, obviously. I always go barefoot so I can walk in the surf (it's definitely NOT a swimming beach, the rips are deadly). That day was fascinating, you could FEEL the power of the outgoing water to the point where you knew if you fell over, you were goin' out!

Anyone who's familiar with beaches knows that when a wave washes in, the action of it washing back out again will cut the power of the wave following it, yes? Not these guys. Wave washes in, washes higher than normal, washes out, hits the next incoming wave, and JOINS IT, so that the two together make deeper, stronger whitewater. Never seen that before!

There's this long swath of rocks, big and small, just above the tide line; Choey spend most of her time there hunting for pretty rocks, Monterey Jade, sea glass, etc. It was GONE! Totally wiped out, nothing left but the tiny colored pebbles and sand (she was broken hearted). So those puppies had to come up ABOVE WINTER TIDE LINE to wipe it out!

It was something to remember...we kept an eye on the dogs because they've never dealt with such stuff, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We have some huge rocks that jutt out of the sand, covered with mussels and other shells and occasionally starfish...when the tide is out you can climb up on them. The tide WAS out that day, and you could walk right up to them...but you didn't want to, because of how high the waves were that were coming in. Those rocks all were just COVERED with starfish, right up to the highest place the waves hit. I'm guessing they moved inland to anchor themselves, because while we always see some there, nothing like as many.

So down here by the Golden Gate, we definitely got effects from that 7.1!

Nature is magnificent.

Niki, indeed it is.

And yes, the earth will do what the earth will do and there's nothing we can do to stop it or coax it.

We had a client today who was telling me about that big one in Alaska in 64, she was there, a young girl she was, and they were sledding at the time and they got to skip school for the next few days because the town fell apart a bit.
