Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

As far as I'm concerned, if your population can articulate the desire for freedom and independence, then it should be granted to them. For Israel to warn them against declaring independence is wrong. So many Mideast states have thrown off their masters and declared freedom to public acclaim. Should the ghetto state of Palestine have fewer rights?

I say give them the freedom they desire.

Well, thing is, I dunno if anyone can "give" someone else "freedom", I mean look at our so-called efforts to do that elsewhere, right ?

But what we CAN do, is stop financially, politically, and militarilty supporting Israels attempt to crush it.

At which point I would say to them - you can have all the freedom you wish, IF.. you can take it and hold it.

That's all any of us in this world really gets.

What ought they to do? Split the country of Israel down the middle? I'm legitimately asking this question because I wonder if anyone has any ideas that make sense to me, because I understand that the Palistinians get the shaft but I want Israel to have space, so what should be done in your opinions.

Hello,

I do not believe it is the custom for many Israelis to live in Palestinian territory, so the rightness of surrendering that territory to the people who do live there, and of granting them self-rule and self-responsibility seems also to be self-evident.

You think, but that ain't how it works, Anthony - hell, by now they got it down to a fucking system.

Israeli "settlers" illegally cross the border and more or less invade a Palestinian village, terrorizing and chasing away the locals, with violence and bloodshed, and when the locals regroup and fight back, the "settlers" call in the IDF to "defend" them, which then crosses the border as well (a pretty blatant act of war, you ask me, but no one ELSE seems to notice or care) and blows the crap out of Palestinians trying to defend their homes.

"Settlers" take over, bring in more, set up shop.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

You know, kinda like *WE* did with the Native Americans.

So I don't think I'd call it self-evident, given that such territory was seized with violence and murder, and given that it was supported by american dollars, american bullets, all I feel when I see the carnage left behind by this "custom" is shame.

I'm not sure that this particular move by the Palestinians can possibly achieve anything beyond symbolism (though I sympathise with their aims). As you've alluded to both sides are living on and contesting the same land. The only solution therefore is to divide and *share* the land - which means a peace treaty and mutually agreed borders.

Maybe if Palestine declared statehood *without* declaring and specifying their borders, as Israel did in 1948, that would be better.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Thank you for your support of the Confederate States of America.

But really, the problem with this idea is that the population that wants freedom and independence may want the freedom to stamp out all dissent and the independence to punish those who don't agree with the majority.

Hello,

Actually, while I consider it incredibly unwise, I support any state whose majority wishes to secede, providing they make reasonable accommodation for those who have no such wish, and make payment for Federal properties 'acquired' during the secession.

Once the secession is complete, it is entirely possible for the seceded territory to be brimming with naughtiness, but I'm not sure we have the right to decide such things in advance and pre-decline the endeavor.
