On Thursday, President Obama, along with the First Lady and Vice President Joe Biden, marked Hannukah - the Jewish Festival of Lights - with a celebration at the White House.

Hannukah, however, does not start until sunset on Dec 20, not Dec. 8.

Howard Portnoy of Hot Air notes that Obama also broke with Jewish tradition of lighting "only one candle the first night, increasing that number by 1 each of the eight nights of the holiday." Instead, Obama lit all of the candles.

Barry, it's not a candelabra.

Look, I GET that you want to get the hell out of DC ,and spend yet another family vacation in Hawai'i. Sure, what ever... knock yourself out. And since you'll be on the beach, sipping mai tais w/ Michelle, it's fine that you want to remind all your Jewish voters , those with deep pockets, to remember you when they give their campaign donations , but seriously ? Why can't you just have the menorah there, and remind everyone that the first candle will be lit, appropriately, on the first night of Hanukkah, and just leave it at that ? Why must you make a complete mockery of a non-Muslim tradition ?

No excuse for this. And this isn't Barry's 1st rodeo, or December in the White House.

Add another one to the " if BUSH had done this"... the media would be going ape poopy over themselves in mocking him. But Barry ? Meh. He gets a complete pass.

Feh, non-issue.

Look, I always give benefit of the doubt when one of our presidents tries to respect traditions not their own no matter how badly they fumble, at least the attempt means something - as one might recall despite thinking he looked a bit silly I gave shrub some cred for wearing "local" garb overseas in an attempt to respect the culture of others just as I did obama, who also looked a bit silly hisself.

I find it a bit odd that his buddy Rahm didn't explain it to him, but maybe they had a falling out or something, who bloody knows...

Anyhow, hamfisted fumble it may be, at least the pretense was there, which is far more than MY beliefs ever get from the powers that be.

I do take your point about shoulda known better, but obama has his D'oh! moments too, remember his gifts to the british court, neh ?

Oh, I know - he was lighting one for each of the "eight unelected Supreme Court Justices" that Rick Perry was whinging about.

Nope - that can't be it, because there are NINE candles there (same as the number of Supremes, but don't tell Ricky; numbers only confuse him)

It's not a candelabra. The meaning was clear for all, but the predictable dismissal of this is to be expected. Had any GOP muffed up the menorah lighting, we'd never hear the ending of it. Late night tv would give non stop jokes, yet Barry? " meh ". Praise, even, not scorn or ridicule. No media or left wing bias going on, at all.

Had he blown them all out, & wished for world peace, the media would have only praised him all the more.

Looks like the early nature of the event was acknowledged by the Pres, and the event was carefully overseen by a Rabbi. Jewish newspapers are not reporting any offence, so I'm not sure why not doing it exactly to tradition offends any gentiles.

The way I see it, holding it early means that the Jewish attendees get to celebrate Hannukah with their families, as it was intended.

And as for lighting the candle, Obama isn't jewish, unless some nutbag wants to start that as another rumour. He won't be lighting a candle every night of Hannakah, because he won't be celebrating Hannuakah. This is a friendly guesture, political in nature, to sure up the Iraeli/US alliance.

Nothing. Just wanted to chip in with a bit of reality.

If the worst you can say of your president is that he put on a Hannukah celebration and did it a bit less trad than expected, then he is clearly doing better than I thought.

That's not the worst, because it's not even close to what happened. Arrogant Barry did what he wanted, and the myrmidons just go along, praising his every screw up.

In this instance, it didn't sound like a screw up, it sounded like a plan. Events like these are highly orchestrated, they don't tend to make mistakes. When Obama visited Australia for a recently lightening tour, I suspect that had his tiolet breaks itinerised.

Remember too, if the President HADN'T noted Hanukah, Rappy would have pointed that out as "arrogant", as well.

Rappy firmly believes so strongly that Obama is a Muslim, that he'll somehow manage to twist it around so that if he DOESN'T celebrate a Muslim holiday, he's being arrogant, and if he notes any NON-Muslim holiday, that's also arrogant.

In other words, the only way Rappy can keep his hatred alive is to constantly paint the President as arrogant, no matter what he does. If he appears contrite, it's arrogance. Happy? Arrogant. Concerned? You guessed it. Angry? Yup.

And anyone who doesn't concede the arrogance? "Myrmidons," according to the rapster.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Haaretz, Israel's oldest newspaper, had this to say about the event:

Quote:

The annual Hanukkah reception timeline at the White House does not change much each year. Usually, there is some unique Menorah, brought especially for the festive occasion (this time, a Menorah made in a displaced persons’ camp after World War II, was lent by The Jewish Museum in New York), a mix of Jewish lawmakers, officials, rabbis, activists and donors, president's remarks, music and good food.

But each year, there seem to be more and more smartphones, with guests barely looking at the President wishing them happy holiday. Instead, everyone is busy taking photos or videos of him.

This year, in a hall traditionally decorated with the Christmas tree (and a Menorah on the podium), President Obama, accompanied by the First Lady, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden, greeted about 550 guests. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was also present, along with the new White House Director of Jewish Outreach, Jarrod Bernstein, the Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, AIPAC's Howard Kohr and Lee Rosenberg, Conference of Presidents' Malcolm Hoenlein, NJDC's David Harris, the Orthodox Union's Natan Diament and many others.

The Hanukkah reception came about a week earlier than the Holiday itself, which the President readily acknowledged, "We’re jumping the gun just a little bit. The way I see it, we’re just extending the holiday spirit. We're stretching it out. But we do have to be careful that your kids don’t start thinking Hanukkah lasts 20 nights instead of eight. That will cause some problems.....

So while it is not yet Hanukkah, let’s give thanks for our blessings, for being together to celebrate this wonderful holiday season. And we never need an excuse for a good party."

"This year," Obama said, "We have to recognize the miracles in our own lives. Let’s honor the sacrifices our ancestors made so that we might be here today. Let’s think about those who are spending this holiday far away from home - including members of our military who guard our freedom around the world. Let’s extend a hand to those who are in need, and allow the value of tikkun olam to guide our work this holiday season. This is also a time to be grateful for our friendships, both with each other and between our nations. And that includes, of course, our unshakeable support and commitment to the security of the nation of Israel," he concluded to applause.

The West Point Jewish Chapel Choir performed for the audience, the food (including Sushi Rolls, Caramelized Pearl Onions, Shitake Mushrooms, Pine Nut Herb Crusted Lamb Chops and Homemade Sufganyot) was kosher under "strict rabbinical supervision of Rabbi Levi Shemtov, Lubavitch Center of Washington (Chabad)," as the White House put it.

When the guests line for a picture with the President (or the kosher raspberry jelly), one can forget - for a while - about political tensions and the 2012 elections.

Oddly, not a negative word about the event. Maybe it's just another shallow effort by the right to try to convince people that Israel and the President are at odds. Seems like particularly weak sauce to me.

Shocker. The MSM didn't criticize the President for his screw up.

But anyone else pauses for too long, or mispronounces a word ( unless it's "corpse" for " corps " ) then it's pile on time.

Hell, I'm not Jewish, and not even a believer, but traditions and religious ceremonies have their history, and Obama's lighting of the menorah candles like a b-day cake just ignorantly and arrogantly ignores the entire purpose behind Hanukkah.

What would you have him do, Rap? Force a whole lot of people to celebrate Hanukkah at an official political function instead of with him? Imagine if you were in Israel and a political official decided to give a nod to Christianity and did it on Christmas day, so you had to leave your family and hang out with the drones.

Obama aint jewish. He's not going to celebrate for 8 days, lighting a candle each day. He's been advised of the most respectful way to do it, and no one Jewish appears to have been offended.

I think I already said what he should have done . And trust me, many who are Jewish ARE offended. They're just too good natured to dis the President over this. Obama knows he has the Jewish vote, ( why ? A mystery no one can fully understand ) and the MSM sure as hell aren't going to say anything negative. Not since the Emperor's new clothes have there been such an aversion to criticize this President, when he so clearly deserves it.

I agree, Frem. Nonstory. But we know who pores over news reports everyday, desperate to find SOMETHING to knock any progressive/liberal/whatever and/or Obama over. This one's pretty pathetic, especially given Bush did exactly the same thing, according to him.

Find it interesting that he admits Bush did the same thing...does that nullify this whole thread?

...or not...

On the other hand; kudos for admitting Bush did the same thing. Could have left that out, nobody would have noticed, so major points for being fair and posting it.
