Forget blaming the poor. Let's just blame fat people.

https://www.ajc.com/news/grim-childhood-obesity-ads-1279499.html

Quote:

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is hearing strong criticism from some camps for its in-your-face advertising campaign designed to attack Georgia’s childhood obesity epidemic. But the pediatric health system stands firmly by its approach, saying the grim advertisements featuring overweight kids are necessary to get families to recognize the widespread public health problem.
Enlarge photo

A ad campaign by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta offers stark black-and-white images of overweight children sharing bold and often uncomfortable messages.

Using tools such as television commercials and billboards late this year, the campaign has offered stark black-and-white images of overweight children sharing bold and often uncomfortable messages. In one, a child named Bobby sadly asks his obese mother, “Mom, why am I fat?” His mother simply sighs heavily and the commercial fades out.

Some public health experts, however, say the approach could be counterproductive when it comes to childhood obesity. The commercials and billboards do not give families the tools they need to attack the problem, some critics say. Others say the images will simply further stigmatize obesity and make it even less likely for parents and children to acknowledge that their weight is unhealthy and should be addressed.

Yeah, cause that's so much easier than taking a hard look at HFCS, MSG and all the other crap we let slide in things we consider "food", sure.

That's only SLIGHTLY less offensive than me seeing a commercial for a cosmetic surgery clinic during a block of saturday morning cartoons aimed at young girls - that really, really set me off, that day.

Anyhows, go to the supermarket, pick up ten random items, and look at the ingrediants (preferably with a list of the alternate names they use to obfuscate the ACTUAL ingrediants in the other hand) and tell me how many contain HFCS, MSG or other nasty things ?

I'd lay money on at LEAST eight of ten, ten RANDOM items, mind you.

That by itself oughta tell you something.

Rrrgh

As if the bombardment isn't so bad all other hours of the day, they have to introduce the kids to the shallow superficial obsession with unnatural beauty while they're young.

I've had five year old cousins wearing makeup and being upset over not having boyfriends. There's precocious, and then there's damn society stealing childhood.

Americans aren't becoming fat and soft. We already are. How can we have a federal govt worried about children going to bed hungry when we have the most obese kids in the world ?

The nanny state is failing, miserable, because we've stopped trying to teach people to THINK for themselves.

When you can't think for yourself, you can't act for yourself, and you relinquish all decision making to your masters.

I agree with Frem that we need to get all those fake things out of our food supply where possible because they're bad for our bodies. But I do think that childhood obesity is an issue that seems to get worse as time goes by, partly because of those crap ingredients and partly because parents aren't taking it seriously. I fail to see how Raptor's statement relates to this particular thread.

I wasn't commenting on the specifics of the ad campaign, but of the issue of obesity in general in the United States.

But yeah, probably not the best way to get through to kids / parents that there are better ways to live healthy.

Not the only reasons kids are overweight. I think medical issues are a big part of the problem, too. Kids with Prader-Willie, undiagnosed thyroid problems, blood sugar problems, arthritis, temperature sensitivity problems, depression, "fat genes" slow metabolism, ect...I think adverts like that are a slap in the face to kids already trying to deal with the shit nature gives them, and then double slaps them with self-appearance problems too...

My kid is a foot taller than all of her classmates, and the next grade too. She can't run the length of a room without getting a side stitch, because she's already stretched out. That combined with her temperature problems, and fabulous genetics...yeah, she's chunky and she knows it. Commercial like that WOULD damage her fragile little ego, no doubt about it. Once she slows down on the growing it should get easier for her, but until then.... she can't hear how pretty she is quite enough, and I make sure she has a closetfull of the nicest dresses around. All I can do, for now...

Local food. all the junking of food is done to create durable foodlike objects. Buy locally. Okay, maybe that's easier her.

Prader-Willi Syndrome is genetic. Or rather, chromosomal, but definitely hereditary. Mice with it are stillborn, for obvious reasons.

Wish, walking. Make sure she walks, and doesn't sit. And watch the high carb items, they shut down the body's fat burning. I found this out digging around on type one diabetes for chris. it's a direct link, the insulin response actively closes the fat cells, preventing fat burning.

Yep, we don't do desserts, 'cept ice cream in the summertime, and she and I share a coke a week. My mom was an aerobics instructor in the 80's, she couldn't handle having a chunky kid. We grew all of our food, even the chickens, but I still got Weight Watchers and sent to a gym. Never was what people consider "slim." Didn't take lunch all through high school, either. Even worked two jobs, didn't matter. My great gran was chunky all her days and she was 96, btw...I'm somewhat lucky I married a man that likes us cuddly girls, even if I think it's just so he don't have to go on a diet, his own self Though I agree, after it being pointed out, some models DO look like there's something wrong with 'em...
'Course there's definately something wrong with THIS chick too...

No where ta walk here. Can't take her outside most of the year. School won't let anyone into the gym, lest the floors be besmirched. They won't even let the kids on it until they change into shoes that haven't been outside Yeah, working on getting the hell outta here...

I think that there's a difference between chunky and fat, some kids are naturally bigger than others, and since our genetics are getting worse and worse it stands to reason that that plays some role, but I still think that transfats are bad.

I was thin and average until high school when I chunked out a bit, was that way through high school and college and then I lost the extra 20 pounds, not intentionally, it just happened because of the change of not doing college anymore. I'm very pleased with my weight and physical appearance today. I think of myself as being quite pretty and my mom says it makes me sound conceded, but I need something about my body to be proud of since the rest of it doesn't work right at all and is troublesome. My appearance and my super good immune system though are things I'm proud of.

Hey Riona.. got a pic you can send me ?

As long as one is healthy, I have no problem with them feeling good about themselves. It's when folks got to the extremes, of either letting themselves go, or being so obsessed over how they look, that they often lose perspective.

What I really can't fathom is when folks who 'waddle' around, and think they really look great.

Gee that sucks. I can't imagine it. Do you not go outside because of the weather?

Weight is pretty simple really. If calories in are greater than calories used, fat is stored. The human body has evolved to be very efficient at storing fat, it was of great benefit when we could expect periods of near starvation to have those reserves built up. The issue is that most people live sedentary lives and food, especially those high in fat and high in sugar are plentiful and easy to obtain.

To not be fat, you have to eat less than you burn. If you live a sedentary, indoor life, you actually should eat very little, even as a child.

I think those kind of lifestyles are terrible, for your physical and mental well being. I think we all need to move and we all need to be outdoors as much as possible.

Wish, I'm not sure how old your daughter is, but does she do anything like swimming, or scouts?

My kid is "allergic ta cold" it's called Cold Urticaria. She can't be exposed for more than a few minutes or rashes that look like leopard spots appear, and it's getting worse, I think- due to hormones... And yes, we LOVE swimming, during the summer. There are NO indoor pools in my county. We did sports for a couple seasons, but I'm serious- the girl cannot run, and won't try. We really really would like to move somewhere warmer, but can't until we finish this home remodel as we can't sell in our current condition. Didn't know she had it five years ago, because it was so mild, but like I said -it's gotten worse.

Yanno, that has GOT to be hands-down, one of the stupidest things I've ever heard, and I've heard some winners in my time, hard not to with Rappy and PN always willing to add to the pile, yanno ?

Ask kids not to make a mess ?
Sheeeit, why not ask birds not to fly, fish not to swim, you'd get about as far, and yet the system and the people in it continue to try - you have any idea how MUCH pyschological and emotional abuse it takes just to discourage a child from asking questions ?
All that effort, spent for naught, or for minimal "gain" so far as "gain" is measured in the destruction of their humanity, and all we really need DO to make our world, our society, that much of a better place is get the hell out of each others way and just let humans BE human.
Too bad no one else seems to see it like that.

So they're gonna muck up the floor, so freakin what, give the custodian something to do besides reading porno mags in the maintanence closet all day, wouldn't it ?

That reminds me of some real idiocy on Ft Lee at the Quartermaster school, of exactly the same stripe.
The unit I was training with for a period of time, and not so very long as that, was so goddamn flaky about the barracks floor that you weren't even ALLOWED in there without the permission of a squad leader and even then you hadda borrow these stupid freakin slipcovers for your boots, yadda freakin yadda, all spit and shine and polish, and don't ya know they spent so much time sucking up for inspections not a bloody ONE of em could do their proper job, the cooks couldn't cook, and the supply yahoos couldn't read an invoice for shit, wouldn't know an audit if it bit them, and as far as the primary job of a soldier goes they were utterly incompetent - they looked pretty though...
*insert derisive sneer here*
Needless to say our mutually inconsistent viewpoints of things clashed in what eventually became a pretty ugly fashion and noting my effect on other personnel the company commander gave me fifth platoon instead of risking more trouble, the hilarity of which is that fifth platoon had only one member.
And of course, they inspected that forty-man bay and found it wanting, at which point I pointed out it was clean, servicable and free of vermin, ergo who gives a shit how shiny the floors are!
Funny, that was the last time *anyone* bothered with inspection of bay five.
Even funnier is that fifth platoon scored the highest on coursework, leading to my constant mocking of the other platoons as a bunch namby-pampy housemaid wannabes.

Anyhows, I daresay a little rule-breaking is not only justified, but downright healthy, in regards to their spiffy, shiny floor - teach some folk what their priorities should be, it would.

Nice Job, Ri! And you don't look anything like I pictured, but you look like River, just a wee bit... If you were looking for constructive criticism, I would say don't be afraid to explore the deeper side of your voice- I can hear it in there. And a little more inflection of rhythm wouldn't hurt. Otherwise, really, really good! And hey, you can remember the whole song! More than I can do, my memory is shite.

Also, on the subject matter, I would like ta add my hubbs was Army about 15 years ago, and they wanted him to get down to a certain weight, and when he did he went all anemic. Not everybody is SUPPOSED to be a stick figure. Some people really do need extra reserves.

And Frem- I have a sneakin suspicion the groundskeeper/janitor has ocd. But I will say the floors are from the late 70's and they still look pretty good. I think they figure they wouldn't get funds for a new floor, since they are chopping out and consolidating schools left and right here to save a buck, we even share a principal with two other schools. I would say worry 'bout it when the time comes, but then I ain't calling the shots either...

Magon's, I talk with an Irish accent, its a chosen accent, people in my area just sound like typical television Americans, I'm in Portland on the west coast, its a big city in Oregon, the state everyone forgets. My inner being is Irish though so I've chosen to have an Irish accent, sometimes its thicker than other times and sometimes its very thin indeed, it gets thicker when I'm upset and hurting.

Those were recorded in my friend's basement about 3 and a half years ago so age me a little bit and you know what I look and sound like.

Nope, none of that.( Well, I am pretty non-musical, ability wise ) I have decent hearing, and can crudely mimic , briefly, a few notables, but that's about it. Sure can't carry on a conversation or 'sing' like anyone else. Hell, I can't even sing period. If I can't stand the sound of my own voice, i know no one else can.

Ever heard anyone do a really poor accent ? My guess is that it's mostly from not hearing it enough properly, and seldom practiced... but that's not so much my problem. I just think some have more of a talent for such things than others. Short folks wish they were taller, others wish they could do voice impressions. *shrugs* Either ya got it or ya don't.

Some accents come easier than other. An Australian accent is almost impossible to get right, especially by Americans. The only person I've heard do it really well was Meryl Streep who is gifted.

I can do some english and american accents easily, northern irish, and south african and new zealand - both pretty close to how I speak.

Weird thing is, or maybe not so weird, is how quickly I and others were able to pick up some Scottish accent, while briefly visiting there. Far easier to speak it if that's all you hear, I guess.

ht-loss-surgery.html

Quote:

When her pediatrician, Dr. Senya Vayner, first mentioned weight-loss surgery, Ms. Gofman was 17, still living with her parents in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, her bedroom decorated with glow-in-the-dark stars because she was afraid of the dark.

There was no question, at 5-foot-1 and more than 250 pounds, she was overweight. But she resisted, saying she could diet.

“I’ll lose weight,” Ms. Gofman assured her doctor.

Dr. Vayner said, prophetically, “It’s not your fault, but you’re not going to be able to do it.”

Along with the obesity epidemic in America has come an explosion in weight-loss surgery, with about 220,000 operations a year — a sevenfold leap in a decade, according to industry figures — costing more than $6 billion a year. And the newest frontier is young patients like Ms. Gofman, who allowed The New York Times to follow her for a year as she had the operation and then embarked on a quest to lose weight, navigating challenges to her morale, her self-image and her relationships with family members and friends.

We soooo need to get out of the "quick fix" mentality. This makes me so sad.

Completely agree. Maybe the doc is cynical at her claims she'll lose the weight, or maybe that's how the Dr. makes his/ her living ( sorry, not familiar w/ the name "Senya" enough to know gender ), and is sadly taking part in steering this young girl to an procedure she doesn't really need, for the sake of making $ for the practice... I cannot say.

Not to go all Tom Cruise here, but telling folks they can't do something, when the absolutely can, is really pathetic. Sure, there may be some instances where surgery is helpful, but I'd say a huge % ( say like 99 ) should never have to go that route.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Going to agree with rappy that people need to think for themselves. That starts with blocking out the commercials for those sugar-disguised-as-breakfast cereals and toaster-ready sugar tarts, and the enticements of stupid little toys (made in China) when you buy a "Happy Meal", and on to commercials for automobiles that you can't afford because they make you feel rugged. Then move on to AM radio and all of the MSM.

Right on, Rap.

We don't believe in ourselves anymore.

I don't see there is anything in inherently wrong in running a marketing campaign on health issues. We get them all the time here, for smoking, road safety etc etc. Shock tactics have a place in all of this, as a bit of a wake up call to people, but they have limited life span as people eventually turn off. In this case, i do wonder whether using children in this case will actually increase the amount of bullying that they have to endure, but I guess it is worth a shot.

Obeisty is a serious health issue, and the health odds are stacked against you if you are obese as a child. I think a lot of people do make poor choices regarding eating and exercise, but I also see that we are a sedentary society in general.

still Europeans manage to be a lot slimmer than people in the US and Australia. I wonder why that is?

Lot more places to go and are worth seeing. I would NEVER be home if I could get a rail pass on the weekends and step off in another COUNTRY in just a few hours. We went over the line into Kentucky this weekend, there was not one single store in the town we went to that we did not have in our own town, that wasn't exactly alike Monoculture has sucked the fun right out of this country...

We have gotten year passes to EVERYTHING there is to get passes to just to have somewhere to go-zoo, museums, theme parks, bowling, we've done the mall until it makes me want to scream, we did one year visiting all the play parks in the region, we went to evey arcade place within 200 miles, now we do flea markets, but I don't have a clue what we're going to do when that gets boring. I hate taking classes and dealing too much with actual people... But I did sign my kid up for a one month latin dance aerobics class for Feb. We'll see how THAT goes...

As someone who doesn't live in the US, I wouldn't have said it appears that you have either a monoculture or nothing much to do. I'd love to visit a lot of your country for its beautiful countryside, and diverse cities, history, I guess the grass is always greener.

PS You are from the US?

If you chopped the US in the middle horizonally, and start on the middle of the east coast and drive west I live about 12 hours drive to the middle of nowhere...farmland as far as you can go. Snore.

Different places are always new and exciting for a variable amount of time as per the person, I suppose. I've been wanting to leave here ever since the first time I sunk my toes in warm ocean sand, and got knocked over by a clear blue-green wave...I fell in love with it, and since then everything else is just...inferior...

We had the chance to leave when we first got married, but my husbands family threw such a forked fit...and in retrospect I prolly wouldn't have been here for my dad when he died last year if we had, but I still regret not going...

So what do you not like the most where you are?

Iowa?

The worst thing about where I live is the extremes of weather and the impact on us.

2009 we had some of the worst bushfires in recording history and had to evacuate about 4 times. Last year, the rains came and we've had heaps of storm damage to our house as well as feeling like we're in the middle of a swamp.

I'd like a period of gentle temperatures and regular mild rainfall.

The last few years have been bizarre here too. It started with a summer that didn't get hot then two years of RAIN and storms where everybody lost a roof or a tree or 20(we lost 3- out of 5!), now a winter that won't snow??

Mother Nature's got the PMS, I think...
Though I'm not at all minding the no snow thing!

Beir bua agus beannacht

A Magon's a chara, Yeah I've been to Ireland, I loved it. My dad took me when I was 20 for an early, two years early, college graduation present and ever since I've been trying to figure out who I can go back with.

Raptor, yeah, that is my chosen accent, I can do others too but not forever like I can do Irish accents. My mom is funny, any accent she tries to do comes out wonky southern-gone-wrong-thing. I like that I look like River, I really respect and admire her so lookin like her is cool. I can't kill anyone with my brain, but I wonder if my brain will kill me someday unfortunately.

A DT a stor, yes it feels really good to hear you say that because men in real life don't fancy me, they never have, so online flirting is welcome. The only men who want me in real life are stalker types who discover me through my work at NAMI. I'm kind of scared right now because the one who keeps calling found our office and now knows what I look like and that scares me because he'll come back and what happens if he escalates? So having nice people online tell me I'm pretty feels really good and is welcome.

I take comfort in my utter homeliness and off-putting bad habits IRL. It allows me to avoid otherwise awkward social situations. I don't have to let people down because they don't look at me. It's kind of win-win.

Online flirting is kinda scary though.

Byte, you constantly worry me. You sound SOOOOO much like my husband. He's convinced he's ugly and a psycho and I'll leave him because why would I wanna be around that?? The only difference between him and you is he realizes that it's not healthy to think that way. We all need people, as much trouble as it is to deal with 'em-we still need the interaction.

Our "song" is Desperado. It contains much wisdom.

BTW, I know you'll prolly take offence, but... Hubbs takes anti-depressants and it helps him deal with all these negative feelings about himself. They really don't change who you are, they just make it easier to be happy. I'm not a doctor, but it sure seems to me you could use a piece of happy some days...

cause that's so much easier than taking a hard look at HFCS, MSG and all the other crap we let slide in things we consider "food"
Can you tell me how ANY effort to make people more aware will change anything? Any effort by the government...well, just look at how Michelle Obama's efforts have been greeted. Individuals won't do it, we can already see that by how much information is already OUT THERE to which people pay no attention.

Has nothing whatsoever to do with a "nanny society", obviously. It's purely about capitalism, which of course some of us would DIE rather than admit. Give people what they like, they'll pay for it. So put sugar in EVERYTHING and you'll beat out your competitor...or advertise it that way (the kids pick up on that part, even tho' they big "push" these days is to talk about how "healthy" things are). As I mentioned before, Jo was shocked when she was here that there is sugar in almost everything we eat, including bread, and that we eat sweets for breakfast, whereas in England they more often eat (or used to) meat and more solid food in the morning.

We are an obese society because we are a rich society...history shows that and so do all the nations in the world today. Not gonna change that by either education OR enforcement, so don't look for it to change any time soon. Poor kids in our country are often obese because it's cheaper and faster for working parents to feed them at Mickey D's. Hasn't got a goddamned thing to do with anything "left" of "nanny" whatever.

As to the ads, yeah, I've been hearing about the issue too, and I think it's reprehensible. Yet another well-intentioned effort which will fail as miserably as all the others. I have no expectation or even hope of Americans (or Brits or Germans or French or...) getting thinner until/unless food shortages force them to (which is coming, as many of us believe...). And yes, Europe doesn't have the same problem we do, but a) they DO have it (try Italy), and b) We've always been richer and where possible could do whatever we damn well "please"...which means pleasing ourselves, food wise (or food-like-substances wise, which is what most of that crap is). Another factor is that in Europe, people ride trains to the next country daily to shop or eat if they want, whereas we're pretty generic in what's available from one state to another. How many people do you know who cross state lines to shop? In parts of Europe, from a documentary I saw, it's quite prevalent.

People usually do what pleases them unless they are forced otherwise (and even then...); fat and sweet please the brain. End of story. The exceptions to the rule are few and far between, and I think always will be. Shaming kids is disgusting...shame the PARENTS instead, tho' I think that's just as reprehensible.

There are fewer fat people in California, partly because of our craziness, which includes eating healthier, and our climate. Joggers, bicyclists, skateboarders, walkers, etc., can be seen on virtually any street (outside the really big cities). But we've got our share. It's easier in a climate where you CAN get out, but Florida kind of puts the lie to that being the only explanation. When we used to drive to Idaho to see Jim's parents, it always shocked me that the minute we crossed into Nevada and stopped to eat, the servings on the plates were GIGANTIC, and the people I saw around us in the restaurant were ALL, to a person, quite overweight. Go figure.

God gawd, Raptor and I have yet another thing in common. I'm a complete pushover for British or Ozzie accents, and I ADORE impressionists. And I can't do an accent to save my life. Eep.

Riona, I'm jealous. Okay, say envious...I can't carry a tune in a handbasket! Only fair it's your time to be fussed over, I had to go through my embarrassment when I put up the photo of me twenty years ago...at least for you it's NOW: Enjoy! It's not conceited at all for you to feel good about your bod (or your singing...wow!), it's GOOD for your self-esteem. It's people who brag out of actual lack of self-esteem to feel sad for, they're just trying to convince THEMSELVES of what they don't actually believe (my mom having been a prime example). Tell your mom she doesn't understand, because she obviously doesn't!

I was scrawny as hell as a kid, and right up to my thirties, 'cuz of my height and thyroid. When I started putting it on, I'd never dieted and found it AWFUL! Been somewhat overweight ever since, except for a few months ago, when I felt too sick to eat for a few days--lost, believe it or not, THIRTY POUNDS in a couple of weeks! I was tickled pink, but I've put it back on in subsequent months. I don't give a damn--my height lets me carry extra pounds without it looking disgusting and I'm not trying to impress anyone anymore. Choey keeps dieting, then gives it up, then diets, then gives it up...just watching her makes me shake my head. I'll never let myself get like some I see, but yeah, at my age, quite happy to please the taste buds and to hell with the rest of the world.

But shaming people into getting thin? Or surgery to remove fat? Stupid as hell; won't work, and only does harm of one kind or another.
