Anybody else here an avid reader or watcher of medical studies, research reports, med shows?

I read a lot of 'em. I've stopped just short of watching the surgeries on you tube, but that's prolly next. Just wondered if anybody here speaks my language??

I read a lot of original medical papers, the technical kind. JAMA, BMJ, Lancet.... Is that what you mean?

I don't do the popular stuff. Definitely nothing on TV.

I just can't help but think GATTACA! (don't know if you've seen that but it was a fascinating movie...)

Also, I can't help but see a massive discrepancy in treatments and methods of diagnosis discovered of late and information that doctors actually have. I asked my doctor about a test I'd like to have and he said he'd never heard of it, even though it is a much more accurate test than the one they currently use. Is it simply that changes in the system are expensive to implement, or do we actually LIKE staying in the medical dark ages???

They're lazy and loyal to tradition. And changes are expensive as well.

I love medical shows. I used to watch the Discovery Health channel all the time, Mystery Diagnosis, Untold Stories of the ER and their specials being my favorite programs to watch but then Oprah went and bought the channel and now it is no more. I'm still pissed off at Oprah, occasionally she has good things on her channel but not as often as the Health channel did, screw you Oprah.

As for medical dramas I don't like them as much, now and again I watch House when the summary looks good, I like learning about weird diseases, but mystery diagnosis is better.

Oh, and Wish you don't want to call something you're passionate about an "obsession". Society totally uses that word wrong. Obsession comes from the Greek root word meaning punishment, an obsession is something awful that you don't want to think on but which won't leave you alone. It is an incredibly painful thing and I'm going to teach society that they are wrong to use the word casually about things they love.

You might wanna talk to my hubby... He'd say "punishment" is completely fitting, lol...

Hey, hon, come here and look at this picture of this nasty thing that's hanging out of this dude!

I don't have a problem with obsession related to punishment, in a way either fixation or obsession it IS self-flagelation.
Like a train wreck you prolly SHOULD turn away from, but don't....it messes with you. It could turn out good, or bad, depending...

I'm guessing you or somebody you know has OCD?
