DREAMTROVE

I just can't believe that no one's posted this yet. I heard about it in the hospital while Jenny was in the MRI.

I haven't seen a good list of the worst of it, but they ran some off on the news, you know, rapists, serial killers, just good salt of the earth folk. I'm not sure it's as bad as the media is making it out to be, but it's a political "Why?" moment. Unless the purpose was to ensure that his successor would be a democrat.

America loves a winner!

The lack of a coherent explanation by the outgoing Gov. only adds to the bewilderment.

If this were some story taken out of context, or there were parts of the story not being revealed by the media, and it's being sensationalized, that's one thing. But so far, ... this really looks hinky.

Even Bush, good Christian that he is, didn't mess around w/ cold blooded killers, putting them to DEATH. Releasing them... that don't make no sense.

I get the irony of what you're saying. I'll have to think about it.

Hee, hee, hee...good one, DT.

Yeah, I think everyone's heard about it...maybe things have gotten so bad, we all just shake our heads and go on. For all the petty partisan feuding, this is REAL, I don't care which party he's in, but it seems nobody finds it worth discussing. I'd like to know WHY, myself. It seems like a "fuck you" to virtually everyone, from law enforcement to victims to, well, everyone. Why would someone DO something like that???

It's certainly sickening.
Quote:

After issuing just eight pardons in his first seven years, Barbour pardoned 208 convicts, 41 of them murderers, sex offenders or child molesters, during his last 48 hours in office. Barbour notes that 90% of the people he pardoned weren’t in prison, but four murderers have been released. And by expunging their records, they can now legally buy guns, just as the sex offenders he pardoned no longer need to give their names to the sex offender registry.
So they can buy guns and nobody can know they were sex offenders. My god!
Quote:

This isn’t the first time opponents have been outraged by Barbour’s pardons. He gave four of his eight prior pardons to convicted murderers, all of whom were participants in the “trusty” program, which employs convicts at the governor’s mansion.
....
Clearly, the trusty program has left a mark on Barbour: four of the murderers freed in recent days were also trusties. One, David Gatlin, who shot and killed his wife while she held their two-month-old child, was denied parole twice in 2010.

I guess maybe he got to know them and thought they were "good guys" or something? BTW, I never thought of Time as ignorant, but the entire article refers to "trusty" program and "trusties", neither of which is accurate. ??
Quote:

After Barbour said 13 of those pardoned were saddling the state with heavy medical bills, local news outlets picked apart his claim, reporting that the cost to taxpayers was “negligible.” Barbour also said he chose to grant clemency to some convicts rather than commuting their sentences “to allow them to find gainful employment or acquire professional licenses as well as hunt and vote.” As noted at the top of Jackson’s 6 p.m. ABC News broadcast on Thursday, that decision also restored violent criminals’ access to guns. http://swampland.time.com/2012/01/13/haley-barbours-pardons-why-no-one

he goes happily back to being a lobbyist, murderers are free and can buy guns, and sex offenders have no record. Bastard. What a world!

I'd just love to know the intentions behind this--which we probably never will. Surely he's not that stupid? He had to have done it for a reason, but I for one can't fathom WHAT.

Only just heard about the story a few minutes ago myself - and yeah... pretty bad.

I knew that the president could pardon anyone s/he wants. I guess I sort of knew that governors can do it, but I'd forgotten about the governors. If I were a badguy I'd try and make friends with the governor. I could see pardoning someone who was convicted with little evidence, a controversial conviction, but it doesn't sound like that's what this is.
