Except when claims the N word is shouted at a group of Congressmen , even though a sea of people w/ video cams and cell phones recording the event can't for the life of them come up with a single shred of proof for it. Not even for $ 10,000.

THEN it's o.k. to believe, right ?

Hypocrites.

If you look back through your memory or- better yet- go through the thread yourself- you'll find that's one bandwagon I never hopped on. I try not to believe anyone. Even if people don't lie, they are often mistaken; if nothing else they are biased by unconscious selection of observations and associations. When assessing any statement, you need to take probable bias into account. If you're REALLY good, you can even suss out your own.

Can I make my point again? Rappy, you have fought me tooth and nail over things of public record- like whether UN R1441 gave the USA authority to invade Iraq because it referenced earlier UN Resolution, whether UN resolutions supersede each other (they do), all the way down to the meaning of the word "supersede"... all because some nitwit on the radio said something one day that you swallowed hook, line, and sinker. You are the LAST person to be talking about gullibility. If you had just subjected some of those big whoppers to just a fraction of the scrutiny that you gave this story, you would not now be saddled with some of the more laughable beliefs you seem to be carrying around. Dude, I love ya like a pain in the ass brother, but sometimes you're a knucklehead. AS ARE WE ALL.

It's one thing to be mistaken; it's another thing entirely to refuse to learn. The first step in learning is to realize that you either don't know something, or that you're wrong about something. As someone who has been wrong countless times, I know it's a humbling experience.

Wait a minute Signe, so are you saying that the letter you got back wasn't a real letter, it was a letter that you made up to trick Raptor? How can I trust you if you quote made up letters about stuff? (perplexed)
You can't, and (in fact) you shouldn't. Everything that everyone says should go under the microscope. Bang what they say against your own observations and experience. At some point, you may find that a person is generally reliable on some topics, in other words, what they say corresponds to actual events and has predictive capability.

Yeah but we're friends here and if you make crap up then when you want to say something real later no one will believe you. Why do I feel like I'm talking to six year olds? The boy who cried wolf anyone?
You don't have much history with me, so of course you'd be skeptical of anything I might say. It's natural. I like you, and I'm sorry abut that, but it can't be helped.

I thought of lots of snide mean things to say to you, but why waste my time with someone who can't be trusted anymore? I see that you're trying to make a specific point, I even sort of understand what you're trying to say. You're trying to say that you shouldn't believe everything you read, you should check it out first, but in your answer to me that you just posted you've opened a can of worms so that anything you say to me now may not be worth my time. Do you really even have a twin sister and a daughter? Did you just make them up for fun because you knew all us gullable sods would believe you and you thought it would prove a point somehow, how escapes any normal person's logic.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The difference between SignyM and others - is that SignyM tells you what her lies are.

I've probably done my share - not intentionally but shading things, leaving out things, momentary moods and passing PsOV, mere politeness when I just want to type out a big effyu. Those are lies. Try to not turn your back on an honest person b/c they tell you when they've lied.

BTW, the people on TV and radio - there's probably a chunk who will lie often, intentionally, easily, and with no guilt or admission. Especially when it comes to the news. The news is now just like any other entertainment segment - expected to pull in an audience to sell advertising. To be a profit center, not a source of information. To that end they follow a formula of the types of stories they cover, they way they cover them, the pacing of them, the arrangement - leading from the opening to generate interest, to the hard-tempo news to the homey closing story to leave you satisfied and content. Just like sex. Enough news to interest, nothing so intense it causes unhappiness, and worse - changing the channel, twirling the dial, clicking a different webpage. Just FYI.

Reasonable point Kiki. I just want her to think about it for a bit.

I have to admit that once, several years ago, for a period of time I lied on a website, occasionally posting to learn about something specific by making up an applicable story to justify being there. But once people started actually caring I lid on out of there because I couldn't actually trick people who cared about my pretend situation. So I did lie on the Internet, I guess most of us have once or twice. But I want to be able to trust Signe especially when she tells me important things.

I don't have you confused with anyone. I was making a comment on the wide spread view held by many on the Left, who believed some members of congress, one of them MY OWN, who had made claims which could not be supported by any evidence.

Point being, THERE, many wanted to believe it, yet there was no evidence. In other cases, where there IS evidence, folks will STILL choose to not believe, simply because it contrasts with their political leanings.

Sounds to me as if you're a big fan of Ronald Reagan. He was real big on the concept of. 'Trust, but verify'.

Works that way for some on both sides. There has been times that you have been shown evidence that you ignored because it does not suit your beliefs.

Quote:

Riona, I think there are flaws in your condemnation, among other things. For one, yes, she lied in order to make a point, and said so immediately. For another, you admit you've lied on the internet, so whatever the circumstances, I don't think you're in a position to condemn.

I have never deliberately lied about ANYTHING on the internet--I've been mistaken, I've seen things through my own point of view which may well be wrong, but never deliberately. I've been TOO honest in talking about myself, and it's given my detractors fodder to go after me. But deliberately lying is just not something I would do, just because I think it's wrong.

At the same time, I realize there are people who pretend to be someone completely different from who they are, and who lie because it's convenient for them or it backs up their point or makes them look more important than they are or many other reasons. I don't necessarily trust ANYONE on the internet, because you just never know who someone actually is or if they're telling the truth. What I do is respond on the assumption that they're telling the truth until something proves otherwise; that harms me in no way and allows communication. But to put my faith entirely in someone, especially on the internet? That's not only dangerous to yourself, it's foolish. I don't give anyone I don't know IRL that much power...sometimes not even people IRL. I think you're opening yourself up for a world of hurt if you make judgments about the personality of anyone on the net; if that's necessary for you to participate, I would warn you seriously to take care of yourself.

Beyond that, we ALL have aspects of ourselves that anyone else will dislike; it's not a black and white world, and humans aren't all good or all bad. I've even agreed with PN and Rap at times, and expressed appreciation and enjoyment of the things we have in common. I've disagreed and been angry with others whom I like very much. If you can't do that, well, it's going to be tough for you.

That sentence was pretty hefty condemnation and, in my opinion, unwarranted under the circumstances. Turning on someone you might otherwise like because they disappointed, and trusting anyone completely on the internet, is very dangerous--for YOU, nothing else. Respectfully, that's something I think you should think about. I'd hate to see you hurt, and people on the internet can be very hurtful.

That's pretty good advice. And not just for the internet. I've been burned by trusting people a number of times myself.

But, from what I understand, that was less so much an accusation, and more, perhaps, pointing out that this method of talking to AURaptor isn't really successful, and undermines itself. Her question about Sig's kids was hypothetical.

My definition of "trust" is possibly different than other people's. It doesn't involve spilling my guts or giving out info about myself when I "trust" them enough. I just like being friends with people and Signe's answer to me was cryptic and sideways and full of attitude, so I wanted to suss out whether it was worth my time to care about her situation. I care about people easily usually, unless they are obscenely annoying or obnoxious, and even then some people grow on me. Obviously I don't believe everything I read online, but this site is kind of about relationship, we all talk to each other every day and her attitude gave me pause. Although she is rather snotty in attitude other times so I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised.

I guess I've gotten so used to everyone bickering that I don't really see the specifics of the insults or behaviour that's going back and forth. I'm not really keeping track of who said what and who might've been worse this time or that. I always put down any behaviour I see that's outside the bell curve to frustration or anger, and don't really see that as representative of the person.

There was a while there when AURaptor wasn't rising to the digs and wasn't provoking anyone, and everyone was getting along for a while. Maybe that'll come back.

Hey RIONA, I didn't mean to sound snotty and full of attitude. But it would be a little meaningless for me to say "trust me" at this point, wouldn't it?

FWIW, yes, I do have a twin (identical) and yes I do have a daughter. If she seems young to you bc of the way I talk about her, it's because she suffered a grade IV brain bleed at birth and so she has rather extensive brain damage. When people ask me how old she is, I say it's best to think of her as a high-functioning autistic 13-year old, altho she is 23. But she's a sweet girl in her own way... very stubborn and sometimes oppositional and paranoid but also struggling with life... she just keeps moving forward. There really is a sweetness about her that we see, and we love her dearly.

I know that about her Signe and I didn't want her to not be real, because I know she is a good sweet person the way you talk about her. I wasn't trying to insinuate that she sounded young, I was aware that she is touched, I just didn't know how old she was so I picked a safe general age in my head. I'm sorry that I misunderstood you in this thread and I know you were just trying to tell Raptor that it is important to check stuff out before swallowing it hook line and sinker. Now I know that was all you were doing.
