Barry and the left are going to make sure the future is dull. Kennedy saw us on the Moon within the decade, Barry sees.....just what the hell does Barry see? What ever it is I'm sure it's bland. We don't do BIG things anymore.

America loves a winner!

Don't bother Barry. He's busy fundamentally transforming this country.

He's got a great vision of the future.

Is this a legitimate function of government?

Aren't any number of corporations free to go to Mars? Why isn't private industry leading the way on this?

Some presidents have pushed commercial space systems.

"On October 30, 1984, United States President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Commercial Space Launch Act.[6] This enabled an American industry of private operators of expendable launch systems. Prior to the signing of this law, all commercial satellite launches in the United States were restricted by Federal regulation to NASA's Space Shuttle.

On November 5, 1990, United States President George H. W. Bush signed into law the Launch Services Purchase Act.[7] The Act, in a complete reversal of the earlier Space Shuttle monopoly, ordered NASA to purchase launch services for its primary payloads from commercial providers whenever such services are required in the course of its activities."

Hello,

These were positive steps. No government should have a monopoly on the heavens.

Yanno, if Obama were to decide on Mars mission, the same cretins who are criticizing his lack of vision would be criticizing his reliance on "big Government". Because it really doesn't matter what Obama does or doesn't do they will find fault with his policies no matter what simply because he is a black Democrat. And in twisting themselves into knots, advocating today what they would decry tomorrow, they miss many legitimate criticisms.

This belongs in the trash can with "Obama is a Kenyan Muslim". It is about as vacuous as the space between here and Mars, and not worth paying much attention to. IMHO it is a sign of desperation because there is a real possibility Obama may just get re-elected.

Call me when anyone interesting shows up.

Yes indeed - but there's still not much effort going on by private companies trying to get to Mars, the Moon, or the stars. There's a tiny "space tourism" industry springing up, but even that isn't really going anywhere, so to speak.

I'm still curious as to how our "small government" so-called conservatives figure this is in any way a legitimate government pursuit. I love space exploration and the idea of space travel, but then I've been accused of thinking the government should do everything, so I might be biased in my thinking when I say that the government - specifically, the U.S. government - has led the way in exploring our nearest neighbors. I'm really not seeing many for-profit companies stepping up to do the heavy lifting, unless they are heavily subsidized by the government in the way of gifts, grants, and contracts.

I guess what I'm hoping to hear is for the conservatives here to make the case for WHY the federal government (or ANY government) should be pouring money into space exploration.

F.Y.I. Us cretins would say he's trying be like Kennedy in this election year. (get to know us better) When we throw his skinny ass out of office this year he and his lobster loving wife will live on the public dole, money that could be used for a Mars mission, or buying food for poor liberal pro-choice, pro-gay marrage union members who oppose the Keystone pipe line.

Takes a long time to ramp up stuff like that, as witness the government's space program. Also, they weren't even allowed to play outside the government's playpen until 30 years ago, and not really encouraged until 20.

It took over 30 years to go from the Wright brothers to reliable trans-Atlantic commercial travel, and that's orders of magnitude easier and cheaper than a trip to Mars.

Not to say there's not folks out there planning private Moon and Mars flights, but it's gonna be a while.

How long did it take from first person to hit space to the first person to orbit the Earth? And how long from that first person in orbit to the first steps on the Moon? Those are the measuring sticks we should be competing with. I know we've put people into space with privately-funded, privately-built ships (the X Prize winner in 2004 comes to mind), but have any of these private companies yet orbited the Earth with a person aboard?

Personally, I think the government SHOULD be in the space business, but I'm what many here would call a big-government liberal. I'd really like to hear the libertarian or conservative argument for government-funded space exploration.

Wait a minute - is Michelle "lobster-loving", or is she "vegan"? Because it seems to me she can't be both.

Also, are you saying that former presidents SHOULDN'T "live on the public dole"? No pension, no benefits, no security, no nothing? Or do you just advocate that for the Democrats or the black ones?

Amen. But you forgot "And in twisting themselves into knots, DECRYING today what they AVOCATED YESTERDAY, they miss many legitimate criticisms."

No doubt they're fully behind Newt's "by my second term, we'll have a colony on the moon, and when they have (however many) people, they can petition for statehood". That is of course MUCH more realistic, and worth paying for, right?
